Just finished episode one and need to talk about it!!!

Didn't like much of the episode to be honest. But the ending! I'm floored! Was not expecting that.

I really enjoyed this episode, the Miranda storyline aside (I didn't actually find it as overtly annoying this week though to be fair). I loved that actor in Emily in Paris, although the accent threw me first of all and I wasn't sure if I was mistaken!

On a TMI note, I never liked the thought of tampons as a teenager, I don't think it was that unusual a reaction. I was probably in my late teens by the time I got used to them!

BitcherOfBlakiven · 27/01/2022 23:01

Re Anthony’s date - my ex has gone down the conspiracy theory route the last few years and tbh I wouldn’t put it past him to say that next Hmm

Tampons - DDs 13 and 11 both think they’re barbaric. Both started aged 11. DD1 loves cloth pads, isn’t remotely squeamish but thinks tampons are grim.

hopeishere · 27/01/2022 23:19

I like this episode. Miranda is still awful though and the script is so clunky.

AsYouWishButtercup · 27/01/2022 23:52

Lily is a 15yo teenager, they can be rather dramatic!

I also hate tampons, I never wear them, I can always feel them and it’s very uncomfortable.

Charlotte is such a good mum. Especially compared to Miranda who seemingly treats her son like a rather wilted house plant.

Needhelp101 · 28/01/2022 00:26

Anthony is the best thing about this travesty but then he always had the great lines.
" And then it's just a sleigh ride into menopause"
"Chanello!"
"I'm going to shoplift just so he can feel me up"

His "GET OUT!!" line tonight genuinely had me laughing out loud.

EmmaH2022 · 28/01/2022 00:57

@KillingMeDeftly

I think the Emily in Paris actor who's just shown up as the owner of the club was once in a SATC episode.
I cba to check but yes, I think he was in the one with Carrie having a one night stand who left $1000 on the nightstand. He was with the group where she met that guy.

Was he in Devil wears Prada?

I love Emily in Paris so I was pleased to see him!

EmmaH2022 · 28/01/2022 01:00

And I did look it up
Totally wrong, he was the salesman when Carrie took Jack to the Prada shop.

EachandEveryone · 28/01/2022 01:16

Im surprised they missed Cleveland I guess we were all wrong there thinking she would be with someone. I enjoyed this week and thank goodness they have let Rock just be. For now.

I think tampons are grim and I used them for many years. Now though, yuck, chemically treated wodges of cotton wool, no. Mooncup and reusable pads plus period pants for back up if needed.
WitchSharkadder · 28/01/2022 01:45

Just watched. I can't decide whether I liked the Charlotte and Lily scenes or hated them. I think, for the comedic value, they were great. But at the same time if I was the parent in that situation there would have been so much eye rolling. And to all the posters who are concerned about teens aversion to tampons, I would hope part of that is due to how much more popular environmentally friendly options have become in recent years and awareness of reusability. Although of course nobody has to use tampons if they don't want to and that doesn't mean you're disconnected from your body.

I agree steve was great in the episode, but everyone seems to have forgotten he cheated on Miranda. He hasn't always been the good guy. Although I can't stand how they've written Miranda this series, she used to be strong and no nonsense, now she's almost a caricature. Also can't stand Che.

I like the other three new characters though, my complaint is that there doesn't seem to be enough time to flesh them out properly. I'm almost wanting a spin off series of this spin off series where they are the 'group' and the usual gang are just secondary characters who pop up at the occasional brunch.

TangledUp789 · 28/01/2022 03:29

People haven't forgotten that Steve cheated, but they were very different situations. Steve slept with another woman on one occasion and was genuinely remorseful and upset. He confessed to Miranda (when he could have kept quiet) and wanted to fix their relationship.

Miranda had sex with Che then spent six months fantasising about her (trying to meet up again in that time) then three weeks fucking her. Only confessing at that point because she would have lost Che otherwise. And she showed no real guilt - just look at her 'I'm in a rom com!' moment straight after leaving Steve broken hearted.

I'm not defending Steve for cheating - it was a really shit thing to do - but it's just not on the same level.

If Miranda had met Che (or preferably someone nice with a personality instead of a list of identities), been almost uncontrollably drawn to them and because of that faced the fact that her marriage was over. Been sad about it, maybe referenced that she was never quite able to forgive Steve for cheating, but also sorry for hurting him after so long together. If she gave a shit about how Brady would feel about it. Because even when you are nearly grown, your parents' marriage ending would affect you. If we saw her making an effort to deal with the fallout. It would have been more realistic and sympathetic.

It would also be more realistic and relatable to the audience if her attraction to someone who is biologically female was addressed. Lots of older women in relationships with other women identified as straight for decades. But very few that I know suddenly started to feel attraction to women/one woman and didn't do an awful lot of thinking about this new side of themselves. The Miranda of old would have researched the hell out of middle aged same sex attraction. She'd have read articles, ordered herself Dear John, I Love Jane instead of/as well as her women's alcoholic book. When Charlotte asked her in the park if she was gay now, she would have been ready for a long discussion about it. But either through bad writing or an unwillingness to discuss the fact that Miranda is experiencing a first same sex attraction due too the casting of a NB identifying actor, we are told Miranda doesn't care about being attracted to a female person for the first time.

Cynthia Nixon said in an interview during the week that she had suggested Sara Ramirez be cast as her love interest. And if Ramirez hadn't taken the role, her part would have been written completely differently. I wonder if maybe Nya's character would have been the woman she falls for. It makes some of Nya's story make more sense in the context of the show. Their awkward first meeting, growing friendship, Nya's marriage situation where two people love each other but have strong opposing feelings about an aspect of marriage that there can be no compromise on. In a better written series I could totally buy Nya and Miranda bonding over their legal background and marriage problems and falling for each other completely unexpectedly.

WitchSharkadder · 28/01/2022 09:49

I agree with you @TangledUp789 about how badly Miranda has handled it and the uncaring and selfish way she's gone about ending her marriage. The Miranda of old would have, even if desperately unhappy in her marriage, been sympathetic and apologetic to Steve, she wouldn't have ran off to Philadelphia half a second after announcing she wants to separate rather than sticking round to support her son through his parents marriage breakdown.

I do think Steve has been very badly treated by her in this storyline. I'm just saying he's hardly been innocent throughout their marriage and that, on some level, there would be an aspect of 'well he cheated so why shouldn't I' in Miranda's mind. It's human to feel that way. Although it's a massive shame that there was zero discussion or reference to this.

WitchSharkadder · 28/01/2022 09:50

And I agree with every word of your post @Wanderingowl

user1471543094 · 28/01/2022 10:48

Is Miranda's alcoholism over now? She read the book and now she is cured. Yay for her! Especially will all these life changes going on, not a bother to her

DottyHarmer · 28/01/2022 11:19

I thought that: never was someone cured of alcoholism so fast Hmm

DaggerIsle · 28/01/2022 12:58

Did she even read the book?

Lily is the youngest 15 year old ever. She presumably goes to an exclusive private school where all the posh kids are doing drugs and having sex and she can't handle a tampon without mummy there to hold her hand?
And having to bring her water????
She's not a great mother BTW, she's totally infantilising her.

KillingMeDeftly · 28/01/2022 13:13

There were so many other ways Lily's character could've developed - the impact of transracial adoption and wanting to know more about her birth parents' background/culture for one - but they decided to make tampons her storyline??

Wednesdayafternoon · 28/01/2022 13:57

I interpretatrd the Lilly story line as that using a tampon was just something that she was really anxious about and against? That doesn't mean that she doesn't have anything else going on in her life, just means that something she wasn't comfortable with I don't really see what the big deal is about that. I didn't use a tampon until I was in my twenties 🙈 I thought it was quite light hearted and a bit funny!
I'm sure as the season goes on for future series they will explore her character a lot more. Personally I'm looking forward to Aidan coming back because the actor did confirm last year that he was going to be part of the new series!

KillingMeDeftly · 28/01/2022 15:06

Final episode prediction: Carrie is on date 3 with Peter, it's finally going well and then BAM - a newly divorced Aiden walks into the same restaurant!

Oh yes.

And didn’t he smoke later on abs that’s one of the reasons they split

BitcherOfBlakiven · 28/01/2022 16:23

I also wondered if Charlotte would be pregnant Grin

Nah I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve used a tampon, I’m a fan of cloth pads and period pants.
