We are looking for a new drama to watch. We loved the Scandi ones and also Spiral the French police show - what is similar and as good? It doesn’t have to have subtitles but for some reason we always prefer the foreign ones.

The Bureau - French political thriller is excellent.

Another vote here for Giri/Haji too.

I concur with Babylon Berlin, it's superb.
Also The Truth Will Out, Norwegian I think, about a bunch of slight misfits from the police investigating cold cases.
French: The Crimson Rivers, two detectives investigating crimes that are all based in symbolism from mythology, history, occult stuff etc (astrology, ancient Greek myth etc). A bit hokey, but they travel seemingly all over France and you get some lovely scenery. They also always end up staying in some shonky guesthouse and complaining about the beds/food/staff Grin

And not crime in the same sense (not detectives, I mean), but The Outlaws (Walter Presents, I think). The current Apple TV series Bad Sisters is a remake of/based on this. The husband of one of a family of sisters dies in slightly suspicious circumstances and the drama flashes back in time to find out what was happening in the run-up. Super-black, very funny, very tense.

Also Belgian, The Twelve (Walter Presents again). About the jury in a court case. While it has procedural elements in that it does cover the case, it's also concerned with the lives of the jurors; what's already going on in their lives and how the case affects them/reflects aspects of their lives.

I started watching Sisterhood last night and it has Ilmur Kristjansdottir who played Hinrika in Trapped in it and also Halldora Geirharosdottir who starred in Woman at War (I love this film) and had a small part in S1 of Trapped.

I finished watching Entrapped last night on netflix. Not nearly as good as my memories of Trapped but I suppose I stuck it until the end.

J0y · 23/09/2022 20:04

I cannot get in to it at all!

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2022 20:14

Don't like Entrapped. Didn't like second series of Trapped either but the first series was excellent.

J0y · 24/09/2022 17:12

I see trapped is gone from netflix :-(

Helenloveslee4eva · 24/09/2022 17:18

Hinterland.
Welsh Scandi noir

NiteNight · 24/09/2022 17:28

Hinterland is great.

KittyMcKitty · 24/09/2022 18:56

I loved Hinterland

Jewel1968 · 24/09/2022 19:00

I have found my people. I really struggle with subtitles these days - problems with my eyes - so it takes me ages to get through a foreign drama. I find the scandi dramas have fewer words (usually) so easier for me.

I enjoyed the second series of Trapped up to a point. (Mild spoiler alert) Hated them killing off who they did, and always think incestual abuse as a last minute plot reveal is such a horrible hack thing to do.

DameHelena · 25/09/2022 17:32

Oh yes, Hinterland is gripping, and really beautiful to look at too.

I gave up on this after about three episodes. It had none of the genuine drama or complexity of Trapped. Different writer? Really disappointing.

If you've got Netflix, Capitani is very good. I'm still working my way through but my Mum (who is the queen of Scandi noir, Walter Presents etc) declared the best piece of TV she'd ever seen.

There's another one she's also raving about but I can't remember the name. I'll ask her.

Thank you for this suggestion - started watching last night and am being drawn in. Apparently it’s the first Luxembourg-made series to be shown on Netflix.

I’ve tried the Lorenskog Disappearance, made it to halfway through episode two and abandoned it. Far too slow and plodding. Perhaps there was something compelling about it that I totally missed as several posters here have recommended it 🤷‍♀️

I watched Trom on Bbc. It's made in the Faroe Islands and is ok. (Bearing in mind that the population of the Faroe Islands is less than 50 k it's quite impressive.)

jellybe · 29/09/2022 22:17

Bit late to the thread but Hinterland is amazing! BBC/s4c program, scandi noir but Welsh. It is so so good! I think it is currently in Netflix.

I absolutely loved Trom and the scenery was stunning!!

Sisterhood - Icelandic. I’m hooked. Gave up on Capitani as it wasn’t compelling enough.

Pomtiddly · 02/10/2022 08:01

Does anyone remember the name of a series which started as if it was going to be a police procedural, with a girl being abducted from by a river at their holiday home but then gradually went weird, with people being absorbed into the forest.
Norwegian, I think.
Really absorbing.

I don't remember a series but I think I read a book with a similar theme. I'll see if I can track that down as it might have been made into a series.

Pomtiddly · 02/10/2022 18:08

Thanks @BinBandit

BinBandit · 02/10/2022 19:54

No joy I'm afraid @Pomtiddly. I have ascertained that I don't currently own it, it may have been a library book or one I passed on. I've tried Google and it came up with a number of options but none of them seemed right. I have images from the story in my head now but I'm not sure if that's simply from my imagination whilst reading the book or if it was actually something on tv after all. Confused

NightNite · 02/10/2022 20:04

Is it Jordskott?

Pomtiddly · 04/10/2022 03:04

That's the one! Thank you @NightNite

OP it's worth watching

Beck is clever and funny (iPlayer)

The Accused (iPlayer) top quality writing and actors. Each one a different case. See the person in court..and the team behind the scenes..what they did emerges then the verdict.

Dicte a danish investigative journalist, divorced and back in her home town. Amiable soap type watch most of the time
