Was on Friday night , bbc one and stars Daisy May Cooper ( this country , taskmasters)

Thought I'd start a spoiler thread as it's all on the I player and I know a few of us have binged it!
I did love this. It had an unusual manic start , but it grew in me and seeing the different episodes through a different lens was clever
I felt sorry for her with Alex and how easy it was for her to fall for his charms.

It's worth listening to the podcast as DMC talks about a thread where the poster used MN as her support to take her out of a long term abusive situation. The strength of the women supporting the poster inspired and moved DMC. I'm sure we've all read threads that have moved us and stayed in our heads for a while, a bit like the Tv series.

Thanks, I will look for the podcast.

LilyPAnderson · 03/10/2022 20:27

Can you post links to the podcast on here, or is it best to google it?

hockeygrass · 03/10/2022 22:16

@LilyPAnderson , if you install the bbc sounds app you can search on Friends will be friends with cat and Edith.

Your posts made me laugh.

I once become so obsessed about a poster who was being kept in her flat by her partner who was terrified of covid that I wanted to rescue her but afterward I wondered if it was all made up and just fiction.

Teenyliving · 03/10/2022 22:33

OH MY GOD IVE JUST BINGED IT

BRILLIANT!!!!

Teenyliving · 04/10/2022 00:06

I’m interested to know more about her early relationship with her husband. Ie she was clearly vulnerable to being love bombed by Alex at her wedding - so was her husband not telling her he loved her? The dysfunction of their relationship was clear - but I didn’t really get why they were together in the first place…

Jibbajabba1 · 04/10/2022 00:08

To me her husband seemed besotted with her at the wedding? Whilst she was clearly distracted by his brother

LolaVictrola · 04/10/2022 00:15

Nah, those are just things DMC likes herself. There’s a lot of her own personal stuff in it, like the story about Dan tricking Alex into thinking it was his birthday as a kid is something Daisy did to her brother. The cleaner is based on her cleaner, who is a medium and says her mum has a Roman centurion in the back garden. I’ve read her autobiography and a lot of the stuff in it is referenced.

Thank you, I will listen to the podcast tomorrow while decorating the house.
I watched the first episode again, and noticed in the wedding video the young couple kissing at the train station in the last episode are a cousin at the wedding and a waitress, so that confused things a bit. Suppose they still could have been a real couple at the station?
Did anybody else wonder of all things she could have worn on her head for her wedding, she wore that strange headband? I didn't think it was very flattering.
On a separate subject, I read Daisy's brother Charlie Cooper was a model, so I looked up his model agency photos and he looked gorgeous. While I thought he looked like a dork in This Country. Goes to show the difference the right camera angles and lighting can do.

JustJustWhy · 04/10/2022 05:51

I rarely "laugh out loud" but when I do it's usually over something that just hits me out of nowhere - and I thank DMC for providing me with one of these rare moments in "This Country"...when Kerry couldn't find her crumpet holes. I literally laughed for 5 minutes without stopping and I struggled to breathe!

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 04/10/2022 07:23

@LilyPAnderson

Nic is just imagining the couple in her wedding video, they turn into different people a moment later

BigSandyBalls2015 · 04/10/2022 10:34

Thanks for the heads up on the podcast, they are both brilliant aren't they. Such an intense friendship!

I have her autobiography but just haven't had time to read it.

As is typical in my family, my sister read it, gave it to me for Xmas and told me it's brilliant and not to eat when reading it 🤷‍♀️😆

I heard that the biography was pretty crap

Newgirls · 04/10/2022 12:44

The dmc biography is great! Funny and a real insight into being an actor - it sounds tough and she has to make her own work. Selin her mate too.

DatingIsDifficult · 04/10/2022 14:22

I just realised Selin Hadzi is the cousin, Debbie, in Mum.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/10/2022 10:09

I have watched again and think I've got the timeline in the right order now:

Jen leaves wherever she was living after the supermarket/Becca problems.

She gets the train but hasn't got a ticket so gets off at a random stop because the ticket inspector is coming (or did she intend going there for some reason and just hide in the toilet when the inspector came along - not sure).

The first thing she does is take Harry to the school (apparently without any prior application or meeting with the Head but hey ho) and, by chance, meets Nic at the gate.

She then sees a social worker and gets emergency housing.

Wants to find a friend so looks Nic up via school website, Facebook etc. Sees photo of Dan and does an image search and finds him on dating site.

One thing I'm not sure about is how far she has come. The supermarket manager and her mother both have Northern accents but this might not be relevant at all.

Mooserp · 05/10/2022 11:17

I don't think Jen is on a random train. My interpretation - She lost her job at the supermarket and couldn't afford wherever she was staying so was given emergency housing somewhere else. We don't see all of these arrangements being made.
She got the train to the new place (without a ticket), dropped Harry off at his new school then met the social worker at the new flat.

That makes sense.

Margot78 · 05/10/2022 15:36

I thought it was brilliant dark comedy! Just couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed that her affair wasn’t genuine. It was so refreshing to see a normal looking woman being desired. To find out she was being used and that he found her overweight took away a bit of the programme’s uniqueness. Woman scorned is a bit of an over used stereotype.

But it was the whole point that she was being used otherwise it would be a completely different story.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/10/2022 19:40

I’ve just seen this and looked for a thread

waves to @the80sweregreat

I loved it

but felt sorry for suze - assuming at the memorial she sussed out having an affair

the other 3 Nic Alex and Dan all cheating arses

and 7 years of an affair. Omg.

so was Dan bad fir going on tinder considering his wife was shagging his brother

their poor son as well. He killed their cat due to nicks lying

jen was prob the other innocent. Once she knew Dan was a cheating prick she chucked wine on him

think it was fluke Jen ended up there and only as nic was nice and gave her the gate code that she wanted to be friends with her

stalked her on fb then saw san in her pics with the notes on head game pic

I so didn’t expect the twist that she caused his death deliberately

no wonder she was having flesh backs of fucked up

hope there is a s2

Kerry's mum telling Kerry that if she wants to do a random act of kindness she can scrape the skids off her knickers before putting them in the wash basket 😂😂😂

I'm a bit confused with the Suzy character - had she twigged something was going on? They were all quite friendly on the night of the dinner. Or was she implying she knew about Alex & Nic after Alex had died?

Suzy explicitly says, to Nic, “why were you there?”, as in, why were you and my husband taking a train together. She’s suspicious because surely there was no good reason for him to have been with Nic on the day of the accident.
