It's back. Starts with a great recap of the fame and fallout of series 1's success.

I can't get my head around the set up. How old are the cheerleaders exactly? Are they at the equivalent of school, further education college or university? Surely cheerleading is like an extra curricular activity, or is it a full time team? Do they pay or are they on scholarships?

Ooh thanks for this didnt know it was back! Looking forward to it. And yes I wondered about all that too!

olivehater · 12/01/2022 12:17

They are at a sort of low level university. So studying as well. But most on scholarships with a heavy focus on cheerleading. So I don’t think it’s particularly academic.
So perhaps the equivalent of doing a degree at large town college that also does some degrees or possible a poly.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 12/01/2022 12:17

YAY!!!!!

Thanks for the heads up.

I think they are mostly around Secondary School/Uni aged?
IIR they belong to a gym-so extra curricular and they would pay?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 12/01/2022 12:18

Ah thanks @olivehater I stand corrected

YukoandHiro · 12/01/2022 12:19

I opened this thread thinking it was about Cheers.

I am old.

angelopal · 12/01/2022 12:20

Also thought it was about Cheers.

jay55 · 12/01/2022 13:12

It's community college so they can only get an associates degree not the full thing, they would need to transfer to a four year college to complete their degree.
It makes it cheaper than paying four years of tuition at a four year college, and entry requirements are lower, if you do do well academically you can transfer to a really good college to complete your degree(if you can afford to).

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 12/01/2022 13:38

I just find it all so fascinating. It's quite a strange world to me. The level of skill, talent and physical fitness. How punishing it is. How there are roles for a range of physical types (but not others), how seriously some of the people take themselves. Where power lies and doesn't. It's just a fascinating insight in to a completely alien (to me) world.

Spoiler alert from season one

DD and I just watched the first episode-very very sad about jerry-you have to wonder if he had not be thrust into the limelight if it would have happened-he apparently/allegedly used his fame/power to get the photos etc.

To see the impact the show and fame has had on all of the participants and the training is compelling.

And the rivalry they are showing with the other gym is interesting-contrasting coaching styles etc

We are in awe of the level of skill and confidence needed !!!

olivehater · 12/01/2022 19:30

Just watching the first episode. I think it’s a shame for the rookies. The ones that have graduated are clearly coming back to boost their images/another slice of fame when their time at the college has passed and are taking the spots from the new kids. It should be their time.

ISpyCobraKai · 12/01/2022 19:36

I'm watching, it's great to see both colleges this time.

ISpyCobraKai · 12/01/2022 21:28

Ep5 is all about Jerry, it's a tough watch.

negomi90 · 12/01/2022 21:35

Its part of the US sports system. College (uni) sports are huge and make unis lots of money. They will be paying tuition for college, but not paying to be on the team/train. They may be paying less tuition or getting scholarships for being on the team. They won't be paid, but some of the best will have all tuition and expenses covered plus an allowance.
Most places you need to keep certain grades academically to stay on the team, but they will have support and ways of cheating the system (easy classes and tutors).
Its the same as college football which makes millions and is nearly as big as the NFL.

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 13/01/2022 09:32

I appreciate that the disadvantaged backgrounds of some of the gymnasts(?) is an important factor of the context, but I'm on episode 3 and feeling a bit uncomfortable about how much is being disclosed about some of the families.

Season 1 was absolutely shocking to watch. The coach is so cold and completely uncaring. They perform life-threatening stunts with no safety whatsoever. The amount of injuries was insane. The girls are risking their lives. And the "famous" cheerleader had the most creepy father!!!!!

XelaM · 13/01/2022 09:53

Haven't seen season 2, but season 1 was so uncomfortable to watch. They were exploiting kids from the "wrong end of the tracks". Just because those kids don't have anywhere else to go. Also, Jerry was charged with possession of child pornography and is in prison. Whole set-up is just so wrong

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 13/01/2022 10:07

Season 1 was absolutely shocking to watch. The coach is so cold and completely uncaring.

Yeah, she's not got any better in season 2. I know that there's an argument for having a hard edge so that there are clear boundaries, but I don't subscribe to it. I think it's possible to have clear boundaries and kindness.

SPOILER FROM EPISODE 3
I've just watched someone's role get changed in the middle of practice and it comes with no warning so she's gutted poor thing. Needlessly cruel.

OP posts:
poorbuthappy · 13/01/2022 10:10

We've only watched ep 1 and 2, but said the same thing about them returning. It's not fair! But won't be stopped because they know they're more likely to win with Gabi than without.

poorbuthappy · 13/01/2022 10:10

And yes, excellent to see the other college in this series.

thedarkling · 14/01/2022 07:30

Hated it. They've all fallen out with each other and fame has changed their dynamic. Agree about people coming back just to get the tv exposure - why on earth is Gabi Butler still there!

BitcherOfBlakiven · 14/01/2022 07:32

I don’t like the Navarro coach at all. She’s cold, claims she loves them all but doesn’t let them have any feelings at all.

I much prefer the TVCC dynamics.

And a predator is a predator - he would have done what he did regardless of the show.

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 14/01/2022 07:55

I don’t like the Navarro coach at all. She’s cold, claims she loves them all but doesn’t let them have any feelings at all.

I know. She demands complete commitment, so I'm absolutely gobsmacked at the hypocrisy of what Monica discloses at the start of episode 5.

OP posts:
ISpyCobraKai · 14/01/2022 08:45

I don't like her either.
La'Darius totally had the measure of her yet seemed like he still felt he owed her something, poor guy.

I don't want to say much as spoilers.

I quite like the female coach. But I'm really not keen on her other 2 coaches.

Yes Gabbi's father is awful she just sees her as a cash cow and her mum isn't much better.

Is there a thread for season 1. I've binged that season this week pure coincidence that I stumbled upon it and that season 2 is already out
