Love most of this series - Siegfried and Mrs Hall out-act everyone, but that’s to be expected given their longer acting careers. I’d love to see them get together, but it wouldn’t be true to the times. I’m really struggling to like Helen - I know she’s supposed to be a no nonsense Yorkshire lass from t’farm, but imo she comes across as a bit of snob who wouldn’t know one end of a cow from another. I’ve warmed to Tristan and like his new love interest. Definitely comfort TV, just what’s needed at this time of year.

James changed lots of detail from real life. My point is that the Helen from the books was a farm lass.

Exactly, and his portrayal was of a very practical and down to earth person.

Alf Wright admitted his books were as much novels as autobiography. So I don't have problem of tinkering with the characters and using the various incidents Wright wrote about to weave a these current tales.

That's true. Alf's animal stories were all based on his experiences, but he always said that he changed the human stories.
His family like the current series and this incarnation of James. It was very much done with their support.

They were going to see a recital or something and she was worried he would think it was a 'date' which he obviously did, hence the flowers, so when he realised how she felt, he ditched the flowers.

I agree it wouldn't be true to the times but I really want them to get together. But it looks like, if that is where they're heading, it's going to be a slow process!

I agree - but hopefully it would mean we’d get another couple of seasons! I really can’t see Mrs Hall with whatshisname, the dog walker - there’s no chemistry there.

I’m loving this. I grew up watching the original series but much prefer this.
It’s funny because I watched the original with my mum and she really loved it. She has gone now but I have since done our family tree and her (and mine) ancestors were cow farmers from the very same village a lot of this series was filmed.
She never knew but she would have been thrilled.

So do I. I’m irrationally annoyed by Mrs Hall having been made young and attractive and I really hope she and Siegfried don’t end up together!

I know Mrs Hall is "wrong" compared to the books but she looked beautiful in that lovely blue dress and hat. Florence's red dress was gorgeous too, I love 1930s and 40s fashions.

Am enjoying it, not sure Mrs Hall should be quite so prominent though, as in the books she was quite different. I liked the original series too despite Robert Hardy, who I always found very hammy.

@diddl she doesn't want to 'date' Gerald because she's secretly in love with Siegfried. She does NOT like Diana! 😂

It wouldn't be half as fun without Mrs Hall. She's brilliant and knows the men so well and is the glue that keeps it all together.

I too hate the breakfast not eating.

I always wonder what happens if they have to shoot an 'eating' scene multiple times. Do they have to reset all the food, eat lots of it etc?
