I always feel sorry for Mrs Hall, cooking, cleaning and looking after the house must be more than a full time job!! And yes she would not be impressed at wasted food.

I always wonder what happens if they have to shoot an 'eating' scene multiple times. Do they have to reset all the food, eat lots of it etc?

DP has worked as action or standby props - they handle all the items required when actually filming. He said food scenes can be very hard work, when every item on a table gets moved around and it all has to go back exactly where it started - or worse when they want to pick up part way through. The digital camera has been a godsend for continuity.
Experienced actors will often avoid eating or drink anything unless it is specific to the script, they learnt that lesson the hard way. He described having ten nicely cooked steaks ready for a food scene but in the end the actors just waved around bits of it on the ends of their forks and so several steaks ended up back at his and going into a giant beef casserole.

I can't see Siegfried and Mrs Hall together. I think they work as they are now

Clawdy · 09/10/2022 08:16

In the books Mrs Hall is an elderly lady. I imagine the writers of this series felt they needed more than one main female character, so gave her a bigger role. I really don't see her and Siegfried together, though, hope it's not heading that way.

Ginger1982 · 09/10/2022 09:11

@Laughingravy thank you, that's interesting! I'll be looking more closely now!

Ginger1982 · 09/10/2022 09:24

At least if they don't put Audrey and Siegfried together, we have FanFiction to fall back on 😂

I think it was a good secure job for a woman in those days. Didn't she say that she felt safe at Skeldale House? I think her back story is quite sad.

Maireas · 09/10/2022 18:07

Florence and Tristan are cute.
I think Jim Moir (Vic Reeves) is excellent as Mallock!

Ginger1982 · 13/10/2022 20:19

Looking forward to tonight!

meateatingveggie · 13/10/2022 21:44

I think I might be a bit in love with Siegfried 😕

SirChenjins · 13/10/2022 21:46

I’m a huge big bit in love with Siegfried - he’s lovely 😊

meateatingveggie · 13/10/2022 21:59

This series has warmed up to be the best yet. I don't want it to end

AlternativelyWired · 13/10/2022 22:29

I might have shed a tear.

How does Mrs H get the pattern on her shortbread?

You can get cutters that also form a pattern. Somewhere like Lakeland have them

Notonthestairs · 13/10/2022 23:04

Lovely episode. Full of heart and tenderness. And an antidote to most TV.

I looked up HMS Repulse. It was sank with 500 lives lost. Sad

Ginger1982 · 13/10/2022 23:09

I am massively in love with Siegfried 😂

This was, by far, one of the best episodes, of not the best episode of all 3 series and it was the writer's debut!

AlternativelyWired · 13/10/2022 23:11

Get in line, I'm head of the queue😁

Walkingtheplank · 14/10/2022 00:18

I had a good cry as she ran after the train.
The work experience story was sweet too.
Back to it's best.

BestIsWest · 14/10/2022 07:09

Such a moving episode and great acting I thought.
As soon as he saw HMS Repulse on the hat, DH remembered it had sunk, but also thought that sailors hats didn’t have names on during war time. We couldn’t remember if the war has started at this point or if it is building up to it.

I don't think the war has started yet. I assumed that was the case as the ship name was on display on Edward's cap. A poignant moment when you know the history of that ship. I'm glad the deaf WVS lady was able to lip read. I wonder if we'll reach the outbreak of war next week?

On the lighter side, Jess stealing the biscuit from Mrs Hall's saucer creased me up. They looked as if they were trying not to burst out laughing themselves! Not sure that was in the script.

Just reying to watch on catch up (my5?) and the bloody subtitles are out of sync!

Wonderful episode- best yet.
Loved the work experience lad.

Ginger1982 · 14/10/2022 20:51

Some lovely moments at the end between Siegfried and Mrs Hall too ❤️
