Crime Drama starring Kate Winslet

9pm Monday 19th April Sky Atlantic

I'm so looking forward to another dark drama.

We do not trust Frank here, because the actor played Roy (Pam's fiancé) in the American Office.

AmbientLighting · 03/05/2021 12:30

I plan to watch this once I've binged caught up on Greys Anatomy

Giay · 03/05/2021 12:35

Liked this a lot. Kate Winslet is brilliant so far.

Yes to Happy Valley and Top of the Lake vibes, also a bit Twin Peaksy (without the talking backwards stuff obvs Grin)

There's a lot of DUI going on!

RedHotChiliChips · 03/05/2021 20:32

I thought Richard's behaviour at the book signing was a red flag. He had invited Mare there as his date if I understood right? But then made her wait whilst he was talking to all those women. If he was really into her, he would have just excused himself and gone to her.

LunaNorth · 03/05/2021 22:06

Oh, Mare! Shock

Etsylicious · 03/05/2021 22:19

Night-mare! 😬

franfolly · 03/05/2021 22:25

She's a terrible police officer😂

Clawdy · 03/05/2021 22:26

I loved the acting of the county detective in the bar scene, so difficult to play a convincing drunk, but he was brilliant.

That’s exactly what DH and I said.

The hour passed so quick!

Etsylicious · 04/05/2021 06:19

Third the drunk detective - he was SO good in that scene.

thecognoscenti · 04/05/2021 06:46

I love it, I think it's superb. Such a good observation about the similarities with Happy Valley - can't be a coincidence, surely? But I thought Happy Valley was a masterpiece as well so I'm delighted to have found it.

Nospringchickendipper · 04/05/2021 09:12

I knew she was going to do that I was shouting at the tv.
It didn’t seem the best move to make.

banivani · 04/05/2021 18:17

Placemarking to join in - am loving this series.

southeastdweller · 04/05/2021 19:15

I didn't buy Mare planting the heroin on Carrie, it seemed a bit out of character.

BaconAndAvocado · 04/05/2021 19:39

Another fab episode.
Creepy turn with the priest now in the picture.

banivani · 05/05/2021 08:25

Right I have a theory. I think the setup is very classical whodunnit in the sense that the first episode introduced all the people who can be suspected. My husband rewatched it last night to test this and the deacon is named, but no more, but that's enough for me.

I agree that Guy Pierce is a bit off as a character, but it might be that as a character his function is to "open Mare up again" and serve as a sounding board so we learn more about the history (just like that doctor did). So as a murderer he's a red herring, but OTOH we have just learned about the paternity and he's a serial shagger.

The deacon is so obvious I'm inclined to not like him as a suspect. I'm wondering if it's the cousin instead (the priest) and the deacon is agonising over this suspicion. If Erin confessed to him he might feel bound by secrecy (I'm feeling a little hazy on what his rôle is in the Church and if he can take confession though, but he might feel morally bound). Our minds have immediately gone to "sexual predator" but his previous indiscretion could have been an affair with a married woman for example.

Your man playing the drunk was bloody brilliant. The dialogue was fantastic too, combined with his delivery it was spot on. Best drunk scene ever.

I'm very disappointed with Mare planting the drugs. It led to a really good scene with her and her boss, clearly the only person in the world she respects (did anyone say replacement father figure?).

Nospringchickendipper · 05/05/2021 09:30

I’m wondering if it’s going to be linked to the other girl who has gone missing.
Interesting to see what happens in nexts weeks episode as Mare is no longer on the case

Giay · 05/05/2021 09:37

I don't have any theories yet, but it's really very good (and I'm usually on these threads complaining Grin

Drunk Zabel was brilliant, and I quite like the fact that they shut down the drug planting so quickly (we didn't even see it) and didn't go down that anxiety route of seeing a character do something monumentally stupid and then go through hoops trying to conceal what they've done. Nope, did the stupid thing, got caught immediately Grin

banivani · 05/05/2021 10:12

Agree @Giay that it was great that she was caught directly, no bullshit like. She's been doing dodgy things all the time after all so the chief might have had an eye on her too.

RedHotChiliChips · 05/05/2021 12:28

I love the chief. He has a great authority about him and big charisma.

oneglassandpuzzled · 05/05/2021 12:33

Kate W is just mesmerising. But everyone in it is good.

Silly woman planting the drugs. I was groaning.

SydneyCarton · 05/05/2021 13:14

banivani I wondered about the priest cousin as well - Mare has an ex-husband, mother and daughter to show conflicted family relationships, so why give her a cousin as well? Is his function to be the killer.

We know the deacon disposed of Erin's bike, but he could have found it hidden at the church/vicarage by Cousin Priest (I'm sure that's not the right word, but I'm assuming they both live together in a house provided by the church) and got rid of it to protect him.

banivani · 05/05/2021 18:32

It could really go either way, it could be a very complicated plot or a real obvious one with Mare's character growth being the actual point of the story (I'm hoping for both).

YoutubeZoom · 06/05/2021 11:23

It doesn't normally bother me, but what happened to Zabel's accent? Why was it wondering? Was it meant to be a drunken joke?

banivani · 06/05/2021 17:46

Didn't notice the accent. What do you mean? (so I don't have to look myself Wink)
