Was on Friday night , bbc one and stars Daisy May Cooper ( this country , taskmasters)

Thought I'd start a spoiler thread as it's all on the I player and I know a few of us have binged it!
I did love this. It had an unusual manic start , but it grew in me and seeing the different episodes through a different lens was clever
I felt sorry for her with Alex and how easy it was for her to fall for his charms.

Yes great idea @MNHQ

Didn't know we could @MNHQ - I reported myself instead!

mowly77 · 28/09/2022 20:08

What the hell ... I think I've actually literally missed whole chunks of this when it comes to Jen?! I didn't clock any scene at all with her FB stalking Nic; with her on a Tinder date with Dan (except in a: 'previously' recap which was just a second of her throwing wine on him); with her spying through a window or anything to do with her mum & the flat. I am very genuinely very confused!

Newgirls · 28/09/2022 20:31

That was brilliant! So many layers and twists and turns. Every actor was so watchable. Laughed out loud a few times. The kid was amazing - amazing timing.

the80sweregreat · 28/09/2022 20:35

Mumsnet coat! 😂

These were all from the episode shown from Jens point of view.

mowly77 · 28/09/2022 20:40

@MichaelAndEagle 😳which episode was that?! I can only see 6 on iPlayer. Maybe I blacked out.

mowly77 · 28/09/2022 20:46

NVM. Christ. Having done a deep dive into this I see I actually haven't seen episode 4. In my defence, it's showing as 'watched' , & I have immense chemo brain.

Interestingly, it still sort of, practically entirely, made sense.

AlwaysMunching · 28/09/2022 20:54

😂 I'm not sure why but I am finding it amusing that you skipped a whole episode and have been so confused! Kudos to you for piecing bits together!

iPie · 28/09/2022 21:04

DMC fuck you! I can imagine you and your BF crackling over a bottle of wine. I really hope you're not a sock.

Funny you still managed to get the gist!

You can't! People always do but afaik there is no MN staff member with the username MNHQ!

minou123 · 29/09/2022 01:15

Loved AIBU. I agree with everything, clever, dark, funny, twisted and recognise loads of MN threads.

My favourite is the woo cleaner 😁
The scene when the boys pranked the cleaner by playing fart noises on the surround sound, the cleaner overreacting and telling Nic and Nic trying to take her complaint seriously- absolutely hilarious 😂

I tried to look up that fart machine on Amazon today Blush

Santiagopink · 29/09/2022 07:58

There was a very direct mumsnet reference too- Jen talking to the teacher says "he's just signed us up to the mum's netball team". Definitely a little Easter egg.
Although there were lots of funny references and nods to MN I felt there were a few little patronising ones too, almost like DMC was covering her back seeing as MN has a transphobic reputation- the love of the shop Lush, the wanting to watch Ru Paul's drag race and the weirdly shoehorned in statement of loving Nadia from big brother 5. DMC were you trying to correct us? Or are you terrified of being cancelled by the TRA mob.
Anyway I thought it was brilliant and fun to watch. Although I didn't believe for one second that Nic lived in that house, or even that village. She was far too chaotic and hippy for such a stylised and non child friendly house. Also did she have a job?

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 29/09/2022 07:59

The woo cleaner was AMAZING

"Well he used to be a Roman but now he's just an ARSEHOLE"

I could NOT with the fart machine bit. "How would you feel if it happened to you?!" and DMC's face

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 29/09/2022 08:12

I could see her in that house. I wouldn't say she was hippy. She had her own quite modern sense of style in what she wore, and she wasn't a 'live laugh love my child is my whole identity' kind of mum so I can see her holding her own in her decor in that kind of way. They had the canvas prints of Ollie and their wedding photos up. And it was obviously her project whilst the DH was working from the scene when Alex and Suzie came round. She sourced the furniture and it's a strong cohesive look whether it's your taste or not. It felt like she was someone with talent/potential but too much time and too little confidence and support network who understood her.
Where her DH took over his Dad's business and Nic had only lived there 5 years and had no friends you feel the move/place/set up etc was maybe decided by that and not her. Maybe the kind of jobs she trained for aren't around in the country and she doesn't need the money bad enough to make a big effort and there's Ollie to look after anyway.

Like I said, I'm ridiculously invested!

Ah! These things all jarred for me and I couldn't put my finger on why at the time but that actually makes a lot of sense.

Maybe she's just not transphobic. Confused Not everyone is.

"Maybe she's just not transphobic. Not everyone is."

Agree, didn't think it was at all jarring, but can see that she would want to drop one or two things to make sure her inclusion was clear.

In fact thought it was a very inclusive programme in general, quite effortlessly. Was quite refreshing to see a really diverse cast especially in terms of disability without any of it being too much dwelled upon or relevant to the story, I felt it was really brilliantly done inclusion.

CreateOne · 29/09/2022 08:18

Neither am I! But as a mumsnet user I felt a bit 'lectured' and that these clunky references jarred with all the other mn references that were so cleverly woven in to the story.
I also don't think mn is transphobic, but there is definitely a reputation of such

DontSuitAJumpsuit · 29/09/2022 08:53

Well no I presume she's not... not many people are.

Are we supposed to all clumsily shoehorn references to things into our lives now as a batsignal that we're not a transphobe?

I didn't pick up on this possible element of it until a PP mentioned it. They were all just references I thought were a bit weird at the time and presumed they were in some way a development of the story or character and I just wasn't quite getting it. I hadn't picked up on the 'mums netball' thing so I'm not the most perceptive! But it's an interesting theory.

I didn't even notice any of that but then I'm not concerned about those things. Not every body is.

CosmopolitanPlease · 29/09/2022 09:07

Yeah I picked up on the trans references too and felt they jarred, a bit virtue signal-y. And I'm GC but loved Nadia, although never seen Drag Race and hate the smell of Lush, so it was a bit pointless anyway.

GottaGetOutofDairy · 29/09/2022 09:24

With the cat, I think he'd killed it recently as he only just got the camera. I'm not sure I really got the relevance of the dead cat, or what was the sons frame of mind.

I think it was about how much seeing his Mum and Alex upset him but he/no one could really acknowledge that. He 'blamed' the cat because the cat was first out of the closet. From Ollie's pov the cat comes out, his Mum comes out then Alex does.

When he puts him in the tumble he says something like how much trouble he (the cat) has caused and he has to be punished.

"Well he used to be a Roman but now he's just an ARSEHOLE"

I laughed so hard at that line Grin
