Anyone watching?

OP posts:

The last episode was great.
I still don't understand the point of the accents. The background of the characters wasn't relevant to the plot, so why did they have to be Scottish/Northern/posh? Why couldn't they just have had them all with their normal accents? It would have been way less distracting. Peter's accents was so dreadful that we didn't have a clue what he was saying at times, despite us being Scottish. And his mum was even worse! There are plenty of Scottish actors they could have used for her part.

cushioncovers · 18/10/2020 11:37

Oh so the bride was actually Flora as an adult. ? That bit went over my head for so reason😳

Rollergirl11 · 18/10/2020 11:51

I don’t see why it had to be set in England at all! If Mike Flanagan was so set on using the same actors and they struggled so much with the accents why didn’t he just set it in America?

I just thought it was spectacularly dull. Why did Henry have an evil double? That was never fully explained. The scenes where he was maniacally grinning back at himself were so cringe and embarrassing that I had to watch through my fingers. Actually speaking of which Henry Thomas is an appalling actor, I even thought that in Hill House. He looks mad half the time, his facial expressions never match the mood he’s trying to convey.

I'm having a lazy Sunday and just watching The Innocents 1961. It's a lot easier to understand and Flora does not say Splendid once.

Yesterdayforgotten · 18/10/2020 12:25

Just noticed 'The Turning' on prime video. It is a 2020 film and seems to be another take on the novel Bly Manor is based on. Hmmm interesting and so far seems better, only just started it though.

Will take a look at that.
SpanishFly · 18/10/2020 12:48

@cushioncovers lol 😆 In the scene at the end, she looks at them all individually, and they show you who they all were - Flora and Henry, Owen and Miles

SpanishFly · 18/10/2020 12:49

Did anyone else get irritated at the constant use of "Poppins"? Aaargh!

BlusteryShowers · 18/10/2020 12:56

I was looking forward to this but I was disappointed to find it was another Turn of the Screw adaptation as soon as they mentioned the first dead governess. I read a book last year that I didn't realise at first was based on TotS so I'm ready to see something original now.

Rollergirl11 · 18/10/2020 13:01

@SpanishFly yes that was very irritating too! I watched every episode in a permanent state of frustration! The bit where Danni jokily puts on an English accent when talking to the gardener about being boring and going to the pub, I nearly threw the TV out the window! 😂

MrsMayo · 18/10/2020 13:16

Very.
SpanishFly · 18/10/2020 13:33

Once would have been cute, but 17 times per episode was cringey and jarred.

charliebear78 · 18/10/2020 14:23

I am probably in the minority but I enjoyed the earlier episodes much more.
Once they all started dream hopping nad being tucked away! argh!
Totally agree about Henry, his accent was terrible and embarrassing and his "evil twin" grinning like a fool...
I only noticed in the very last episode that Dani has two different coloured eyes(probably because before I was always looking over her shoulder playing spot the spooks)
Liked how it showed her hand resting on Jamie's shoulder at the end.

SpanishFly · 18/10/2020 14:25

Yes I agree with you, I didn't think they all needed a full episode of back story, it was too much. I prefer the episodes of the actual happenings in the creepy house

EThreepwood · 18/10/2020 14:47

Why did Uncle Henry have a devil on his shoulder persona?... I didn't get that. They just seemed to drop it without explanation.

iklboo · 18/10/2020 14:49

She only got the other colour eye after her encounter with Viola.

Don't want to waste the ending but what happened the glowing glasses ghost?! He had been stalking her for years and suddenly disappeared? Think I've missed a vital bit somewhere 🧐

whoknows2 · 18/10/2020 14:55

@EThreepwood - was a curse originating from his brother? Said he had to live with himself - an evil grinning idiot.

PontiacBandit · 18/10/2020 15:01

I've just binge watched this and found it disappointing, weird and confusing.
I was hoping the Lady was their mother trying to protect the kids but we have no idea how their parents died and Rebecca and Peters story was so dull.
I was also distracted by Uncle Henry being Elliott from ET.

iklboo · 18/10/2020 15:12

I think she exorcised him when she burned his glasses and let him go.

Pebble21uk · 18/10/2020 17:23

Does anyone know why Flora had become Flora's middle name at the end? What was the relevance of that? Was it so we didn't guess it was Flora - seemed a bit contrived!

SPOILER ALERT*

And why did Dani have to go back to the lake to kill herself? Couldn't she have done it anywhere??
And where were Dani and Jamie living in Ep9. I thought they had gone to the States, but must have been supposed to be the UK or she couldn't have got back to the lake.

There were so many parts that made no sense! It felt like Mike Flanagan decided he could make up whatever rules he wanted as it's not naturalistic. He just forgot that we didn't know what they were!

I happened to be watching re-runs of the comedy 'Ghosts' the other night and I reckon he may have looked there for inspiration...

Large English mansion - check (even though it looked nothing like one)
Ghosts who can't leave the boundary of the house - check
Ghosts who can talk and interact with each other but not all living people can see them - check...

Only Ghosts is much funnier!!

That said, personally I loved the lesbian relationship (being one myself) it's still pretty rare to find it in a drama where it's not the point of the drama but could just as easily be a male/female relationship.

As I said on another thread... to be honest, I'd've been quite happy just watching 9 episodes of their relationship - would have held my attention a lot more!!

iklboo · 18/10/2020 18:19

And why did Dani have to go back to the lake to kill herself? Couldn't she have done it anywhere??

I think it's because that's where she made the pact with Viola?

Series 2 is on iplayer now.

MrsMayo · 18/10/2020 20:50

The lady telling the story said she had changed the names and that's why the middle name was Flora.

In The Innocents 1961 they never mentioned why the parents died

Has anyone seen the BBC Turn of The Screws 2009 adaption with Michelle Dockery and Dan Stevens?

Sorry, I've become a bit obsessed with what they had based The Haunting of Bly Manor on. I have never heard of it before.

JonasKahnwald · 18/10/2020 21:00

Apparently Henry Thomas confirmed that the parents died in a plane crash in India.
