We are looking for a new drama to watch. We loved the Scandi ones and also Spiral the French police show - what is similar and as good? It doesn’t have to have subtitles but for some reason we always prefer the foreign ones.

I just finished both seasons of Wisting. Really enjoyed it. There will be a season 3 according to IMDB.

Sadly I think the BBC has combined s2 and 3 in its listing.

Episodes 1-4 of what the BBC calls s2 is S2 and episodes 5-8 are S3 🙁

There's a new Borgen on Netflix, picking up ten years later.

Piggywaspushed · 28/10/2022 10:32

Have you watched it? I am on episode 3 or 4 and finding it really dull. Lack of knowledge about Greenlandic politics, think.

Yes, I'm about 6 eps in, I think (can't quite remember as have had a hiatus from it for a bit). I know what you mean about the politics, but I'm finding it difficult to follow rather than dull as such; I think there's enough human interest to keep me hooked in. And I do think it's interesting, this issue of what happens when a tiny and 'insignificant' state suddenly turns out to be very attractive to major global powers. Plus the issue of Greenlandic unemployment, poverty and history of subjugation and marginalisation pitted against environmental concerns.

Piggywaspushed · 28/10/2022 10:49

Yes, I find the issues interesting but am investing so much energy on remembering who everyone is, having lost many of the familiar faces!

I do like the chap she sends off to Greenland , though. He was also good in another Scandi offering, The Chestnut Man.

I know, I miss some of the old characters. I like seeing Phillip but he doesn't appear very often. And Birgit's old mentor, can't remember his name but he pretends to have dementia.
I haven't seen The Chestnut Man but I like that actor too. I'll look it up!

A really offbeat one is Beforeigners. Norwegian and includes time travel as well as detection. It really stayed with me - I think about it a lot.
DH and I often laugh about how the subtitles are put over the delicate pale Scandi interiors and hard to read!

@StartupRepair where did you watch Beforeigners? I heard about it ages ago but couldn't find anywhere to watch it in the uk.

StartupRepair · 28/10/2022 13:05

@NoOnKnows I'm in Australia! I saw it on tv here.

Having watched probably way too much Scandi Drama Borgen is the one thing that doesn’t grab me.

I think perhaps I just like murder and detectives with complicated back stories set against an attractive, preferably snowy backdrop- essentially an upgrade on Midsummer Murders!

Vinylloving · 28/10/2022 13:42

Le Mante on Netflix, french murder drama, I binged on a weekend alone and loved it

beonmywaythen · 28/10/2022 13:44

Seaside hotel is Danish - lighthearted and sweet. Really good

PeaceX · 28/10/2022 13:49

Where is seaside hotel?

PeaceX · 28/10/2022 13:54

I couldn’t get on with this and abandoned it a few episodes in. The first couple of series from 10+ years ago are superb, however.

I agree that the first two series of Borgen are the best. I didn’t like series 3 as much, and think it suffered a bit from Kasper not being around (he was a great character IMO).
I did watch all of the new series, but didn’t enjoy it that much. I felt they’d let Katrine down as a character in particular. I quite liked the Greenland sections, but that was more out of interest in the location really. I liked Asger.
I don’t know if they’ll do another one, but Birgitte as an EU commissioner (which they hinted at) has potential I think.

PAFMO · 29/10/2022 17:48

I'm 2 episodes into Borgen and don't know whether to continue or not.
Does it continue along the political shenanigans and back stabbing/designated survivor without the explosions, or do other things happen?
I do like a Scandi serial killer you see!

Piggywaspushed · 29/10/2022 18:55

It took me a while to get into Borgen for the same reason. But I'd say it does pick up in Series One.

colouringindoors · 29/10/2022 20:01

Just finished Sisterhood - grew on me.

The Artic Murders - v gd

Valhalla good too. Several others on ch4 Walter Presents

itv Karen Purie very good too tho not Scandi Noir

JemimaTab · 29/10/2022 20:55

I’m about halfway through Arctic Circle (Finnish, All4). It’s quite good, though a couple of things are irritating me slightly. The location/setting is fascinating though.

Genehuntsfanclub · 30/10/2022 19:07

We've just started series 3 of Deadwind on Netflix. Set in Finland with a make/female detective duo. If you enjoyed The Bridge you'll probably enjoy this. One of the best Scandi shows has to be " When the dust settles" but have watched too many to remember.

I've finished it in two sessions. It is very good. Love Sakari Nurmi and wish that Karpi would comb that mane!

NB - the actress who plays Karpi is in Arctic Circle (recommended by @JemimaTab above) with tamed hair.

KittyMcKitty · 31/10/2022 16:03

Thank you I hadn’t realised there was a third series so ended up staying up way too late to watch 2 episodes. Wish Nurmi would quit with the skinny jeans they’re not his best look!
