Anyone watching? Bench Seat Man has gone!

OP posts:
RubyFowler · 07/06/2021 23:13

Its a shame when one architect does a design that is within budget and gives them what they've asked for, and the other does something that is never going to be within budget, but is totally wow so they go with it. Feels unfair on the other architect - she could have done a 70k plus design too!

colouringcrayons · 07/06/2021 23:15

They did say it was their choices over finish that pushed the budget up though

Puffalicious · 07/06/2021 23:17

An interesting one tonight. I didn't really like either of the designs! Agree that what they got in the end was better than the design. Where do these people get 20 grand MORE than the loan they got? Every, bloody week!

AncientandFabulous · 07/06/2021 23:31

Dh has said he wants to have an architect do our house. I’ve told him I’m only having Laura and no bench seating. He wants a double height wow factor. I’ve said I’m not losing a bedroom or spending stupid money we don’t have on a gimmick.

Just wish they’d stick to the budget! Be realistic.

I KNEW the small slot side windows would not make the final reveal as Planning would have turned them down. Those were my thoughts exactly.

Why would they not be allowed?
LadyEloise · 08/06/2021 09:08

It was a lovely transformation.

More bench seating !!!
Split level would be a nightmare with children, guests, older people and those who are infirm !

BruceAndNosh · 08/06/2021 09:14

Why would they not be allowed?
They would be looking straight into the garden of next door. Or at their side wall so the couple building wouldn't want them.

hennybeans · 08/06/2021 10:36

The finished result was nice, but quite standard. I am enjoying how the architects are explaining their reasoning more than last series it seems. But this week's couple seemed to have left everything special out from the architect's design. I suppose it was to stay closer to budget, but I don't feel like they ended up with the essence of the architect's vision and design. Maybe the architect's fault for designing something they couldn't afford/ get permission for/ find willing builders.

BrightGoldenHazeintheMeadow · 08/06/2021 14:19

Love this programme and love this thread for articulating what I've been thinking, especially about the split levels. My mum had a kitchen with a step and it was such a nuisance, particularly as she got older.

I thought the woman architect was a lot more practical than some of the men. She talked about the negatives of having a completely open plan arrangement which you rarely hear about on these sort of programmes.

It would also be great to hear where they put their clothes out to dry and where they'll put all their junk from the garage.

I also loved that the husband didn't like sand :)

bendmeoverbackwards · 08/06/2021 17:48

I’d love to see a big open plan arrangement as the starting point and teens who hate it 😂

JustDanceAddict · 08/06/2021 17:55

We used to have totally open plan and it was great when kids were young, but it would’ve been a mare when they were teens - much prefer a kitchen/diner & separate reception.

I love my teens but that love might be battered a little if we all had to live in one room downstairs...

Absolutely! Sitting in front room right now- lovely peace- whilst DS3 asleep and DS1 and DS2 (pesky but lovely teens) are both next door debating something about a youtube mountain biking video on the other TV whilst munching randomly from the fridge. I love that I'm not privvy to the details!
bendmeoverbackwards · 09/06/2021 21:13

And also why is everyone on shows like these bloody extroverts who love entertaining and want ‘big sociable spaces’? Occasionally it would be nice to see some miserable fuckers who want a bit of peace Grin

Yep. Smile And why do they never discuss where they are going to dry their washing??

That is a very good point. Ideally we would have a totally separate sound proof room that has a wall of plug sockets for all the tech and those bi fold windows so my teen gets some sunlight. I want a hallway and reception that is also separate from the living space so guests never see my piles of paperwork, gardening bits and plates and mugs I left on the table.
BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 09/06/2021 22:06

This series is quite bland and samey.

I would also love to see a reverse open plan episode.

This made me laugh Grin I agree though, everyone wants open plan.. I want a nice quiet nook I can hide away from my children in..
jay55 · 09/06/2021 22:19

Yes remember the musical family who went all open plan? I imagine their kids now spend all their time at other people's houses.

BruceAndNosh · 09/06/2021 23:49

They did keep the front living room separate, didn't they?

billysboy · 10/06/2021 07:10

It’s a pity they don’t make the architect more accountable for the budget £ 50k turned into 70 with an en-suite and utility still to do and the owner out all his plumbing work in for free

Be great for the owners to turn to the architect and pay them to project manage it and then explain why it didn’t come in budget

The other designer had really thought about how it would be used rather than an unrealistic idea that if your man wasn’t a plumber and they finished everything would have cost nearer to £90k

It’s a great program and entertaining to watch but just be a bit more honest about the budget as this is one of the hardest things to get right and stick to

hennybeans · 10/06/2021 08:00

We're having an architect draw up plans for our house at the moment. If he came back with a design way beyond our budget, no matter how impressive, I feel like that would be quite bad service in the real world.

I guess it doesn't make good TV to show families who have a small budget so end up with a basic rectangle added to the back of their house; Not very inspirational. Maybe the families should be upfront that they've got an extra 40k squirrelled away that they could use. Maybe the producers prefer for them to have a smaller budget at the start so it seems more in keeping with average families.

Buggerthebotox · 10/06/2021 08:12

It's all a bit samey now. I tend to look at the interesting bits and scoot to the end for the result. I like the bit where they show another inspirational house.

However I'd like to see more of the planning issues, budgeting and general hassle as that would be more realistic.

Those massive "entertaining" kitcheny spaces don't really do it for me either, miserable antisocial bugger that I am... Grin
