I discovered it today and I can’t stop.

I know it’s drivel but it’s beyond fun and exactly what I needed.

Yes love it Grin

If you search for Queen Charlotte there are articles done where historians believe she was of African decent. Paintings of her and quotes about her show her to have features associated with darker skin.

diddl · 24/01/2021 17:13
@diddl - Queen Charlotte is long rumoured to be the first black member of the royal family.
Ah, Ok.

Just had a quick google & she was about 15 generations away from the ancestor who may or may not have been black.

So would that have lead to others being able to take their place in society?

Or was that just in Shondaland?

PrinzessinCressida · 24/01/2021 18:09

I read somewhere that the production company did not want to use the term "colour-blind casting" because of, I think, precisely that scene.

PrinzessinCressida · 24/01/2021 18:11

I agree it's either one or the other but like someone else said I didn't linger on anything remotely thought-provoking because, the Duke Shock

So they want to give the idea that the Regency ton really were so diverse?
PrinzessinCressida · 24/01/2021 20:26

@diddl I dont know for sure, of course, but I can't imagine that they are trying to pretend that Regency society was diverse, because we all know it wasn't. Perhaps trying to suggest a fictional, alternative version?

diddl · 24/01/2021 20:39

"Perhaps trying to suggest a fictional, alternative version?"

I suppose I feel that that was represented well enough by the cast!

Well as you say-it's fiction!

Just finished watching the whole series.

One question....Daphne's mother seemed to have a slightly French accent? Or did I imagine this?

WhatIsAWeekday · 28/01/2021 15:39

Did anyone notice that the seamstress (forgotten her name) played Meghan Markle in The Windsors?

Didn't notice- but if she was supposws French then i imagine she'd have clock the dodgy French accent on the dressmaker (also can't recall her name)

Omg hadn't realised but of course now you mentioned it.

Finished watching it on Monday? Looking forward to season 2 already

Delatron · 01/02/2021 22:42

I thought Daphne’s mother definitely had a slight French accent too.

As a teen after ploughing through Georgette Heyer I remember reading some Marion Chesney which were similar but I think had more heaving bosoms and terrible rakes holding themselves back from the young lady they had uncharacteristically fallen in love with. Just googled her and she also wrote Agatha Raisin and Hamish McBeth - talented lady!
I loved Bridgerton (just watched it) and all the references to promenading, being ruined, dance cards etc. I'm sure I remember dancing with the same man twice was as good as declaring your intentions, and the waltz was scandalous at the start.

TerryWoganFanGirl · 13/02/2021 19:21

I loved Marion Chesney as a teen too. A few years ago The Book People reprinted some of her sets of books and I enjoyed rereading. Pretty staid compared to Bridgerton!

Lelophants · 20/02/2021 17:53

@TildaKauskumholm

Gave up after 10 minutes. Awful crap, seems to have been made for the less discerning US viewer.
You need to watch longer than 10 minutes! It gets good, I promise you.
ItsIgginningtolooklikelockdown · 20/02/2021 21:20

There's a lot of great telly made in the US, not sure we could say "less discerning".

Joystir59 · 08/03/2022 19:49

Just watched all 8 episodes. The Duke of Hastings is gorgeous.
