The aim of the TV series is to tell us what is happening in the TV series not to say: "There are some books you can read."

And why did Daemon cut his hair? It's a wig. He can have a long wig or a short wig but if he's going to change it can he tell us why?

Well I thought ep 4 was the best one yet in that the hour whipped by! Still not at the dizzying heights of GOT but definitely filling the fantasy-shaped hole in my life. I completely agree with PPs that one reason I'm not enjoying it as much is I have no favourite character to root for.

In terms of Alicent I can't decide how much she's scheming herself and how much she is just a pawn of her father.

I think Daemon penetrated Rhaenyra and she's not going to drink the tea so the child could be his or Cristons.

And is it just me that hates the opening titles? The blood looks so fake and they're not very intricately done or interesting imo.

I think she will drink the tea! She’s very averse to getting pregnant so will probably see it as the answer to her dilemma - she can have sex and enjoy herself, have a cup of tea and literally banish the consequences!

Allicent feels a bit lukewarm, I expect we’ll see a few things change in her over the next few episodes. She won’t be Queen for much longer.

flophop · 14/09/2022 08:02

Well yea she might be averse to getting pregnant but surely the dilemma is if she drinks it then her dad will think he knows she bonked his brother.

The weird thing is if she drinks it it will be so prevent herself getting pregnant by her guard, Daemon didn’t finish during their encounter (I don’t think).

I wonder if the series will improve more when the adult actors take over the girls' roles?

BeyondsEnergyObsession · 14/09/2022 10:57

I keep writing and then deleting comments here as I keep accidentally writing spoilers from the book, so I've created a second thread where spoilers are allowed...

I think the answer to that one is pretty clear: it's to signify both in-world and on-screen that he's not a court pretty boy, but a hard-living man of action who doesn't live by convention.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 13/09/2022 20:53

Or he had a sudden attack of conscience, or a recurrence of his "performance" issues from an earlier episode. Or he only ever wanted to be seen in a compromising position with her so she'd be forced to marry him and never fancied her at all. You can never tell with Daemon.

What made me think he’s attracted to her was the way he put the necklace on her in the first episode.

Honeyroar · 14/09/2022 23:13

I’m enjoying it more each episode. I knew she’d end up with her uncle. Not quite sure why she ended up jumping the bodyguard - because there weren’t any Anne Summers shops in those days?? Was she just frustrated?

Anon778833 · 15/09/2022 01:54

Yeah, it’s because Daemon got her frustrated.

Oblomov22 · 15/09/2022 06:57

Getting bored of it now. Dh thinks it's weak. Have to agree.

FawnDrench · 15/09/2022 11:24

I just can't warm to Rhaenyra - she's a bit wooden and bland to me.
She always seems to have the same semi-sneery facial expression.
And there's been hundreds and hundreds of close-ups of her face it seems - always looking not-quite enigmatic.

Perhaps the next version of her will be more compelling on screen.
I bloody hope so.

Pemba · 15/09/2022 11:55

Daemon is her UNCLE, urgh. Obviously not as important to their society as it would be on Earth (apart from ancient royal Egyptians)...

And would a very young woman be happy to have her first sexual encounter, standing up in public really? Particularly a princess brought up with notions of honour and modesty, and regard for her own status? Seems highly unlikely to me.

Did it happen that way in the book too? Old George getting his rocks off again.

No disrespect to the actors, they were both great.

MuddlerInLaw · 15/09/2022 12:49

as it would be on Earth

I’ve been wanting to ask - is it supposed to be Earth? Obviously mythologically and societally different but are we supposed to assume they’re on this planet, in this universe? Or not?

Pemba · 15/09/2022 13:05

Well it's never really mentioned by George Martin, but it must be Not Earth, there are different continents (Westeros, Essos). And magic and dragons real.

But all loosely based on things from Earth history, legends etc, all mixed up together.

Pemba · 15/09/2022 13:15

It might be interesting if, say, explorers found a new part of their world with different animals etc. Or a spaceship arrived from Earth! Or (like in Battlestar Galactica) they progressed scientifically, developed space flight, discovered Earth and then we realised they are our distant ancestors!

But none of this will happen because 1.its not science fiction and 2. He is mainly interested in medieval style battles and political intrigue, plus lots of sex, torture and dragons! That's what the fans enjoy! I liked GoT the show, but found the books pretty much unreadable.

There are conflicting accounts on what if anything happened between Rhaenyra and Daemon in the books.
History was written by gossiping maesters studying in the Hightowers' Oldtown. They believed a woman's place waz the birthing chamber, and that Rhaenyra and Daemon were depraved and evil.

LobeliaBaggins · 15/09/2022 16:49

I was simulataneously grossed out and bored by this episode, but I can't be as bored as Rhaenyra looks ALL THE TIME. I keep comparing her to Arya Stark and Daemon to Jaime, and they are so lacking. There is just no spark of humour or mischief in this show, or even any satisfying villainy. Just Daemon wandering around dazed and confused.

Also, yes, the wigs are awful.

PuppyMonkey · 15/09/2022 17:01

I do think it’s taking a while to get going and is losing my attention. We need a heroic common person to root for I reckon, bit bored of the Targaryens.

(I bloody love the Rings of Power thing on Amazon, anybody watching? - I can’t find a thread).

WhathaveIdoneagain · 15/09/2022 17:41

Daemon is based on Prince Oberyn I think. I miss Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, though. Even if show Jamie was aimless.

BorgQueen · 15/09/2022 18:33

Pics from ep 5 look promising. I’m assuming the Rheya Royce character is an ancestor of Yon Royce of The Vale?

WhathaveIdoneagain · 15/09/2022 20:49

Thanks for drawing our attention to the photos @BorgQueen
Rhea is of the same house, but not a direct ancestor.

crackersforcrackers · 15/09/2022 22:16

Episode 4 has been my favourite so far, though still finding it a bit flat. Think I like ep 4 more as it focused on one character (or at least fewer characters) more then previous episodes meaning there's a chance to develop them.

Just do not like Matt Smith in it. In fact he's ruining it for me. Total wet fish (and about as attractive). I'd like more attractive men <shallow>
