Anyone going to watch?
I started another thread a few weeks ago but I've lost it Confused

I thought he was tremendously magnanimous wishing her luck with such enthusiasm and sincerity I agree; so gracious of him. I was impressed.

My standout is Sophie. Her Crown work was so intelligent and well-informed, and I love her own make-up in the 'talking about themselves' sections.

I loved Samah's; great to see her break away from the 'beautifying' mindset of her being a beauty-counter MUA. It was rather touching to see how liberating she found it.

The Crown challenge was absolutely fascinating; the process and thinking behind 'just' screen make-up, how much it adds to character and story. I liked the Crown head make-up person too. Jane someone? I can't remember. She made such insightful comments, not just on her own challenge but when she judged the other one too.

ScienceSensibility · 06/05/2021 13:46

@SchadenfreudePersonified

That Liverpool MUA is awful, how has she survived so long?

She really is grim, isn't she?

Cocks up every challenge and just whines "This isn't me - I'm really so much better - I've gorra pull something out of the hat and show them I can do this" and never does.

That made me laugh! Channelling Cilla Black with that “gorra” 😀
Arrierttyclock · 06/05/2021 17:02

I'm on the face off now but I know who goes because of the previews they show I know Alex is safe even tho she's terrible!! Agreed the standard is lower than other years! Love Sophie she's brilliant. I love Maya hosting it!

Cocolapew · 06/05/2021 17:05

I think Dolli may have peaked in week one, nothing else has been any good. She might be a one trick pony.
Jeez Louise those blue eyes Shock they both should have went.
Val and Dom made me laugh this week, they were like Waldorf and Statler from the Muppets during the studio challenge.
I really like Sophie.
Maya is a bit fond of herself isn't she?

OP posts:
IntermittentParps · 06/05/2021 17:41

I agree, I was excited about Dolli at first but she hasn't been any good since Week One.
Val is really making me laugh. And just as she said 'I'd kill for a burger and chips' I was thinking the exact same thing!

mimirouge · 06/05/2021 19:35

Also, often when the guest judges come on, they tend to look relatively normal (low key make up themselves if they are women) and maybe a bit more outlandish if male. The contestants however are sporting some odd looks.

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 09/05/2021 15:39

I was just reading though this and wondering why everyone was going on a our Xavi didn't go until I realised I've not properly caught up 🙄

Though I'll still watch, just to see these awful blue smokey eyes 😄

Also agree there's less obvious talent this year. Or at least there's been no "wow" moment yet.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 09/05/2021 22:22

Love Glow Up.

This year's contestants are ok but not outstanding. The two who were in the face off last week should both have gone home. Those eyes were awful.

WouldBeGood · 09/05/2021 22:42

The challenges haven’t been such fun either, I don’t think

HeadNorth · 10/05/2021 06:20

I thought the Pose challenge was great fun - I'm loving this series. The scouse make-up artist may not be the most accomplished, but she does have a compelling personality.

Another underwhelming week. I'm wondering if they've chosen the participants based on personality rather than talent? I've watched since season 1 and the standard has dropped which is a real shame. I love watching people who are good at what they do, its the best thing about these competitive shows, we don't need all the 'characters'.

Dummer · 11/05/2021 23:55

I agree. I enjoyed tonights but it wasn’t anything wow. I’m personally not into the tiktok thing so the challenge didn’t appeal that way and then I didn’t think any were that “wow” videos anyway but I’m not sure if it’s because I’m unfamiliar with that type of concept. They all looked pretty dull really.

In studio with filter being a concept arrgg. Some good ideas eg the pixelated face idea but just not the skill to see it through properly. The cotton bud mushrooms really grossed me out so I suppose that worked if that was the aim. I though Sophie’s was amazing make-up and wasn’t sure why judges said it wasn’t a filter. Surely a filter is anything a person wants. I’ve missed something!

The challenge tasks - does every MUA have to know all these random trends? A pop art lip seemed quite random for them to know about no? I do think the right person out the pair went home but she was lovely so it’s a pity she’s out now too.

I so agree.

I love watching the skills on display, just don’t need the ‘characters’ to appreciate that.

I’m pleased with the judges’ choice this week.

FakeTanandProsecco · 12/05/2021 07:11

@Dummer I was wondering the same about the challenge tasks, what happens if they ask them to do something they've not heard of?

This season is very underwhelming so far. Hope it gets better!

IntermittentParps · 12/05/2021 09:54

I just felt a bit old for this episode Grin I do not get TikTok and filters etc.
On Sophie’s filter, they said that filters are generally used for an 'escape' and hers was a bit too serious from that point of view. It's a good point, but I admired Sophie for thinking about it differently. And they were very clear that they thought her make-up was very well done.

WouldBeGood · 12/05/2021 10:06

I think I’m just too old for all of it!

Previously I was impressed with skills and leaned things, but this series is not for me.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 12/05/2021 10:09

I'd like to see Sophie win, she's very talented and could have a long career.

IntermittentParps · 12/05/2021 10:39

Yes, Sophie's excellent, really technically good and very original in her thinking. I liked Alex as a personality but she was lacking in self-discipline and was the right person to go. Craig was good in this ep –his video concept was great, I thought, really cleverly done. Dolli continues to blow hot and cold but I like her. I don't like Jack; perhaps unfairly, I feel that they have a bit of a high opinion of themselves. I like how Samah is slowly expanding her vision and moving away from doing just 'beauty' looks and getting more creative.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/05/2021 10:47

Thank heaven's Alex left!

This isn't as talented a bunch in general and she has been absolutely dreadful, and worse than that, hasn't stopped whinging about it ("I didn't give me best", "I've gorra up me game", "I've got so much more inside me", "I know I can have more confidence", "I can be so much more creative") but never does anything about it. When you see the looks she's created before coming on the show, some are stunning, but they never translate in the challenges.

Dolli has done some fabulous looks - really, really eye-catching, but she's a bit of a "one-look pony" - she can't cope with anything creative that isn't within a very narrow brief. I thought her creative look with the lips was dreadful TBH. Same with Samah - it's just variations on pretty-pretty. Can't think outside her own particular box. She's fab at what she does, but what she does is very limited.

The lad with he green hair (Jack?) has some great ideas, but then fails at the technical challenges. Craig is also hitty-missy, but I think in general better than Jack and his Marilyn Monroe look was brilliant!

Ryley's looks incorporating her birthmark were incredible, but her other work hasn't been so memorable (though I loved her outline flowers the other week).

My favourite is Sophie* - technically she seems excellent, listens to the brief and follows it, and just quietly gets on with the job. She also seems to have a more natural rapport with her models than some the others do. I have to admit, that another thing I like about her is that she's quite low-key about many things (I think she said that she was autistic); so when the guest judges are announced and the rest of the competitors are going "SQUeeeeeeeeEEEEeeeee!" and jumping up and down and gurning like idiots, she is just looking at the with a "What?" expression. "What? So they're outstanding in their field - why does that mean you are shrieking like a banshee?" I just find her response very refreshing. And she knows exactly what she wants from the show - and I hope she gets it even if she doesn't win. I hope that someone out there is watching and thinking "She's good - we could use someone like her in our team",

*Praying that I haven't jinxed her.

The cartoon lip challenge was Confused. Another week where both should have gone, I think. Samah can't stay much longer, surely.

jay55 · 12/05/2021 14:23

Am also feeling old. The challenge was poor. It wasn't clear if it was meant to be instructional or surprise and ended up somewhere bEtween for all of them. Again they are limited by their own features, but also their self confidence when they have to be personalities in the challenge and not just MUAs.

Dolli can't do two good looks in a row.

Alex was far, far less skilled than she thought she was. Though if you put her ideas and Samah's technique together they might have had a half good look between them.

I also like Sophie the most so far, she has shown quite a range.

They're all up and down though and again the exit challenge was poorly done by both.

DinoRules · 12/05/2021 14:40

I feel same really. Too much focus on “characters” not enough on talent. Love Sophie. Think she’s just calm collected and gets on with it and produces amazing work (even if it wasn’t quite in line with what a filter should be).

Cocolapew · 12/05/2021 19:07

I love Sophie, I also love her low key reactions, makes me laugh.
Those videos were cringey, though Tik Tok bemuses me. DD has a very short video on it showing her using just concealer rather than foundation and 60,00 people have watched it Hmm
I'm glad Alex went, her eyebrows made me weep and she wasn't actually very good, even though she had so much more to show us.
The mushroom thingy face made me boke, I hate things like that or holes.
Also I though Dolli was a Dalmatian Confused

OP posts:
SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/05/2021 20:19

I also really really cringed at the mushroom face . . . and to me it was pretty obvious that real mushrooms would never stick on. Surely he would have had a try first? (Though the cotton bud substitute was inspired if you wanted to do something like that.)

Cocolapew · 12/05/2021 20:22

Also they must have been shown the pop art lip?
