Anyone watching? Bench Seat Man has gone!

Those windows would have been a huge chunk of the budget.

Wonder what their house is worth now.

Puffinhead · 24/05/2021 21:14

It wasn’t to my taste - too many shiny surfaces and too white - but each to their own. I think the kitchen actually looks a bit cramped too. They seem to have got a lot for their money though.
I like the idea of double-height but in reality I’d prefer the extra room.

Puffinhead · 24/05/2021 21:15

By cramped, I meant the accessibility.

PiuVinoPerFavore · 24/05/2021 21:29

Lovely couple and they look so happy with a brilliant design. Think they chose the right architect this week. I love Laura's style, their house was way too stark for me but each to their own. Not sad to see bench-seating man away, that was getting beyond the joke.

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/05/2021 21:34

@Noflora

The chap's living space is crammed, there is the back of the huge sofa, the long table, the island all blocking flow. They are impassable rectangles in a line.
What is this obsession with one big room??
SunflowersAndLavender · 24/05/2021 21:37

Bench Seat Man has gone!

Oh thank god. I'm not sure I could have stomached another season of him turning perfectly good houses into the inside of a Frankie and Benny's or something that looks like a Haven mobile home.

SunflowersAndLavender · 24/05/2021 21:38

And the bath! Who can forget his flip-top sofa with a hidden bath inside it? Genius. Not.

camelfinger · 24/05/2021 21:45

I wasn’t that keen on either design overall. I find it hard to imagine that suburban Londoners would settle for anything less than maximising all the space. It would be great to live there as a couple, but would need too much cleaning with two grown up boys. I’m glad that the younger son got a biggish room, Laura’s choice seemed unliveable for him. I like this programme and how they seem to pick interesting, positive couples rather than the moaners on other property programmes. I was trying to work out when it was filmed - looked a hot summer but too much hugging for last year. And obviously in lockdown when they returned.

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/05/2021 21:55

What do you do if someone wants to watch TV and someone else wants to cook in peace or have the radio on?

AlmostSummer21 · 24/05/2021 21:58

@Halsall

You'd have to have some kind of way to block out the light, wouldn't you? I don't understand people who can sleep without any window coverings!
I do. I prefer waking up to the sun coming in than in a dark room. I only like that on holiday when I don't have to get up

They gave several options fir the lads room blinds, blinds inside the glass, that electrical stuff that makes the glass go opaque.

MightNeedABiggerGlass · 24/05/2021 22:02

They were a lovely couple and they got a huge amount done for the money.

It was too white and shiny for me, I would've left the sitting room separate. I also didn't like accessing the downstairs loo through the utility.

But they clearly loved it, I liked the architect, really unassuming but very clever ideas.

AlmostSummer21 · 24/05/2021 22:03

I'd like to go back unannounced in a year and see what they look like then!

PiuVinoPerFavore · 24/05/2021 22:05

The sitting room abs the living/kitchen area having no wall between was a bad idea. No quiet separate space in the house at all.

ImAncient · 24/05/2021 22:12

Exactly what I said. But I loved the new guy. I’m not sorry to see bench architect gone. I liked how both architects were with each other. Robert was always condescending imo. Looks like different architects next week which I’ll find interesting. So glad to see this back.

I would at least put doors in the opening. They've always got that option or they can brick it back up again if they find it doesn't work.
covetingthepreciousthings · 24/05/2021 22:55

They seemed a lovely couple and very happy with the end result..

If it were me, I think I'd have rather had one living room downstairs with a closed off option, and then an extra living space upstairs instead of the raised ceiling empty space & then have a bigger kitchen / dining area. I was surprised that for all they did the kitchen space wasn't actually that increased - it looked it but the work surface either side of the cooker looked tiny so then you'd only really have the bar area to use as work surface. The dining table looked a bit cramped as well but maybe that was the filming angles.

There seemed to be a lot more filler on this episode than previous ones?

I actually miss Robert the bench seating man Grin I may be in the minority though!

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 24/05/2021 23:00

I didn't like the end result. Too open, too many white shiny surfaces and not enough kitchen worktop space. I like a big kitchen/diner with a separate living room. But they were a lovely couple and it looks like they love it so I suppose that is all that matters.

There types of programs never do enough revisiting episodes. I want to see it in 5/10 years time.

LadyEloise · 24/05/2021 23:24

I loved the design they chose.
The lights over the counter were gorgeous.
I'd have put pocket doors into the opening so the front room could be closed off.

ElephantOfRisk · 24/05/2021 23:35

I liked the design but not necessarily their decor, I like colour. In the end I don't think they have much more work surface in the kitchen than they had before as actually if they'd just bloody tidied it there would have been plenty. The boy's bedroom needed sorted out though, i must have missed what happened to their old bathroom? It that now the ensuite/built in wardrobe?

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/05/2021 07:45

I always wonder with shows like this if the contestants 'tidy' the house and then the producers come and are like 'nooo it's too tidy, quick chuck two kettles there and a tv'
The rest of the house before looked quite neat and tidy really so was surprised the kitchen had so much stuff in it.

jay55 · 25/05/2021 14:23

Just watching on catch up.
Loved both designs, not sure either was entirely practical but the lack of bench seating was such a joy.

I loved that the house was cluttered during the before, it felt real. And they were such a lovely couple. I did wonder if they also applied for love it or list it Grin

Didn't like the door opening straight into the house, such a heat loss in winter(whatever they say about thermal efficiency). But did love the extra light and feeling of space.
Agree with above, would have kept the separate room downstairs.

WhatHaveIFound · 25/05/2021 14:42

OMG the kitchen before they had the work done. There were packaging boxes and an extension lead on the kitchen worktop that could have been put in the garage to clear a bit of space. How can they cook like that or was it just done for the show?

Loved the design they chose but I would have gone for a wood floor and kept the living room closed off. Also too much black & white and shiny surfaces for me.

I'm not missing the bench seating!

RaspberryCoulis · 25/05/2021 14:44

Not surprised they ditched Beardy Bench Seating and Bath in the Kitchen Robert.

I think he won one out of the whole last series and it became the Laura show. Better to show a range of more reasonable choices. Last night's was two very liveable options which were hard to choose between, not once decent option and one wtf option.

jay55 · 25/05/2021 15:12

I did think the white stairs with a pair of teens in the house were wildly optimistic.

ElephantOfRisk · 25/05/2021 15:24

Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not saying the kitchen shouldn't look lived in, I just think i wouldn't be on tv moaning about lack of prep space when there were tons of worktops covered in stuff that didn't need to be there....and then to replace the kitchen with another that also didn't have a lot of prep space - albeit far nicer and a better layout.

I have a kitchen with very little prep space so against my cluttery tendencies, I keep it neat so what I have can be used.

I think they might the right choice and i can see that they had to compromise the design a bit as they couldn't build out to the side as much as they wanted. Both designs were very liveable though.

Also found the mirror clad support beam a bit odd.
