House of the dragon - thread for those who have read Fire and Blood too

BeyondsEnergyObsession · 14/09/2022 10:56

Just thought rather than try to be careful what to say on the main thread, a second thread that can relate to the book might be useful 🙂

The thought that made me create it - do we know how many children Alicent has had at the point we are at currently (end of episode 4)? I was wondering because of the many "the king is going to die soon" comments I have seen, and feel I can't disagree with without explaining! 😁

Good idea for a thread!

AFAIR in Ep3 she’d had the long awaited son and was heavily pregnant. By Ep4 she was no longer pregnant (not sure of the gap in time) but I don’t recall seeing the second child.

8misskitty8 · 14/09/2022 12:23

Episode 4 I think was another 6-12 month time jump. It showed her with the second child.

WhathaveIdoneagain · 14/09/2022 12:50

I think Alicent must have had the baby girl. She is still due to have two sons, so she must have fallen pregnant again when they were shown having sex.
Viserys has serious plot armour. His death triggers the war of succession which should happen when all of Alicent's and Rhaenyra'three eldest are teenagers. By the time Viserys dies, Aicent has three (?) grandchildren.

I prefer the show House of the Dragon to GoT, because it follows the rather short written stories more closely.

What a good idea - place-marker.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/09/2022 19:08

Placemark

Alicent had :

Aegon
Haelena
Aemond

and Daeron

I'm rereading the book because I'd forgotten a lot of it.

Enjoying it so far, Matt Smith is excellent.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/09/2022 19:15

Matt Smith is such a huge crush of mine. Despite having high profile roles in The Crown and Who, I still don't think he's properly broken through as a Hollywood Star, this could do it for him he's brilliant in it.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 14/09/2022 19:41

Also a big Matt Smith fan, I was so excited when he was cast as Daemon. I saw him in American Psycho The Musical which was weird as hell. I also recommend Last Night in Soho, which is very good but very disturbing.

I've just reread the chunk of F&B which covers the first 4 episodes because I couldn't remember whether Rhaenyra actually did shag Criston Cole in the book, and was yelling at the screen for him to remember his vows. From the Great Council to the brothel escapade is only about twenty pages in my edition.

L'd forgotten how much there is still to happen before Visaerys dies. I'm not sure whether they'll keep him alive for as long in the show though, because Paddy Considine is so much older than book Visaerys, and they've made him up to look older still. Book V is not yet 30 when Aemma dies, and dies age 52, which screen V looks like he's already passed.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/09/2022 19:55

Yes, I will be finishing the book tonight, I felt sure Cole turned her down (and went over to Alicent)

DesMoulinsRouge · 14/09/2022 21:46

There are differing accounts of whether she dtd with Ser Christon. Depends which historical source you believe.

Exactly. If we believed the Hightower-sanctioned history, books Rhaenyra slept with everyone even the clown, and Daemon killed every man who died unexpectedly during his lifetime.

Rhaenys · 16/09/2022 04:55

Good idea for a thread. I keep reading comments in the other thread where people are speculating stuff and I keep having to stop myself from replying with spoilers!

I think the last episode happened in 310AC as they said it’d been a year since Daemon defeated the Crabfeeder who died in 309AC.

We’ve still got almost 20 years to go until Viserys dies but not much happens until then. At first I thought they’d end season 1 with his death but I’m not sure how they can now.

WhathaveIdoneagain · 18/09/2022 23:14

I know what you mean. It so hard not to say why Laenor is a bad choice for prince consort.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 19/09/2022 09:50

Have people watched it yet? Excellent work from Harwin Strong. Good father material right there.

Liking what they did with Laenor.

But Ser Christon clearly being saved from a fiery/swordy death only by the fact that he has important plot work to do in the coming wars.

And I cannot see how Visaerys can possibly live to see his grandchildren into their teens.

WhathaveIdoneagain · 19/09/2022 11:24

I have just watched it, too. Ser Harwin had to come in at one point, because he has to start fathering children soon. Ser Lonmouth has been dealt with quickly.

The show tells Alicent's story much better than the book. An intelligent Hightower woman, not just a power-hungry b*tch. She has no choice but to protect her children. Targs do put down their opponents without a question.

Criston Cole's story is fleshed out a bit more. Hell hath no fury, etc. But he still doesn't feel real. Just like Daemon, who is just a pantomime villain. Daemon must have some charisma if the Dance of the Dragons to be believed.

WhathaveIdoneagain · 19/09/2022 11:26

I guess Viserys will try the green poultice instead of the leeches.

@WinterIsComingKnitFaster This is the spoiler thread. There’s another thread for TV show pace.

WhoWasThatMaskedWoman · 20/09/2022 06:57

Yes but half my points are spoilers

Have you read the book? I’m not trying to be a dick but one of your comments is wrong and I wouldn’t want you to get anything properly spoiled for you if you don’t already know.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 20/09/2022 13:43

Yes, read the book a while ago and recently refreshed myself on the pages up to episode 3 but haven't reread the full Dance bits recently. Which bit do you disagree with?

On Visaerys what I meant was that show V was looking so very ill that I found it hard to believe he could possibly live for as long as he does in the book.. but next week's trailer confirms that he's still hanging on in there, despite the fact that he's been literally rotting for a decade.

Rhaenys · 20/09/2022 22:47

Phew. Don’t wanna be held responsible for ruining it. 😂 Viserys has got another 15 years in him from this point if they stick to book lore.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/09/2022 22:58

Matt Smith is just owning the show at this point, but I keep thinking about Daemons fate

Also, I can't see this lasting more than 3 seasons at the rate its going, maybe only 2, I'm judging that off next weeks trailer which I don't know if its ok to spoil.

This is book pace so you can say whatever.

I’m hoping for only 3 seasons. I don’t want them to drag it out for the sake of money. Better to go out with a bang.

WhathaveIdoneagain · 21/09/2022 13:46

Daemon's performance issues have been mentioned a few times. But he has no trouble conceiving with Rhaenyra in quick succession.

The trailer is interesting for next week. Rhaenyra's children do look like "strong, strapping boys".

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/09/2022 13:57

So, in the trailer, David Tennants son Ty is playing Prince Aegon. Ty is 20 but it looks like they are aiming Aegon for 14/15. Rhaenerya has her children by Leonor, none of whom look like him. Alicent declares this a massive insult. It's a massive time jump, the oldest looks about 10. So it feels like to me that this series will run up to the Dance, which will then be the second series, if they are going to push it a third series might end with Daenerys being born but Aegon III reign was kind of dull
