I discovered it today and I can’t stop.

I know it’s drivel but it’s beyond fun and exactly what I needed.

I’ve never read Heyer do I need to?

crumpet · 27/12/2020 22:05

The slang tries to reach Georgette Heyer but misses more times than it hits - totally anachronistic, but good fun and perfect for Christmas mindless viewing

Aberforthsgoat · 27/12/2020 23:21

Just watched episode 4 and I am SWOONING

Merryoldgoat · 27/12/2020 23:28

I love you all!

I’m going to have to try to books - I love a bit of period trash.

I found out today that the main girl (Daphne) her mum in real life is sally webster from Corrie! And now I can’t unsee the resemblance!

Aberforthsgoat · 28/12/2020 00:29

@AlohaLola I KNEW she reminded me of someone!

Kerberos · 28/12/2020 00:37

It's amazingly awful. I am totally hooked :)

TottiePlantagenet · 28/12/2020 00:37

@Maudythebudgie if you turn on the subtitles then it comes up with the music.

Bridgerton is utter tosh but highly watchable. I saw that it was Shonda Rhimes, know her from Greys Anatomy, so of course it's light and highly entertaining!

Slowly working my way through How To Get Away With Murder, also from the great Shonda (also not suitable for a 9 yr old due to all the bonking!)

Kerberos · 28/12/2020 00:40

My daughter just came in (15 - thankfully not at a part that would embarrass us both!) and pointed out the dance music was from Billy Eilish played on violin.

Maudythebudgie · 28/12/2020 00:43

Thank you @TottiePlantagenet!

Needhelp101 · 28/12/2020 02:40

I got the Billy Eilish tune! #notsuchanoldfart

I too am rationing! It's so enjoyable.

Pyewhacket · 28/12/2020 02:43

No. It looks dreadful.

Kerberos · 28/12/2020 03:45

It really is. But I'm still watching...

rubabayaga · 28/12/2020 03:55

Aaagh, I really enjoyed it. Massive Jane Austen fan too... thb every bit of the duke and wotshernames dialogue had to be fast-forwarded to enable me to still like this ( relationship chat circa 1700 is as dull as it is in 2020! Who knew? ) but such fun it was...

Omg! The resemblance is uncanny now you’ve pointed it out!

I love a bit of rubbish viewing but this utterly defeated me after about 15 minutes. A shame, because the costumes were fantastic, but it was so dull. It's like someone said 'let's turn the stupid dial up to 11'.

BarryGlendenning · 28/12/2020 14:51

@Merryoldgoat

Happy to wear the mantle of ‘less discerning viewer’ 👍🏽

It was tosh. Fucking loved it.

It’s worth watching for Lord Hastings alone frankly.

@Merryoldgoat 😂
Merryoldgoat · 28/12/2020 14:57

@BarryGlendenning

True story.

I binge watched over 2 days, absolute filth but I loved it. The library scene will be my fantasy forever, as will the Duke of Hastings

BooksAreNotEssentialInWales · 28/12/2020 19:59

I stayed awake until 4 in the morning just for the dresses and the Duke!

tribpot · 28/12/2020 20:10

God I hope @citycitycity got the message not to watch this with a nine year old. It was an absolute fuckfest (both of swearing and shagging). Poor Daphne would have had raging cystitis within a couple of days of her honeymoon starting, I wonder if they had cranberry juice in those days.

I had the same problem of telling the brothers apart, similar to in Downton where all the men seemed to be tall dark posh boys - but at least these three were meant to look similar. Slightly bemused by one sister seemed to appear from nowhere in the last episode. 'Hi, I haven't been mentioned at all and now I have arrived for no apparent purpose in the season finale'.

Jane Austen it certainly is not, but then again it is depicting a very different class from the one Austen moved in. The insane costumes were reminiscent of the kind of things Miss Bingley and her sister wore in P&P, to show they were from the ton and not middle class country bumpkins.

I thought it was a shame Marina was such a tedious character - whilst it was obvs v unusual for a Regency show to have so many people of colour, they could have done more with her given she started off being apparently such a rival to Daphne.

OverByYer · 28/12/2020 20:57

Yes, what was the point of Francesca? I had to google to check I hadn’t missed anything

FlyingByTheSeatof · 28/12/2020 22:43

What an addictive show. I loved it. And I'm delighted it's based on a book and that there is a series of them so more seasons for us to watch in the future.
I thought it was very well cast and having a teen DD I loved the fact that there were lots of normal smaller bosoms on show for a change.
And god that man is handsome the Duke of Hastings.
I cant wait for more to binge watch. I hope they embellish upon the books and create more episodes each season.

Aberforthsgoat · 28/12/2020 23:19

Is there going to be a second series? Anyone know when? Asking for a friend, obvs Grin

Destinysdaughter · 28/12/2020 23:48

I absolutely adored the necklaces too, hope it results into beautiful jewellry like that coming back into fashion!
