Anyone watching?

OP posts:
JimmyJabs · 18/10/2020 21:21

Christ... I was already irritated by the anachronisms in the 80s sections, and then I watched episode 8. Dancing the waltz in 17th century Essex, indeed.

I appreciated what they were trying to do but the repetition in certain episodes was just boring.

SPOILERS

When exactly did Hannah die, and could Owen see her at the end?

Also, Henry Thomas is looking more and more like ET the older he gets.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 18/10/2020 21:25

I found the Viola episode quite sad as well...waiting for her daughter to come and then what happened from there on. And the whole forgetting and face fading...

SpanishFly · 18/10/2020 23:10

juneybean · 18/10/2020 23:15

Binged watched the entire thing this weekend and apart from the weird accents the thing that annoyed me the most was the constant reference to Danni as an au pair. I get she was "foreign" but au pairs do not have full time sole charge!! #angrynanny

AgentCooper · 18/10/2020 23:20

All the repetitive dream hopping stuff did my nut in, it went on far too long. I’ve just finished it and did find the ending very moving but was more than ready for it to be finished.

I found the wee boy ghost with no face extremely sad.

SpanishFly · 19/10/2020 08:13

There just wasn't enough of the wee boy ghost or Perdita in the attic etc. The creepy stuff sort of got swept aside

Ridingthegravytrain · 19/10/2020 12:53

I didn’t think it was very good at all. DH was convinced Henry was going to meet his demise when he went back, and that Dani would be in danger and then saved by her ex fiancée thereby letting go of her guilt. Would have been better imo!

AgentCooper · 19/10/2020 17:47

@Ridingthegravytrain yeah Dani’s end was pretty shit. More of less exactly what happened to the actress’s character in Hill House. Has miserable, traumatic life, finds happiness, dies.

Pebble21uk · 19/10/2020 18:00

Well it's a very well known TV trope that the lesbians are never allowed a happy ending... and one of them ususally has to die!!

Raahh · 19/10/2020 20:08

SPOILERS*

JimmyJabs I think (but with all the time shifting I lost track), Hannah died just before Dani arrived at Bly. Miles had literally just pushed her down the well, I think, as she was arriving.

Dani then 'met' ghost Hannah.

At least, i think that is what happened.

SPOILERS

WhoWants2Know · 19/10/2020 22:18

👆That's right. She had die, but since she didn't realise it, no one else did either.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that 🤣🤣🤣 Yes, I am aware it's ridiculous to nitpick at such an improbable show, but the more I think about it, the more things I find to be annoyed about.
AgentCooper · 19/10/2020 23:03

I thought Hannah might be dead early on because she never ate or drank anything but then the others seemed able to touch her, which definitely wasn’t the case with Peter and Rebecca for instance. She was absolutely beautiful, the actress playing Hannah.

WhoWants2Know · 20/10/2020 08:28

Obviously it doesn't really work like that. But for the purposes of the story-Just as Hanna died, her ghost appeared at the top of the well looking down at her body. She probably would have processed the situation and understood that she was dead, but Flora and Dani turned up at that moment and interrupted, so Hannah just kept on doing what she always had done, and didn't know she was dead.

That's why Peter (in Miles) referred to her as Wile E Coyote- she had already run off the cliff but hadn't looked down.

charliebear78 · 20/10/2020 09:09

I thought Rebecca's outfits were really elegant and stylish, probably a bit much for her role as nanny! She always looked so beautiful.
Hannah also had some good outfits.
Jamie was very pretty and I liked her character the most.

JimmyJabs · 20/10/2020 09:15

@WhoWants2Know sorry, I wasn't being pissy at you, just the scriptwriters. Yes, that does make a sort of sense. Were people actually touching her when she was dead but still there? I didn't really take notice and I don't want to have to rewatch for the purposes of checking.

charliebear78 · 20/10/2020 09:27

Hannah fell asleep on Owen when they stayed awake to keep an eye out for Peter( however wouldn't Hannah know he was dead???-all the dream hopping confused the heck out of me tbh)
I think Owen had his arm around her by the fire too-not sure about anyone else.

KatherineJaneway · 24/10/2020 07:25

I knew something was off with Hannah as she never ate or drank anything but it wasn't until the scenes with Owen that I got it.

Tiffbiff · 24/10/2020 07:58

Did anyone else see the ending coming early on?! The accent was a huge give away and 2 or 3 episodes in I said the narrator was Jamie and had said the guy at the wedding looked like Owen and bet the bride was Flora. I think due to that I was a bit disappointed as I was waiting for the amazing ending everyone promised 😢

Rollergirl11 · 24/10/2020 18:26

Yes right at the beginning I thought that the guy at the wedding was very similar to Owen. I worked out that the narrator was Jamie in episode 8 when you heard so much of the narrator’s dreadful attempt at a northern accent. And I guessed that Flora would be the bride when you were told that the children didn’t remember their time at Bly Manor and that Flora had changed her name.

I was disappointed in the last episode as well as the entire series, not a patch in Hill House!

charliebear78 · 24/10/2020 18:39

It started off well( Perfectly Splendid and accents aside)
Then about the time they introduced the back story of Peter and Rebecca and all the dream hopping nonsense, It lost me a bit.
On a side note..Anyone watched any of the Blumhouse films on Amazon??

Quirrelsotherface · 24/10/2020 20:53

Wow, one of the most bizarre things I have watched in a while. First 3 episodes fantastic, gothic, very British, really built up the spooky atmosphere. Next few episodes it just completely lost the plot, quite literally, and all the repetitive stuff. Couldn't keep up. Then the last episode was like an episode of Sunset Beach. And why on earth couldn't we have had a genuine Northern actor to play the elder Jamie, instead of Dick van Dyke?

ApplesinmyPocket · 24/10/2020 22:56

"First 3 episodes fantastic, gothic, very British, really built up the spooky atmosphere. Next few episodes it just completely lost the plot"

Totally agree with this - I was loving it when it was the creepy children/dolls' house/ghosts/mystery of Hannah stuff. I hated the last two episodes - the Viola episode was just unpleasant
throughout, and I never warmed to Dani so wasn't interested in her What Happened Next.

Promising start but fizzled out.

ODFOx · 26/10/2020 07:18

I watched the last episode last night.
I have a question about the weird faced twin that was 'haunting' the uncle in his empty office. Was it supposed to be his guilt or his alcoholism or an actual ghost, and if the latter, where did it go?

Ridingthegravytrain · 28/10/2020 07:47

just a guilty figment of his imagination I believe. Stemmed from his brother calling him an evil grinning fool or something.
