@Billandben444

Don't think Sunni will head up the new series - wonder who they'll bring in?

Why didn't any of them have guests at the passing-out parade? Ha ha, another loose end.
Dean - cos he was estranged from his family?, Ram - cos his family disapproved?, Fiona - why wasn't at least her dad there?, Liz - hiding the fact she was gay perhaps?
Didn't any of them have any run-of-the-mill friends though?

Wasn't there a comment that that was precisely why they were a group, i.e. they were all people who basically had no-one else taking an interest so they gravitated towards each other?
Nith · 30/03/2021 23:07

I like the idea of Anna Maxwell Martin as replacement, she was so good in Line of Duty.

I'm really glad it's coming back. One of the series strengths has been the team that worked with Cassie - they give you the sense of being a real team that cared about what they did, partly out of loyalty to her and Sunny.

MissBarbary · 30/03/2021 23:15

@colouringindoors

I don't like any of the "big" names suggested that I've seen. All too flashy.
I agree. Keeley Hawes and Suranne Jones are wonderful but they would swamp it.
Druidlookingidiot · 30/03/2021 23:43

Anna Maxwell Martin ✔️

OysterMonkey · 31/03/2021 00:03

Yes, I’d like Anna Maxwell Martin too.
She’s got that unassuming but believable persona that works for Unforgotten.
And I can see her working well with Sunny.
How can we arrange a transfer for her from AC3?!

LabbyNoona · 31/03/2021 00:08

Placemarking!

SisterMichael · 31/03/2021 00:55

I watched on catchup and it mentioned the “tragic accident” or something in the blurb so I knew she was going to die - thanks ITV! Still cried like a baby though.

Why do people call John sexy Laird?

Liz felt quite ruthless to me, I’m surprised she didn’t call an ambulance/the police and get her and Fiona out of there. Were they such good friends that she would agree to cover it up?

AnotherSunrise · 31/03/2021 01:00

Another vote for Anna maxwell Martin

He played the main character in the tv series ‘Monarch of the Glen’. Lots of babies were named Archie at the time after him.

Well I felt quite depressed after watching it last night and haven’t been able to get it out of my head. We only discovered Unforgotten a couple of weeks ago, serious binge watch! I’m glad I’ve read this thread because all the annoying mistakes that have been punted out have cheered me up. The body chopping and drugs!? I am sad for Archie though, just got a bit of a comeback and now his raisin d’etre has been deaded. I seem to remember he was pretty boring in his Laird days too.
I think Sunni should be the boss with the blonde girl as his assistant, both lovely understated actors. Anna MM would be Cassie 2 and too oddly similar - I thought they were the same actor for ages. Morse turned into Lewis, so I’m sure it can work with Sunni - they don’t even need to change the title for this!

Billandben444 · 31/03/2021 07:15

Or Florence Pugh? Too big a name would swamp the series. Cassie was checking her phone to see if her Dad had replied and we knew she was stressed and exhausted so I think the random twocker was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He said 'she came from nowhere' so she was partly/wholly responsible for her own death. It was a tragedy in the true Shakespearian meaning of the word. (Please not Suranne Jones or Keely Hawkes!). Oh, and I bawled my eyes out.

Tiktokersmiracle · 31/03/2021 07:28

Yes not a known actor, I would rather a relative newcomer.
I hope they don't get someone like Suranne or Keeley in, or Anna Friel (or someone else whose face doesn't move) as a "look who we've got" bit of advertising.

The thing I've always liked about Unforgotten is how calm and understated it is. No one shouts or screams or has huge noisy car chases. It's always been about Cass and Sunni, quietly and methodically working out the answers. Which was why it was so believable that Cass would be so angry and disappointed in herself over leaving the case file in public and the death of Neil Morrissey's character as a result.

It's never been flashy of sensationalist or with daft cameos from famous types. You'll know some of the actors from other things but I've always felt it was cast on ability of actor not showing off about cameos like Midsommer murders or the likes.

CherryValanc · 31/03/2021 08:00

Whoever replaces her I'd like her (we presume the replacement will be a woman?) to be older rather than younger - at v least in her 40s.. also preferable an actress who's not bowed to the pressure of having to maintain being young. If that makes sense.

I like Sarah Lancashire she fits in my category I feel. Anna Maxwell Martin too- but I agree she's very similar to Nicola Walker in characteristic.

I wonder what sort of relationship they'll create between newbie and Sunny. One of the attractions was Cassie's and Sunny's close friendship.

PhillipPhillop · 31/03/2021 08:20

Yes I was thinking of Sarah Lancashire and also Sandra Oh who's older and could play the intense wanting justice for the victims character like NW.

Sittinonthesand · 31/03/2021 08:30

Not Sandra! She’s a great actress but it was the quiet sensibleness of Cassie and Sunni that was so good - and the large involved team. The methodical briefings and calm discussions - the delegation and team work. Not just the awkward duo we normally get in dramas.

CherryValanc · 31/03/2021 08:36

Speaking of Line of Duty transfers I had a look at that cast list. Andi Osho would be good (admittedly not a very good transfer as she's in fact dead in Line of Duty)

Clawdy · 31/03/2021 09:27

Nobody can really replace Nicola, but I hope it's not going to be a famous face, I saw Suranne Jones mentioned in a news report as top favourite. That would be so wrong.

KittyMcKitty · 31/03/2021 09:31

I’m pleased (I think) it’s continuing as I love Sunny / Sanjeev. My preference would be for Sunny to be promoted to Cassies role and Fran promoted to Sunny’s.

Billandben444 · 31/03/2021 09:48

It needs to be someone who is not a big star or it will be all about them and nobody could ever say that about NW!

SisterMichael · 31/03/2021 10:08

Thanks standrews! I’ve never seen it.

Someone like Lesley Sharp might work. She was in Scott & Bailey with Suranne but quieter and more level-headed. She might not be a big enough name though.

Halsall · 31/03/2021 10:36

I’d find it really hard to keep the faith if they cast Jodie Whittaker.

The problem with the lovely Sunny is that he’s a natural ‘second in command’ - while quietly getting on with stuff, he’s very self-effacing and a level-headed personality. Cassie was the one with more of a mercurial temperament and that’s why they worked so well together. Sadly I actually don’t think Sunny would be the obvious choice to lead the team (plus, there are more dramatic possibilities to be explored if a new person is brought in over his head).

PS re John - can’t see it myself. Something weird about his mouth Hmm

oneglassandpuzzled · 31/03/2021 11:02

I loved the depiction of a close relationship between a man and woman that was a friendship based on respect for one another. Very moving.

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 31/03/2021 11:03

Exactly so. I don't see how any writer would not want to draw the logical conclusion from Ram's painful history - Sunny is certain to be passed over for promotion.

His disappointment at having someone new placed above him would be easy material upon which to build tension and drama in a new series.

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 31/03/2021 11:06

Also, he's getting married, and he has teen (ish?) daughters. They're bound to have opinions on police ethics - which might be another source of friction with a new boss.

StanfordPines · 31/03/2021 11:12

I’ve got a question.

This team solve murders committed in the distant past, they are like a cold case team but the cases are actually new.
But, how often do cases like this come up, and what do the team do when they don’t have a case to work on?
