Anyone going to be watching?

OP posts:

Edgewater...presuming this is a place where something bad happened. Did she do something illegal? Did she have a breakdown? Something that might make her seem unreliable or unstable?

I can't get over the complete lack of feeling between any of the characters. There is no sense of love between the couple which is unsurprising given the DV storyline but you can't ever imagine them being close or in love. It's all so wooden and clinical. Same with the kids.

Very very odd so far. I feel like the story has potential but the acting and characterisation is all wrong.

Classica · 18/10/2021 11:24

I presume she's aiming for 'emotionally shutdown after years of abuse' but it's coming off as a bit one-dimensional and wooden at times.

LazyMareofEastown · 18/10/2021 13:43

I've bailed after the first episode.

It's just all so thoroughly unconvincing. The writing is poor, the acting is wooden and stilted. None of the dialogue is believable (I even found myself googling whether JFrog had kids in real life as the way she spoke to her "son" was just so unrealistic and cold). I just can't suspend my disbelief long enough to give a solitary shit about the characters or the story.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 18/10/2021 13:44

I'm going to stick with it, I think.

There's a real feeling of menace whenever they are alone together. I just kept expecting him to lamp her one at any second.

I was a bit 🤔 that she managed to Google a YouTube video about how to break into a locked briefcase, and immediately know how to do it - all within the five minutes she had before the courier knocked on the door!

And I was expecting him to go mad about not wearing the black dress.

Yes! Those heels in the woods 🙄 And how did she get home from the woods? She didn't drive herself there, did she? We saw her get out of the back of a taxi.

And how did she get home from the picnic at the office construction site?

So many questions...

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2021 13:44

There are four more episodes to go and im not sure where it's going to be honest ( maybe Edgewater!)
It Could be the name of a rehab clinic ?

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2021 13:48

From the picnic in the building they didn't eat , she then went to the woods as husband had to go off. I thought she drove there to meet up with the DI man and followed him to where the body of the young woman is? She only contacted him because husband lied to her about being unfaithful.
I think I would just go to the police , but obviously the mystery surrounding Edgewater is stopping her from being rational and I still think she is involved in this killing.

Jux · 18/10/2021 14:05

It's all grey. This may be a device to reflect her perception and perhaps if she finally gets away from him it'll suddenly blaze with colour. Or something. But it's def grey rock atm, and therefore v boring, like her life and so on.

She is utterly wooden; we need flashbacks to her youth when she was carefree and happy to show the contrast and make the point deliberate.

Or, is she the abuser in some twisted way - she killed the fox, she killed the rabbit? Unlikely, but.

FuggyPidding · 18/10/2021 14:13

Just watched episode 2 and agree with the comments re wooden acting, poor characters and cliched script!
Such a shame, I was hoping for a gripping thriller!
Saying that, I think I'll stick with it as I'm curious to see how it'll pan out - though it may be a painful watch in more ways than one!!

Gonnagetgoing · 18/10/2021 15:28

It's poor - but it's a tough subject. I did wonder how did she manage to get out of the house to go to lunch with her DH - she left her 2 DC in the house alone, you don't do that as parents!

Same - re the black dress!

He booked a babysitter
Classica · 18/10/2021 15:36

Tbh Sunday evening is a night where I'm looking for an hour's easy watching so I may stick with it

Gonnagetgoing · 18/10/2021 16:06

@excelledyourself - must've missed that!

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2021 17:39

She is a bit one dimensional isn't she?
Very cold with the boys too.
The fake fire thing they have is horrible and a bit sinister looking !

thisplaceisapigsty · 18/10/2021 18:09

I keep thinking there is a twist, like she is the abuser, she is the murderer, the PI bloke is imaginary... She deliberately sets up tension sometimes, like replacing the rabbit then telling the kids the truth about it, seeming to agree to wearing the dress he likes then wearing something else - so is she trying to provoke him or is she asserting some independence? Agreeing to be blindfolded by him didn't seem to worry her half as much as you'd expect and she keeps meeting PI bloke for no good reason. There is maybe a reason we don't know the full contents of the letter from Yuki, just snippets? She seemed to find the letter much too easily as well as if she knew what she was looking for. I hope it does all make sense in the end!

the80sweregreat · 18/10/2021 18:33

She did find that letter really quickly
She didn't even try to read it on her phone afterwards.

I agree with this theory - or something along the lines of thinking that the PI guy is a figment of her imagination. She knows what her husband has done to the woman he worked with (killed her after an affair) but is having some sort of psychotic break and the imaginary PI guy is her way of blaming someone else when she actually is the one to kill her husband (but she does it as she feels she has no choice).

I'm rambling a bit - but definitely feel there will be some sort of weird twist.

PennyRoyal · 18/10/2021 20:25

Agreeing with some of these theories. Perhaps she killed Yuki when/if she found out about the affair and this is her psychotic way of dealing with it.
And she's definitely cold with the boys - comes in, no hellos or anything, just tells them to go straight up to bed. Maybe they're not real?
Although it was touching in the morning when she woke up next to her little bit and he said I love you.

PennyRoyal · 18/10/2021 20:25

*boy

Hope478 · 18/10/2021 21:24

She was in Edgewater rehab for having some kind of breakdown after murdering the woman her husband was having an affair with, or something to that effect. Husband covered for her. Now imagining PI.

Hope478 · 18/10/2021 21:28

Also she definitely killed the rabbit!

JacquelineCarlyle · 18/10/2021 22:58

Good theories @Hope478!

MajesticWhine · 18/10/2021 23:20

It makes sense (sort of) that Ed is imaginary. Other theory on Twitter is that Ed was partner of the murdered woman and is trying to get her to kill her husband so he doesn't have to, as revenge for the affair.

JacquelineCarlyle · 18/10/2021 23:46

Oh I could see that too @MajesticWhine - his lack of motive for helping her was what made me think he was imaginary but if there's an actual motive, then I could be entirely wrong.
