Crime Drama starring Kate Winslet

9pm Monday 19th April Sky Atlantic

I'm so looking forward to another dark drama.

OP posts:

I need to go back and watch, but wasn't Billy convinced to take the rap to protect Ryan? I don't think Billy thought that he, Billy, had killed Erin.

YoutubeZoom · 01/06/2021 16:07

How old was Erin when DJ was born? Would John not serve time for statutory rape?

mommybunny · 01/06/2021 16:25

Kenny is not DJ’s closest blood relation - John is. Kenny will probably spend longer in prison than John will because Kenny actually attempted murder, while John just covered one up.

I’m also wondering how John manipulated Billy into confessing to the crime, why Billy got into the truck with John knowing John had a gun and why he EVER turned his back on John at the river, unless Billy was so drunk the night Erin was killed John was able to persuade him he’d actually done it.

rookiemere · 01/06/2021 16:29

I thought it was amazing. My only minor niggle was at the ending - when presumably some time had passed - Kate Winslet's roots were the same length they'd been earlier. More believable if she'd had it recoloured.

Sorry that was really bugging me for some reason Blush.

mommybunny · 01/06/2021 16:48

I agree rookie - time had passed but neither Kate’s hair nor any of the children had grown.

Cocolapew · 01/06/2021 16:51

That annoyed me too Grin

I thought that Billy assumed that John was the killer, and thought that John was going to kill him(Billy) to shift the blame onto him. Billy was accepting of this fate, as the screw up of the family.
SenecaFallsRedux · 01/06/2021 20:28

I'm not sure @Deadringer. Now I can't remember what I have gleaned from watching and what I have read in reviews and commentary. I plan to binge watch the whole series over two days hopefully this weekend so I can pick up on things that I know I have missed.

BlueButtercups · 01/06/2021 21:35

Billy (extremely drunk) helped John move undress and dispose of Erins body.

Billy was silenced by fear and loyalty and being a sort of loner, and I think he knew people would suspect him before John or anyone else.

Billy knew John was DJ's father.

I THINK 🤔😂

in my mind anyhooo

Kona84 · 01/06/2021 21:50

Good twist at the end I honestly didn’t see it coming. We should have clicked earlier when he beat up the kid for picking on his sister- that he would do anything for his family.

But I was a bit confused too as to why Lori got to keep DJ.

Nospringchickendipper · 01/06/2021 23:29

It was such a good series that I hope they leave it there. I remember Broadchurch which was spoiled by the second series.

that second series was soooo weird right 🤔

rookiemere · 02/06/2021 07:17

Yes I'm torn between wanting more and feeling they'll spoil the perfection with another series. I think what worked for me was that the murder mystery was as central to the plot as the relationships. It would be hard to replicate that intensity second time round.

SydneyCarton · 02/06/2021 11:43

Nospringchickendipper The last episode reminded me a lot of the last episode of Broadchurch S1, where the killer was revealed in the first 5-10 minutes and the rest of the hour showed the fallout with family and the community

Nospringchickendipper · 02/06/2021 12:36

I’m glad I was able to watch it week to week without finding out any spoilers.
It would be interesting to see if you watched it again would you have realised it was Ryan.

banivani · 02/06/2021 13:21

I absolutely don't want a sequel, I love these contained stories. Like reading a novel. Sequels are always disappointing.

ShallWeStartTheMeeting · 02/06/2021 18:47

I agree. It was a perfectly told story, with enough closure for the main characters to satisfy anyone.

RevolvingPivot · 03/06/2021 15:13

Poor Erin. Abused by the closest people around her!!!

Pemba · 07/06/2021 17:07

Yes poor Erin, what a life she had!

Just watched the last one, very good series. Early on in the last ep. I started suspecting Lori, and after a while twigged it must be young Ryan. Poor kid really, with the crappy US justice system, he doesn't stand much of a chance. He didn't mean to kill Erin, but that's his life ruined. I think if I was Mare I might have let John his dad take the rap!

I agree that it seems doubtful Social Services would have let Lori keep baby DJ. She seemed very disconnected from him (understandably) and Erin loved him so much, poor girl and poor baby.

I also really didn't understand why a teenage girl like Erin would have had any interest in beardy, dull middle-aged John (even apart from him being her dad's cousin which is a bit taboo, and more so in the US than here, I understand). Anybody have any thoughts on that?

I suppose the taboo thing, plus seeing him as a father figure since her own dad was at worst abusive and at best disinterested or still grieving for her mum. Plus John's a family member so he knows and understands all the stresses in her life, she doesn't have to explain it all to him. She was desperate for some love and affection and I think quite vulnerable and naïve

Pemba · 08/06/2021 16:38

Yes I see what you mean about her being starved of affection etc, poor lass. But to make her choice a bit more credible I think they would have done well to cast an actor who was more handsome though, plus slimmer and less beardy! (More like Guy Pearce say although a bit younger.) Can't see why this character was supposed to be having females falling for him all over!

Another thing I didn't get was what was the unpleasant Dylan actually up to? With his little gang, the burning of Erin's diaries etc.? I must have missed something. Will Mare be charging him with a crime?

Dylan burned the diaries as they may have stated who the father of DJ was. His parents loved DJ, so he didn't want people to find out who DJ's father was so his parents could keep him.
KillingMeDeftly · 08/06/2021 20:18

Poor DJ would've been better off with Dylan's parents anyway.

BentBastard · 10/06/2021 08:54

Just finished this. Cried my eyes out.

Unpopular opinion on this thread by the looks of it but I was with Lori in that car scene. Mare could have just left it and let John take the rap. Police principles/justice/getting the right culprit reasons sound hollow nonsenses from someone willing to frame her grandsons mother with heroin in order to keep custody of her grandson (for which she never seemed remorseful, only sorry she got caught).

queenjaneappro · 10/06/2021 11:10

@BentBastard Totally agree!
