We are looking for a new drama to watch. We loved the Scandi ones and also Spiral the French police show - what is similar and as good? It doesn’t have to have subtitles but for some reason we always prefer the foreign ones.

Redemption on Walter Presents All4 is a good Italian crime drama. Ex police’s son found dead on river bank - he tries to prove it wasn’t suicide with all sorts of twists n turns.

I also enjoyed The Investigation which was based on the real life murder of Kim Wall, a Danish journalist. It very cleverly avoided giving publicity and agency to the murderer by never showing him on screen or naming him directly. I think it was shown on the BBC.

A companion piece to this drama was released on Netflix this week just gone.

It's called Into The Deep; a documentary that chronicles Peter Madsen and a group of volunteers helping Madsen with his projects – shot as it happens before, during, and after the murder of Kim Wall. (Peter Madsen being her murderer.)

The interviews with a female volunteer, 'Sara' are fascinating...

J0y · 04/10/2022 21:42

Sara seems like your basi low self esteem 'groupie'. She idolised him. As a male volunteer said, he never finished anything. He didn't have a degree.

J0y · 04/10/2022 22:01

I want tobsee the investigation that doesn't show him or name him

This is touch about him.

Yes - I agree. But I was alluding to her realization that SHE was his intended victim. Sara was to go out in the submarine with him on the Monday following his trip with Kim Wall on Saturday night; a trip that was arranged only when Kim contacted him on Saturday afternoon.

I saw The Investigation when it was on iplayer. Would like to watch it again, having seen the documentary. It's on Amazon prime - but at a cost!

rosegoldwatcher · 10/10/2022 13:39

A new series of Wisting, set in Norway, begins on BBC4 next Saturday at 9pm.

I'm currently rewatching series 1 on i player.

workshy46 · 17/10/2022 14:58

Hide & Seek Walter Presents was good too- just finished it.

WhoDatDen · 17/10/2022 19:06

Thank you everyone, I have found my people. I am currently watching Wistling S1 on iplayer, I have 2 episodes to go and then will start S2. Really enjoying it.

Just put Hide and Seek on my watch list for afterwards!

I loved the Bridge, that's what got me started, then The Killing and Dark on Netflix. Was very confusing and I had to keep a track of who was who with that one 😂Also Trom and Trapped set in Iceland, but I cant remember where I watched Trapped, think it was Netflix but it's not there now.

rosegoldwatcher · 17/10/2022 20:21

I watched a great one today - Black Butterfly on Netflix.
It is a French production, 6 episodes. Many twists and turns.

j712adrian · 17/10/2022 20:36

for me, Borgen is unsurpassable - why, I even went to Copenhagen to find the locations - apart from that, the only TV programme I've liked better is the original Prisoner

j712adrian · 17/10/2022 20:37

Ought to say that IPlayer has the first 3 series of Borgen on, for a grand total of 29 episodes. I've watched all of them again this year.

I have only just discovered Wisting and am binging on Series 1&2 on iPlayer because they go at the end of the month.
I bloody love it. So good.
I keep telling people IRL they need to watch it.
Good to hear there's more!

I needed a notebook for Dark and keep saying I'll rewatch and see if it makes any more sense second time round. 😂
I got a bit bored of The Killing though. Maybe because I watched it straight after The Bridge and so nothing was going to match it.

StartupRepair · 17/10/2022 21:49

A really offbeat one is Beforeigners. Norwegian and includes time travel as well as detection. It really stayed with me - I think about it a lot.
DH and I often laugh about how the subtitles are put over the delicate pale Scandi interiors and hard to read!

JemimaTab · 17/10/2022 21:58

Wisting is good.
The Investigation was incredibly good IMO.
I’d also recommend Cry Wolf (Danish series on All4) - it’s not really a crime thing, if that’s what you’re after (it centres around a social services investigation), but is probably the best thing I’ve watched this year.
Snow Angels (Swedish) is also good, but quite bleak.

DameHelena · 18/10/2022 10:27

I recognise the guy from Wisting but I can't remember if I've seen it... I think that means I've watched too many Scandi things; they all blur into one a bit Grin

Cry Wolf was really good; slow and quite subtle/complex.

I agree Snow Angels was VERY bleak, even for my tastes!

DameHelena · 18/10/2022 10:31

Should also mention Nordic Murders (Walter Presents); oddly, not set in a Nordic country but in an island in the Baltic Sea, Usedom, which seems to be part-German and part-Polish (my geopolitical knowledge is extremely hazy, forgive me).
It's a crime investigation thing but with lots of family intrigue and tensions too. Also plenty of interesting, flawed, highly capable women characters, many older and with a range of looks and physiques, which I love about many Scandi/foreign dramas. And a beautiful landscape that was new to me and has made me want to visit.

Haha so did we. We stayed at a hotel without realising it was bang across from where they shoot the outside of Birgitte's apartment in S2/3.
On our first night we arrived late and just wandered into a bar.
After our trip s4 had just launched and it was the bar where she met her son after the disastrous TV1 interview (but of a shithole)
Great thread!
I've watched so many (can never remember what they're called though! ) but now have a few more to go at.

KittyMcKitty · 23/10/2022 23:30

I’ve just watched Cry Wolf on the recommendations here - it was fantastic- great pace and acting - the actor who played Lars is so good in everything I’ve seen him in.

Snow Angels I found a tough watch.

femaleflimflam · 23/10/2022 23:39

Delhi Crime on Netflix is brilliant.

Season 1 us based on a true case if the horrific Delhi bus rape a few years back, but it's very well done from the point of view of the overstretched police force and the brilliant work they did catching the criminals. It's filmed as a crime drama and not a documentary.

Season 2 is fictional but equally absorbing. It's won lots of awards in India. The language flips a bit between Hindi and English, it's easy enough to follow, acting is superb. Highly recommend it.

marmiteandminticecream · 26/10/2022 19:01

does anyone know any ghost dramas , anything supernatural with sub titles
would love to watch something scary

rosegoldwatcher · 26/10/2022 20:07

No ghosts as such but supernatural - Ragnarok (Norwegian) and Katla (Icelandic.)

GingerRuby · 26/10/2022 21:31

Thank you so much to the posters who recommended Wisting, finished Series 1 before it goes off I player and loved it, starting Series 2 now.
