It’s on tonight (23rd) and I’m really looking forward to watching it. We need all the laughs that we can get. Not sure what the storyline is but I saw it advertised.

Julia's mum finally redeemed herself with the Christmas dinner prep after years of dodging granny duties.

Weetabix and cashmere towel conversation got me 🤣

SoupDragon · 24/12/2020 07:46

I really hope there is another on the way!

Google implies that series 3 is in the way. Whether the timing has been affected by this year I don't know.

I liked that this was Covid free.

midnightstar66 · 24/12/2020 07:56

@Sparkesy season 2 is available on Amazon prime. Costs £6.99 but possibly worth it if you will rewatch

mnahmnah · 24/12/2020 07:57

@SoupDragon

I agree. So nice to watch it as if covid hasn’t happened. A bit of an escape from the shitty reality!!

Difford · 24/12/2020 07:58

Meg not wanting to leave the party 'I can't go home sober!' had me and DH crying with laughter.

jillypill · 24/12/2020 08:12

I'd loved it, it's such a good show.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 24/12/2020 08:24

I think the only reason we like Julia is that we all see a lot of us in her, and if we acknowledge that she’s actually a total bitch then we can’t pretend we are all lovely people...

CaveMum · 24/12/2020 08:52

I think the reason people mention Graham Linehan is because he was a writer for Series 1, though he’s no longer credited for Series 2 (or the Special).

Interestingly for the Christmas Special Helen Linehan has reverted to her maiden name of Serafinowicz.

I noticed that too.

crankysaurus · 24/12/2020 09:33

Thank you for starting the thread, I hadn't realised there was a Christmas special!

"That's why she had to leave Ireland" Grin

@chipshopElvis

Although who babysat for Liz?!
Liz mentioned being alone when her partner said he couldn’t make it, do I guess the kids were with their dad.

Agree! Julia says and does the things that most of us probably think but wouldn’t dream of acting on. When you look at her objectively she’s really quite unpleasant in how she speaks and behaves towards others - yet you can’t help relating to her!

Personally I thought the Christmas special was weaker than the series- but then that’s often the way when you have a really well written, funny series. The episodes in a series give a chance to build characters and dynamics. It’s a challenge to then translate those qualities into a one off special. There were some great moments (specially around Meg because her character is designed for those laugh out loud moments) but overall it didn’t hang together for me. The whole thing about painting over ‘Santa’s not real’ was too contrived and twee - definitely not in keeping with the characters apart from possibly Anne who would be horrified that any child might be disabused of the idea.

Spot on
BikeRunSki · 24/12/2020 09:44

I don’t think it matters who did all the prep instead of Julia. I think what matters is that it was done.

LizzieMacQueen · 24/12/2020 10:11

I was so sure the punchline regarding the graffiti was going to be about the apostrophe. Other than that, yes, like an evening out with mumsnetters!

Caelano · 24/12/2020 10:19

@LizzieMacQueen so did I! A missed opportunity there..would have been funnier and far more in keeping with the middle class mums if they’d gone to all the trouble to get paint to add in the missing apostrophe

PortyPiglet42 · 24/12/2020 10:25

I assumed her husband did the prep, but now you point it out probably more likely to have been her mum thinking about the characters.

I suppose I was thinking my husband would be more likely to do that than my mum if we were in a similar situation.

The mum had heard Julia rant about all she had to do when she asked her for a non crispy towel Grin so yeah, I think the mum realised she was at breaking point.

I think Julia's husband is beyond redemption. She should definitely ltb. He's useless

Definitely. Although it’s glorious that he gets even less screen time than the kids. I love that it’s hilarious and so women centric.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/12/2020 10:37

Wish they hadn’t made the kids year 6....I fear series 3 will be the last

NoGuestsCIothingOptionaI · 24/12/2020 10:44

Interestingly for the Christmas Special Helen Linehan has reverted to her maiden name of Serafinowicz
Thought they'd split up because he was obsessed with twitter (when he was on twitter) and both she and her brother Peter were fed up of being dragged into transrights vs transactivism hoo-ha?

TheOrchidKiller · 24/12/2020 11:05

I loved it. I'll miss my family this year, but the sellotape requests at inopportune moments, & crispy towel ctiticism is exactly the sort of thing they'd do.

Still laughing at the onion wrapped in tinfoil. That's my MIL down to a tee!

I can’t find any reporting to suggest they have separated?
mnahmnah · 24/12/2020 11:29

On Wikipedia it still has them as married,, be she is only referred to as her maiden name

Bluewavescrashing · 24/12/2020 11:52

Julia's DH is fit. I wouldn't ltb Wink
