New thread!

Why would Canada send Serena back to Gilead? They want to prosecute her for war crimes.

My heart was in my mouth when June and Nick were together. We knew there was a betrayal coming but weren't sure where from.

@Clawdy

Poor Luke, whatever he does, someone on here will have a go at him. I too thought he was lovely tonight.
Agree it’s been good to see Luke’s character develop and to know he hasn’t been a passive entity in Canada
Breathmiller · 15/08/2021 22:36

I also wondered about Nick having a handmaid?

Was that their goodbye? "Try to he happy"

I noticed Hannah was still in pink. She must be getting close to an age where she won't be protected from the roles of women/girls in Gilead. Wasn't Nicks first wife very young? Is it not starting to get a bit time depending in getting Hannah out? Will she be married off? Do commander's daughters get more time than econo families daughter's?

ElephantOfRisk · 15/08/2021 22:37

Yes, I was the one castigating Luke for not doing anything so I'm happy to eat humble pie on that score.

I thought there was an interesting moment when June came back and saw Luke waiting on the step, as if he'd been sat there the entire day. She'd just come from the man that she is in love with but looked like she came home to a man she felt loves her.

MotionActivatedDog · 15/08/2021 22:38

Luke is in a horrible position. He has spent 7? Years trying to find his wife and daughter, he took in his wife’s child with another man who he knows she loves and raised her as his own child, whilst being without his own child, he finally is reunited with his wife and tries to be understanding and supportive and everything she needs him to be whilst also knowing she still loves someone else who she can’t be with and that if she could be, she would leave Luke and take Nichole with her.

There was some amazing acting from OT Fagbenle in that episode.

I think the reason we all thought Nick and June would be ambushed is because it was very similar scenery to when they went to the house to meet Hannah that time - snow, empty house/building/meeting your own child that's been living with someone else.

It was lovely that Nick had gathered all that information about Hannah.

I feel something dramatic is afoot next week...

So the puttnams were brought to put the frighteners on Fred and Serena. Very clever.

I am not having a go at him. He's a character in the program and not a real person. His lines are written for him. I am just saying that is the perception of him I am getting from what the writers were trying to portray in that scene. It's constant shifts of power and he is gaining power too.

I actually wasn't paying attention when the Putnams were there - can anyone explain what happened and why Fred has turned?
CloseYourEyesAndSee · 15/08/2021 22:46

can anyone explain what happened and why Fred has turned?

Male puttnam told Fred that nobody in gilead is trying to get him out. Female puttnam told Serena that they will take her baby and raise him. Serena as usual spelt it out to stupid Fred and made him see that they had no power or status in gilead regardless of the pregnancy and that she could be made a handmaid and their son taken from them. He realised he would be safer in Canada than trying to get back to gilead.

WorldsBestBoss · 15/08/2021 22:48

Also, and I think a PP pointed this out, why would Nick hide his wedding ring? He has nothing to gain from June thinking he's not married. It's not like they can be together. Why keep it a secret?
Or did he just want a precious moment with June without the awkwardness of having to discuss his wife?

DHandInterview · 15/08/2021 22:49

Fred turned because he realised he's on his own, no one in Gilead is doing anything to try and help him, they've basically washed their hands of him.

But Gilead will try and claim Serena and the baby, and Serena could end up being sent to the colonies or becoming a handmaid, and the baby taken off her.

June assumed it was her testimony that put the frighteners on him but I don't think it was, it was the visit.

Why can't nick give himself up and stay in Canada? Is it too late for him? Why did he allow himself to become a commander, could he not have stayed as the driver? I guess he was forced.

MotionActivatedDog · 15/08/2021 22:51

I think nick would be in prison in Canada. At least in Gilead he has some power over himself.

I don't know. Maybe he's got nothing to get him immunity.

He's all tied up in Mayday as well - probably feels like he can't leave that. It's very annoying though that someone like Fred can have freedom and Nick is at risk of prison. Up until tonight's episode I reckon he could have been given immunity in a deal, but they won't be interested in what he has to say now they have Waterford.
Clawdy · 15/08/2021 22:59

A bit worrying to think of Fred and Serena free in Canada, when they have a group of fanatics supporting them.

gingercat81 · 15/08/2021 23:08

Nick is in with the very top of society and could give loads of insight into the way it works and lots of dirt on the other commanders including the Waterford's. He could do what the Waterford's are doing to get immunity. There are many loopholes in the plot.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 15/08/2021 23:15

Nick is clearly working on something inside Gilead that he can't leave. How else would he have access to 'friendlies' to take the pictures of Hannah?
