Blondeshavemorefun · 14/10/2022 19:18

New 4 part drama on over 2weeks

The House Across the Street follows Claudia, a reclusive woman who becomes increasingly obsessed with the case of a missing child who lived nearby.

The official Channel 5 synopsis explains that “when a young child in her community goes missing, Claudia becomes embroiled in the case and fixated on uncovering the truth - however, her fascination quickly begins to turn to obsession, not only with what happened to Emily, but also with the Winter family at the heart of the case.”

As her obsession grows, Claudia starts a relationship with George, a teacher at the school she works in – but gets pulled deeper and deeper into a deceptively complex mystery.

Shirley Henderson plays Claudia, the reclusive nurse who starts to obsess over a missing child. Henderson is a prolific actor, she’s perhaps best known, though, for her roles in the Harry Potter film series

Craig Parkinson plays George, the teacher who starts a relationship with Claudia. Parkinson is best known for his role in Line of Duty, where he played the bent copper ‘Dot’ Cottan,

Owen and Sabine Winter, parents of missing child Emily, are played by Ian-Lloyd Anderson (Game of Thrones, Derek) and Lisa Dwyer Hogg (Silent Witness, The Irregulars).

They’re joined by Sara Powell (Doctor Who, Death in Paradise), Ronan Leahy (Batman Begins), and Luke Griffin (1893) amongst others. Myah Mason plays Emily Winter, the missing child.

One thing I’m keen to know, do you ever get to the bottom of why she so firmly planted herself with the family AND do you know why she sniffed and got so physically close to other men?! Okay I know that’s two things…

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/10/2022 00:03

I’ve finished it. I was on my phone while it was on. It was a load of old ridiculous rubbish. I snorted when she put the underpants on. I don’t think it was meant to be a comedy moment.

I think that’s coming up in the prequel. 😜

Notmenottodaynotever · 26/10/2022 06:44

She can't imagine it would be good for her own child to have his mum locked up!

TheChosenTwo · 26/10/2022 08:21

Why did there appear to be no family liaison officers to support the family and then the wife when the husband was arrested?!?! How did this strange woman just blend her way into their lives without anyone intervening?
I’ve just watched the last episode, it’s just all a bit stupid isn’t it?!

nilsmousehammer · 26/10/2022 08:24

Its like the total lack of the most basic safeguarding knowledge at school

Badly written, badly acted, total mess.

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 26/10/2022 09:11

What an utter load of tripe. Channel 5 should be embarassed.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/10/2022 09:12

Yes, I noticed the total absence of other people in the household with the missing girl, and is she actually dead by the way? Still can’t decide if her body was found or not, which is ridiculous. No forensic examination mentioned at all I don’t think? Nothing from the police side of things about how the case was progressing. And no funeral

so, there are no family members staying with them. Or actual close friends. Or anyone at all visiting. Or phoning. Only this random neighbour who didn’t even know them before.

what job did the dad do? Why were there no scenes of either of them breaking down at work?

why on Earth did the brother run after Emily if her crying pissed him off so much? Makes no sense. Also there was no sign of the brother being a sociopath or psychopath before, and none after until he tried to put the pillow over Moaning Myrtle. The boy’s had a breakdown, and just tried to kill a grown woman, and no-one else noticed he was under that kind of strain? Where were the scenes from HIS school, of the head supporting him/ other kids whispering etc, which would have made it all so much more believable.

as for the main character just lying in bed with the mum and doing all that other “invading bodily space” stuff, why didn’t the dad throw her out for being an oddball? And get some real life family or friends to stay over support his wife?

why did the staff at George’s previous school just let a random woman in and start talking to her about their ex colleague? That just wouldn’t happen like that. Also the pupil who sounded like she’d committed suicide. There is no way that girl’s death wouldn’t have been kept out of the local papers/off social media.

was the whole thing done during lockdown? It just felt so cheaply done, with not enough other characters in to make it feel properly finished.

and finally, why am I so irrationally angry at how bad it was? 😂

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/10/2022 09:16

Oh and this woman is just roaming the street ALL THE TIME. Why is there no sign of the police asking her why she just hangs around all the time? Why are there no police characters AT ALL?

rosegoldwatcher · 26/10/2022 10:59

Against my better judgement I watched the final episode this morning.

The whole series was codswallop.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 26/10/2022 11:25

And what was the point of the storyline about the other girl???? I'm really annoyed now that I wasted time watching this, when none of Claudia's behaviours were explained at all.

Zippedydoo123 · 26/10/2022 11:54

Think we wasted 4 hours of our life there!

Umanresources · 26/10/2022 12:13

I think if I’d read the book and there were so many unanswered questions I would assume that every other page had been glued together and I’d missed so much.
I wondered how Claudia had got in to visit the husband, surely there would be some sort of questions from the authorities? “Who are you?” “A neighbour.”
Did the mother work on her own in the travel agency? No colleagues to support her., just the strange woman from across the road.
The underpants thing was very weird. They must have been very tight on him for them to have fit her, even over her tights! I was very impressed at how neat the drawers were though. But no space for the ones he had on, or were in the wash 😄
Who was doing the daily chores for anyone? No washing, cleaning etc.
Why did Claudia’s ex spend so much time looking in his van? Was he actually looking at something or thinking? That creepy doll would have gone nowhere near my new born baby either.

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 26/10/2022 12:38

and finally, why am I so irrationally angry at how bad it was? 😂

😂🤣😆 So bad.

The boxer shorts scene made me laugh too.
When she was stroking them as the poor mother danced 🤮 Creepy, freaky woman.

Twonewcats · 26/10/2022 13:00

It was all a huge pile of steaming shite.

Twonewcats · 26/10/2022 13:02

And why do they finish stories like this, as if the family would just go back to normal for ever more, with at least 2 of them knowing that one child murdered their sibling? It's so ridiculous.
And the main character's son would probably be bullied/attacked for being her son etc etc etc

Jewel1968 · 26/10/2022 13:07

I don't think I have watched a worse TV series. I can watch crap, know it's crap but still get some guilty pleasure out of watching it. This series has nothing going for it. Nothing.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/10/2022 14:59

We all knew it was gonna be crap from the first episode. There is only one reason we have all watched it and that is FOMO.

It was useful for one thing. When I fast forwarded through the adverts I noticed quite a few for medical things which felt very like what you see on US TV eg a new menopause treatment which in the past you might have got from your GP, and something else, can't remember what now. It has helped to reaffirm the sinking knowledge that the NHS is going down the pan and heading rapidly to the US way of doing things.

Fanacapan · 26/10/2022 15:47

I’m just annoyed we lost Neighbours so 5 could make this sort of crap 🤣

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/10/2022 16:04

Finished

erm

i didn’t even reliese Emily actually was dead /found

I though she was still missing

did they find her body in e1 which I kinda obv didn’t watch properly

so again not the best drama

brother killed sister but mum was going to take the blame but the neighbour did instead to save the family

or coz she fancied the dad

never mind saving her own family /son

humph the usual ch 5 crap drama

now the pact on bbc1 is good

That was absolutely terrible. She creeped me out with her whispery voice and when she kept touching things for no reason and hiding all the time.

The Doctor at the beginning said to her some people miss the attention when they've recovered , perhaps that had some deep meaning and explained her behaviour . Hmm, noo, I think she was just very strange.

I watched all four episodes, no idea why , I must be a glutton for punishment !! Sometimes Ch 5 dramas are so awful they're funny , this one was just awful full stop, no redeeming features .
