Just finished episode one and need to talk about it!!!

Didn't like much of the episode to be honest. But the ending! I'm floored! Was not expecting that.

@KillingMeDeftly - yes!!! I did!!! I totally did!!

The whole series is a bit meh. Watchable only because I loved SATC. It will be interesting to see if it is renewed for a second series.

I cringed when I noticed the wheelchair. Of course she would be

That actress is actually a wheelchair user though

That's the whole point though.

I just don't get what they are going for. The humour is very limited, the women seem to be unable to navigate their lives and they don't even seem that close any more.

The woke storylines feel like virtue signalling moments thrown in there without much context or fluidity.
You could have a gender fluid character just be, instead of them being defined by their gender (or lack of).
You could have a girl in a wheelchair, instead of a sweary, loud, overcompensating character.
It's all very... box-ticking.

The only one who acts and feels like an older version of himself is Anthony. And Harry.

LlamaParma · 25/12/2021 00:43

The girl in the wheelchair, Ali Stroker, is not an unknown who’s been picked because of her disability. She has been in a few TV shows (including the Glee Project and then Glee) and is fairly big on Broadway too and she does often seem to play the part a woman who is openly sexual. I remember reading an interview with her saying she does like to play that kind of character to show that disabled people can be just as happy, sexually active, Playing the field etc as able bodied people. I think it’s a great thing they’ve cast her.

JacquelineCarlyle · 25/12/2021 01:48

I agree @LlamaParma - I think she's great and no message shoe-horned in but simply a person doing her job, who also happens to be in a wheelchair.

DaggerIsle · 25/12/2021 16:59

Nothing against the actress but the way she appeared out of nowhere, swore repeatedly, exchanged sexually inappropriate comments with a colleague (in front of their boss) and left, was so....blah.
It does feel like another tick on the woke, inclusive, minority, disability bingo card.
There's so much of it you can't focus on the story.
It's so.... self-congratulatory.

JMAngel1 · 25/12/2021 19:59

@DaggerIsle
I totally agree

TwinkleToppy · 26/12/2021 21:42

@Creamcrackersandricecakes

I spent ages yesterday trying to remember where I'd seen the actress playing Seema before - finally gave in and Wiki'd her; she was Saul's wife in Homeland, a role she was great in, but criminally underused. Looking forward to seeing more of her, she's fabulous. Not so sure about all the other peripheral characters they keep introducing, I'm starting to lose track of them all.
Agree. I thought she was quite similar to Samantha's plate throwing artist girlfriend.
hopeishere · 27/12/2021 16:08

Place marking. I'm not impressed so far. The "comedy" bit with Che was excruciating.

AnnunciataZ · 28/12/2021 12:27

The gender stuff is bollocks and Che is annoying, but I like that there are characters of colour who don't seem like just window dressing. Seema, LTW and Nia are good additions. And I'm not bothered that they've hired an actress in a wheelchair.

The Mail dub anything vaguely left of centre as "woke" so it's no surprise that they aren't keen 🙄

EachandEveryone · 28/12/2021 12:36

I thinnk its the Che stuff that has put most people off and the fact poor Rose seems on the transition bus.

cruffin · 28/12/2021 13:04

I'm so distracted by Charlotte's face. She was such a beautiful woman, it's a shame she felt the need to do that.

KillingMeDeftly · 30/12/2021 15:06

Hmm I feel like today's episode wasn't quite as good as last weeks but the hip surgery plot line was a bit of a departure. Nice plug for SJP's own shoe brand at the end and she did look fabulous in that striped dress.

I'm still unsure about the Rose storyline - I felt like all Charlotte and Harry's feelings were valid yet the teachers were too keen on "affirmation" etc.

I'm also wondering what next with Miranda's storyline - I'm guessing she will fall for Che but Che won't be interested?

VodselForDinner · 30/12/2021 18:18

I hated today’s episode.

The timeline felt way off. Is every episode supposed to span 3 months?

Why is Carrie so needy?
Remember when she sent Aidan to pick an injured and naked Miranda up off her bathroom floor? Why would Miranda literally sit by her bed to be her pee woman?

Che and Miranda in the kitchen. Ick.

From what you read on MN and social media the schools reaction and dropping the ball involving the parents was pretty spot on. Affirm the child no matter what and if the parents don’t immediately love the changes then they’re neglectful bigoted dinosaurs

Loved Harry in this episode, I always loved him!

The sex scene Shock and Carrie waking up - there’s the old SATC toe curling but brilliant moment!

I think it’s just the next episode that’s a time jump

But on Carrie’s texts to Samantha it said her last message (the one thanking her for the flowers) it said “Thursday” implying there’d been less than a week since the funeral Confused

NynaeveSedai · 30/12/2021 19:03

I thought todays episode was great!
Che is awful yes but she's meant to be I think. She's selfish and boundary crossing and ignores social norms. I think Miranda falling for a woman (yes yes gender identity blah) is totally in character as is her alcohol issue and the way she dealt with it.
Charlotte's face is a shame but her character is played well. I loved the scene where Carrie was peeing.
I also thought the way charlotte and Harry handled the school was good and it wasn't as clear about the transition train as I feared (though I'm sure it will end with Harry and charlotte being 'educated' and seeing the error of their ways)

AsYouWishButtercup · 30/12/2021 19:20

Che is awful and rude. Who lights up a spliff in the home of a woman recovering from major surgery?!

NutellaEllaElla · 30/12/2021 19:51

I'm catching up and GOD THIS IS AWFUL!
The hip surgery, the toilet situation, Che, all of it. I'm watching out of blind loyalty and wishes.

Pl242 · 30/12/2021 21:21

Quite apart from anything else, I still can’t buy all the bloody gushing from Miranda. Taking stock of her life? Yes. Bored of her life? Yes. Drinking? Possibly. Gay? Possibly. But just all this gushing at Che. Can’t bare it. So out of character.

Yorkshirelass04 · 30/12/2021 21:44

What did I just watch happen in Carrie's apartment 😖😖😖

The tequila and weed
Che and Miranda
The pee

DaggerIsle · 30/12/2021 22:19

I swear Miranda was barking!

Re Rose/Rock, no way would the school have not approached the parents, specially as Charlotte is a PTA queen.

To me the breakout star of the show is Anthony. Loved his giggle at the lunch, it felt very real from the actor.

Re the Samantha texting. Ridiculous. Are we seriously expected to believe she's ghosted all her friends over money, but is now sending texts celebrating her friend's vagina?
Ridiculous.

Wanderingowl · 30/12/2021 23:30

Not to be "that poster" but Miranda being attracted to Che doesn't make her gay. It makes her bisexual. She may not be happy with Steve anymore but she was attracted to him once. And sexy Robert. And the guy she let think she was an air steward. And many other men in the past.

It's relatively normal for a woman her age to suddenly realise they are attracted to women too. There are plenty of threads in the relationships board by women who have developed an attraction to a female friend/colleague. Obviously it's not what the majority of women experience but it's not super unusual either. It's not closeted women coming to terms with their homosexuality, just women realising they have a broader selection of 'types' than they previously acknowledged.
