9pm, get the kettle on!

OP posts:
meateatingveggie · 15/09/2022 22:01

I'm a little underwhelmed... and I've loved both previous series 😢

Clawdy · 15/09/2022 23:16

Yes, I enjoyed it but agree it was a bit underwhelming. That wedding with so few guests!

SaguaroBlossom · 16/09/2022 17:32

Yes, very disappointed, so unoriginal, - losing the ring, being late, etc. l’m sure the next episodes will be much better.

purpleme12 · 16/09/2022 23:07

I loved it!
It was really funny.
And the German shepherd was absolutely beautiful ❤️

EasyLifer · 17/09/2022 15:26

I was a bit surprised at the lack of wedding guests but still loved it on the whole.
I wonder if Spring wedding = Christmas episode baby, or would that be too obvious?!

LIZS · 17/09/2022 15:31

Repeat at 5pm today. I don't think taking time off for weddings was an accepted thing unless they were your employer. Hence why Helen's previous wedding was scheduled for Christmas Day.

Violinist64 · 17/09/2022 16:12

I enjoy it but l don’t think it is a patch on the original BBC series, which stuck to the books much more faithfully. It is also very much promoting 21st century ideas into the 1930s.

The one where the young Scot was played but a middle aged English man?

I think this James is wonderful, and the author's family are much happier with it.

Clawdy · 17/09/2022 19:13

Yes, I much prefer this James - and Helen. But worst version ever was the film made years ago starring Simon Ward, where Helen and James were impossibly posh.

AlternativelyWired · 18/09/2022 11:51

I loved it! It made me cry but I'm a sentimental fool and have pmt.

Georgeskitchen · 18/09/2022 11:53

Watching tonight looking forward to it

Babdoc · 18/09/2022 11:59

I’m with Violinist64. I grew up with the original series, and for me Robert Hardy will always be the quintessential Siegfried Farnon. It was compulsory viewing in my house.
I never like remakes, they always disappoint, never stand comparison with the original, and one wonders why they bother. There must be lots of new ideas they could develop, instead of rehashing and spoiling old ones.

Surtsey · 18/09/2022 12:21

I read all the books and watched the original series. Although James, Siegfried and Tristan's characters in that tv series weren't portrayed as they were in the books, I simply cannot get that series, and particularly the theme tune, out of my head.

I've tried watching the new one, but to me, they don't ring true to the books either. Maybe just too 'modern' an interpretation, as another pp says.

Robin233 · 18/09/2022 18:38

I love this adaptation.
Was a bit sceptical at first though.
The doggy was fab.

Maireas · 18/09/2022 19:49

I loved it! I thought it was very funny and charming and beautifully played.
It's the best version.
As pp have said - James is a young Scotsman and Helen a Yorkshire woman. The family say it's the best portrayal. The series and the two films really annoyed me.
The books all show James to be neat and particular and quite earnest, and that's how he's played here.

Wasn't it dreadful! Helen was a pearl wearing snob who looked as if she'd never seen a farm!

Ginger1982 · 18/09/2022 21:12

I also thought the lack of guests was weird!

I am totally in love with Sam West though! I really want Siegfried and Mrs Hall to get together.

There's certainly something isn't there. However it would be a massive deviation from the original. I like that Mrs Hall's character is being made something of, but there are times I think it's too much. I have read all the books and I don't recall anything in them about a relationship between Siegfried and her

Ginger1982 · 18/09/2022 21:19

@meateatingveggie I can see why people think that. I don't really remember the original so I don't compare the series or the books.

Clawdy · 18/09/2022 22:19

In the books, Mrs Hall is an elderly lady who would never in a million years have got together with Siegfried! 😃

whatsthestory123 · 18/09/2022 23:05

loved it all
real Autumn watching

Magicpaintbrush · 19/09/2022 09:09

Tricky-Woo was a guest at the wedding and for me that is enough to give episode 1 of this new series a thumbs up!😁

Samcro · 19/09/2022 09:13

in the original series. did the Helen actor change?

Maireas · 19/09/2022 09:14

Yes. Carol Drinkwater had a mixed experience on the show, shall we say.
She always said that the writers didn't seem to know how to include her character.

Ginger1982 · 23/09/2022 13:15

Enjoyed last night's episode.
