THE WHITE LOTUS - s2 MONDAY 9pm sky Atlantic. TV PACE. NO SPOILERS

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/10/2022 10:06

So lotus is back

s1 was good. About holiday makers in a posh hotel and one died but various other things

quite funny

worth watching s1

there is a thread. Not by me s one

s2 is new cast and a new secret apart from jennifer Coolidge who returns as Tanya along with her lover now hubby

This season, Coolidge's hysterical and hyper-sensitive Tanya McQuoid will be joined by Jon Gries, who reprises his season one role of Tanya's lover turned new husband Greg, and Haley Lu Richardson (The Edge of Seventeen) who plays Portia, her assistant. Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), and Adam DiMarco (The Order) portray Bert, Dominic, and Albie, respectively, three generations of men from the Di Grasso family with three very different approaches to the opposite sex on a trip to Sicily to visit their ancestral home.

Also checking in are two polar opposite couples on vacation together: the prickly, newly-rich, and socially aware Harper and Ethan, played by Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) and Will Sharpe (Landscapers), and the carefree, news-averse, lovey-dovey couple Cameron and Daphne, played by Theo James (The Time Traveler's Wife) and Meghann Fahy (The Bold Type). The separate groups are intertwined when two local girls Mia (Beatrice Granno) and Lucia (Simona Tabasco) find their way into the White Lotus, much to the chagrin of Valentina (Sabrina Impaciatorre), the often flustered manager of the hotel.

Lol @Blondeshavemorefun apparently Leo Woodhall watched tons of Joey Essex Videos to get the accent spot on. I can confirm that the drunk train that leaves Stratford each Saturday/Sunday after the WHU match is full of blokes ‘what talk like that’ 😂

Weefreetiffany · 13/12/2022 20:44

It was nice that all of the “working class people” (Portia, Mia, Lucia, Valentina, Rocco and his fiancé) got out of the story with positive endings, unlike the first season where the rich walked away with all the ticks on the balance sheet.

refreshing that Portia didn’t get murdered and the priorities didn’t get a comeuppance like in the usual murder tropes.

Bouledeneige · 13/12/2022 21:47

I don't understand the point about Greg turning from gay to bisexual.

We have no way of knowing if Greg was targeting Tanya in Series 1 but he could have been. Just because they had sex and he married her doesn't mean anything, he could still have been gay. Plenty of gay men manage to be married and even have children (not just Philip Schofield).

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/12/2022 21:52

As in if he was with Quentin and who he was speaking to on the phone was the plan in s1 to seduce her and marry her

quention didn’t seem very jealous that Greg was shagging /married her

ALSO

  1. Portia’s top at breakfast was The Godfather
  2. Tanya is wearing the same dress as the mannequin in the car on the set of Godfather (that blows up)
  3. Portia is wearing a butterfly (madam butterfly = suicide heroine)

Jennifer Coolidge has signed for Season 3, so she is fine.

@fantasialand
where did you see that, out of interest?! 😂

ganachee · 14/12/2022 04:21

and the other women using their agency and sexual agency to, as Daphne says, not be victims of life.

I think it may be left open to the viewer as to whether Daphne’s way of feeling she is not a victim is really true. Her and Cameron seem locked in a dysfunctional relationship. Also although Ethan and Harper seem to have their relationship back, have they really. At what cost now they have both probably cheated?

ganachee · 14/12/2022 04:33

Portia's luggage bugged me too. Who just goes to the airport without their stuff? I'd have called an Uber back to the hotel, packed up my stuff and then gone straight to the airport. But it's TV, they do annoying, nonsensical things there!

Wasn’t she just following Jack’s advice to not go back to the hotel and head straight to the airport?

Did anyone think that Jack was not only meant to keep Portia away but kill her too? So he had a change of heart by letting her go? Thankfully we know he would not risk being a punished as Quentin had died

I just found Tanya’s character annoying, selfish, helpless etc so I didn’t mind she died. I also thouight the way she died was so appropriate for her, she had always been a klutz making bad decisions. Hitting herself on the head whilst trying to jump on a boat when she could have used the ladder and after successfully not getting killed by Quentin and his mafia hire seemed v Tanya.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 14/12/2022 06:44

Greg was dying in season 1, that would have to be a very long, long con if that was fake too! I'm not sure he could have got it past her doctors tbh.
We do not have any actual proof anyone was going to kill Tanya, do you think they left it that way on purpose?

Roundlampshade · 14/12/2022 07:01

The gun, duct tape and rope were a bit of a giveaway as I don’t know about you but those sort of things are items I never keep in my overnight bag.

And Tanya said to Greg that her doctors had cured him, ie he’d gone for a check up and they’d found nothing wrong with him. Yes, this was definitely a long con. I want to see him get his comeuppance.

AnImaginaryCat · 14/12/2022 07:15

Did we get an idea of how long Tanya and Greg had been married? How long a con would it have been?

I should confess that I didn't remember him from series one until my husband reminded me and now can't recall if it got mentioned 😬. It's not personal to Greg , I'm vague on what happened in series 1. Bar Tanya letting down the nice massage woman and the son and the rowing boat. (Silver lining with having a poor memory is I can watch things with a mystery or a twist a second time, and be suprised all over again 😄.)

UglyModernWindows · 14/12/2022 09:13

I loved this so much! I loved season 1 too but thought it sagged a bit in the middle. Absolutely loved Armond though, he was a joy to watch 😍

I rewatched E1 last night and there was so much stuff that I had missed the first time round. Lots of very funny one liners too. When Tanya stepped off the boat, Valentina tells her she's now in their Blossom Circle and Tanya replies " I started off at Petal Level", banality of it made me lol 😆

Tanya's death totally shocked me too. I had been lulled in the false sense of security by the fake news that she has been signed for Season 3! She was bloody annoying character but I was willing her to come round and re-surface. So annoying if Gregg now gets all her billions!

What I don't understand is why Quentin & co didn't just kill her when they left the villa and got into the boat? Why serve lunch, drinks etc and drag it out through the day? Also why organise the male prostitute/mafioso to sleep with her? She was in thrall of the "rich gays" anyway and would have eaten from Quentin's hand as it was.

I loved all the cast, my favourites were Mia who was so charming and natural and Leo Woodall as Jack. I'm in SE and my gym is full of bruvs like him. I thought he was spot on with this Essex geezer persona and yet so chilling in the final episode. Fantastic acting.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/12/2022 09:20

I want to say it was a year later. Not sure why. Maybe Tanya mentioned she didn’t expect to be alone in first year of marriage ?

or that he worked a lot ?

did Portia have her passport with her - most people don’t carry them when on holiday so how did she get on the plane

agree they could have easily bumped her off on the boat. Why all the nice dinner etx

or maybe the stallion she slept with was actually going to kill Quentin and co

and not Tanya

and Greg was a plot line and innocent

OP posts:
drspouse · 14/12/2022 09:24

I thought Portia was carrying hers for ID, as Americans of that post-college age have to carry their ID all the time. Or just "I'm in a foreign country, who knows what might happen".

TottersBlankly · 14/12/2022 09:37

I am a bit puzzled by the murder plan … I mean, a body found floating in the sea, bound and gagged, (what on earth was the gun for since he could easily have overcome her?) is an inconvenient thing - likely to prompt tiresome and intrusive police investigation and thereby hold up the passing on of the victim’s estate. Surely the gang needed Tanya’s death to look like a sad accident - drunk, overweight, middle aged woman unfortunately disappearing into the water while no one was looking.

And honestly, if you were the intending murderer, would you check your murder kit in full view of the intended murderee? 🙄Given the nuanced subtlety of the rest of the show the slapstick silliness of the gang plot was quite jarring. Though I guess that’s ok if it’s what the show creators wanted.

Delatron · 14/12/2022 09:38

I think we may have to assume she was carrying her passport- for ID, they fact why we’re on a trip away from the hotel etc. I would happily leave all my luggage versus getting murdererd! Hell she could even have put a phone call in to the hotel and have it couriered over - anything for a quick escape.

I wondering if they thought killing Tanya on the little boat with the male prostitute was an
easier way of disposing of the body. Just chuck her in the sea. Maybe they just wanted to wait until dark so less chance of being spotted.

Delatron · 14/12/2022 09:38

They were not why we’re FFS

Delatron · 14/12/2022 09:40

Yes I agree the gun etc was overkill. Many more subtle ways to kill her..

TottersBlankly · 14/12/2022 09:41

Yes, but if her body wasn’t found (unlikely …) then she’d be a missing person. Dunno about Italy but in England that’s a loooooong old process and no one’s getting rich from the missing one’s estate for years.

Twiglets1 · 14/12/2022 10:48

I'm not sure if the plot totally hung together, in particular the murder plot. But still, what a great series! Suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the fabulousness of it all. Cannot wait for series 3 now and may have to watch S1 again to feed my addiction.

fantasialand · 14/12/2022 17:57

Loved the final episode!!

Mike White confirmed that Tanya needed to die for the final experience of death (she said it’s the only one she hasn’t had in an ep)

Greg hopefully wouldn’t get the money - when someone wealthy dies in these circumstances there will be a massive investigation and the link to Greg will be found / Portia will help.

Greg isn’t gay / bi - Quentin says the cowboy was very straight but that he’d do anything for him - plus it’s quid pro quo

Mia and Lucia got what they wanted from the rich people.

it was confirmed the theme was sex by Mike White (first was money)

also it’s interesting how Daphne played out - she was hurt by Harper / Cameron but is a typical avoider so she ignores the problems to cope - the lifestyle is worth it. Ethan finally understood passion again by being with Daphne. Mike said that Harper Cameron only kissed and he’s unsure what happened on the island - unhelpful.

So Greg met Quentin 20yrs ago or so

spurned his advances

the. Decides to call him and plot Tanya murder

We only have Quentin's version of the relationship. Maybe they were in touch the whole time?
