New thread!

Why would Canada send Serena back to Gilead? They want to prosecute her for war crimes.

Maybe Canada could exchange Serena and/or Fred for Hannah? Not sure why they would but it's a nice idea Grin

Marbsyearofhealth · 27/07/2021 15:33

Blessed be the thread! Only just finding this now so far into season 4. Definitely wanted more this week it seemed to fly by and the recap was theeee longest ever.

MotionActivatedDog · 27/07/2021 15:36

Oh I’ve just had a horrible thought. In homeland they did a prisoner exchange but it was only possible because the taliban had kidnapped Saul. I’m hoping THMT isn’t going that way! Who is valuable that Gilead could kidnap from Canada?

CleanQueen123 · 27/07/2021 15:44

Praise be for a new thread!

LODReturn · 27/07/2021 15:47

I guess they could arrest an aid convoy?

MotionActivatedDog · 27/07/2021 15:48

They could!! Moira??

OP posts:
RiaOverTheRainbow · 27/07/2021 16:18

I'm not sure that Fred and Serena are liked/respected enough for the powers that be in Gilead to make a huge effort to get them back. Maybe if they feared they'd give up state secrets that could make Gilead vulnerable?

MotionActivatedDog · 27/07/2021 16:59

I think the pregnancy changes things. It would make them valuable in Gilead. Not respected, but valuable.

I agree that it was weird the way June was so apologetic about not having Hannah with her.

And what were Luke's facial expressions all about when he first saw her? He hardly looked overjoyed, or relieved, or even happy?!

And that comment June made to Moira about 'knowing what he's like' was just really wierd. I feel like there's more going to come of that.

I wonder if Canada will even publicise that June has escaped? Politically I can't see that they can risk reprisals if they find out she got out via an aid mission. They could say she made it over the border on her own, but then the soldiers doing the inspection on the boat might recognise her and say that's how she got out!

OverByYer · 27/07/2021 17:12

Ooh new thread. Blessed day.
I’m just about to listen to the podcast whilst I make tea

CiaoForNiao · 27/07/2021 17:17

I fucking found you. thanks to active threads

Maybe they could contact Nick somehow and smuggle Luke in to Gilead. Nick will then pass him off as his driver or something and then they will kidnap Hannah and get her and Nick back to Canada.

Totally implausible but nothing would surprise me.

Well it's hardly surprising he didn't know what to do or say, is it? He knows that she has fallen in love with someone else. He also knows that she chose to stay in Gilead rather than leave with the 86 children she rescued. So he is probably very, very unsure of what her reaction to him is going to be.

Anyone finding it a bit drawn out? Might be just my mood...

RiaOverTheRainbow · 27/07/2021 17:54

I think the apologising was June externalising her guilty at leaving Hannah, rather than rationally believing Luke would resent her for it. I've done similar when my mental health was bad.

I think the most recent episode needed dragging out to be honest. After all the times June has tried to escape before, this time she has finally had the balls to go through with it and not get caught. It's what the show has been building up to for years.
ChequerBoard · 27/07/2021 18:26

I agree it needed a focussed episode on June's big decision to leave Gilead and Hannah behind (for now).

But I also agree that the long drawn out pauses and long focussed shots of June's face are losing impact and are becoming repetitive and tedious.

GrandPrismatic · 27/07/2021 18:57

Praise be! I found you. Checking in.

CurbsideProphet · 27/07/2021 21:05

I just want to reassure anyone worried about spoilers from discussing The Testaments - Elisabeth Moss has said this tv adaptation of THT will not follow the storylines of The Testaments as it is set approx 15 years in the future, but it will likely have its own adaptation in the future.

Lnix · 27/07/2021 21:06

Guys, what is the podcast people are talking about and how to I listen to it??

It’s called Eyes on Gilead…I listen on Spotify podcasts - not sure if you can pick it on other media. I really like the chat! Those ladies have interesting perspectives and often notice things that went right over my head in the show.
RidingMyBike · 27/07/2021 21:15

Blessed day!

OnTheBoardwalk · 27/07/2021 21:34

PitchImperfect interesting comparison on Abraham

I was thinking Jacob due to the Rachel and Leah facilities aka the Red Centres. Well that and I got drunk and watched Joseph last weekend 😀

Clawdy · 27/07/2021 22:28

I wondered if June would keep her new name when she arrived in Canada, so Gilead would assume she'd died in the explosions.

I think she'll have to stay under the radar or else future aid missions will be compromised. Oonagh/Una would be most unhappy! She and Moira are now finished as a working or romantic partnership.

June doesn't leave anyone who touches her life unscathed, does she?

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 28/07/2021 06:03

Agreeing with a comment on the previous thread - I think would have been better for June to escape to Canada with Nicole. We could have watched June's life in Canada, and have another handmaid become the main character in Gilead.

I would have liked to see June struggling with guilt about leaving Hannah, raising Nicole, clashing with Luke, and trying to help Mayday from Canada.

I could imagine June joining humanitarian missions back and Luke disagreeing with this, or her contacting the main plot handmaid in Gilead with plans, and Luke feeling she should focus on moving on.

My enjoyment of the series plummeted when June didn't leave with Nicole. Until then the tension had been built up on June trying to survive and escape, and it genuinely felt that anything could happen. When she didn't leave, and didn't face repercussions, it took a lot of the tension out of the plot.

Now she has gone to Canada it feels a bit FINALLY. Glad to see the story moving on finally.
