Yes he went straight into high level drug addiction, looked as rough as a bear's arse for 5 days then dragged himself out of it again.
Unlike his alcoholism , no drug relapse (maybe the writers twigged what a stupid out of character storyline it was )
Phil is very much Drugs Are For Mugs .
But his family ran a pub so alcohol was a constant feature .

To get back to Jean and money.....i assume she would get benefits due to her bipolar? I know it's all US now but she'd get DLA/PIP in the old days surely, even if it's not high rates?

Good luck with getting PIP for bipolar which is under control with medication. Jean manages all her ‘daily activities’ perfectly well. She also works as a cleaner afaik

One would assume all slaters wouid be on benifits but all were skint when lots of adults there working

Has anyone on EE or Corrie or any soap ever been shown to claim PIP, go through an assessment, mandatory consideration, tribunal, 3-year renewal etc?

In fact has any character ever mentioned tax credits and housing benefit or UC / housing element, especially when they start living with their latest partner after about five minutes, move in and out of houses, have another baby?

I remember Pauline Fowler was frequently off daaaahn the Citizens' Advice but since then everyone seems to simply manage on fresh air and thieving.

TBH, I wouldn't expect a soap to deal with the tedium of claiming benefits or explaining where the money comes from.

They did with Dee once when she lost job and had to go job centre and showed how awkward it was and demoralising and later when she went to food bank. They also mention a lot with Bernies mum about changes and being out money.

It’s just annoying when slaters all claiming poverty yet had 5 adults and umpteen kids under one roof claiming poverty when fact all sharing one rent and unlimited would been seriously cheap.

My friends 19 year old son claims PIP for bi polar. He's is managed although he still has issues at time. Anyway I just don't overthink Eastenders otherwise it would blow my brain with all the inconsistencies. I don't like Stacey's character. She's miserable and hypocritical but then I guess most characters are 🤣

I remember Denise being really poor and on benefits for a few weeks she also needed the food bank that Cora helped to run and was so hungry she collapsed doing her GCSE exam and had to pawn her necklace for money ( which she did get back )
Not sure how she climbed out of her poverty trap and ended up running a salon that few seem to use , but she did and it's all not been mentioned since! She then she started seeing Jack I think ?
I think they like to try real life social issues, but it doesn't carry on for too long!
