Anyone watching?

watched episode 7 and 8 last night. I just find the repetitive dialogue so irritating. First with the “perfectly splendid” and now with the “tucked away aren’t I” and the “wake, walk, sleep” over and over. Also the narrator’s accent in episode 8 was jarring in its badness. Although I think I now know who the narrator is.

Still love the music, which is beautiful and sad. Still prefer Hill House by a mile. The character arcs were epic and you felt like you were on a journey with them from start to finish and were really rooting for them. I’m not engaged with any of the characters in Bly Manor whatsoever.

Lepetitpiggy · 13/10/2020 20:14

I didnt really 'get' the ending. Or maybe I was just exhausted by it all!

MrsMayo · 14/10/2020 09:39

In the few few episodes I was very irritated with Flora and everything being splendid and nearly stopped watching it. However, I started to enjoy it a bit more. I was confused a bit so I did read a few episode recaps in the middle but I thought the last three episodes were very good.

I've started Hill House again, I think I still prefer that one.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/10/2020 09:44

How are people not finding it scary lol. When Does was singing, episode 2, during the hide and seek game... Aagghhhh.

And I think the lad is doing a really good job of going from nice kid to creepy sleaze

AgentCooper · 14/10/2020 09:46

It’s growing on me a bit now but Lord the fucking accents.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/10/2020 09:49

What's the issues with the accents? I told DH MN didn't like the accents but I can't remember why and I don't want to back read as I'm only on episode 2 and Andrey had 1 accidental spoiler

LemmysAceCard · 14/10/2020 09:55

Nowhere near as good as Hill House. I know it is a small thing but making out it is in London /England but actually filmed in Canada really get on my wick.

You can tell its not London, oh stick a red phone box on the street, they will never know, have everyone speak awfully posh, they will never know, and the house looks American / Canadian, with pull lights in the closet - did they have closets in those days?

Nowhere near scary. Episode 8 was probably the best.

AgentCooper · 14/10/2020 10:50

@SleepingStandingUp the narrator’s take on a Northern English accent is mental. It’s so distracting. And Peter Quint’s mad Sean Connery accent. I get that the director obviously wanted to use folk he’d used in Hill House but God, they needed a better accent coach, the vowels are insane.

charliebear78 · 14/10/2020 15:58

I am going to watch episode 3 tonight.
I agree @SleepingStandingUp
The humming and the "thing" that joined in was creepy AF

Juniperandrage · 14/10/2020 16:02

Is it scary? I didn't find the Hill house one scary, but I did find it absolutely heartbreaking.

WhoWants2Know · 14/10/2020 16:17

It felt much less scary than the first one.

I listened to an American podcast about the show and the different reception was very interesting. The accents weren't particularly noticeable to them and they all thought the little girl was adorable.

Tbf anything involving mirrors, dolls etc I find creepy but then I'm very jumpy. I actually went and sat by my husband on the sofa at that bit 😂😂
TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 14/10/2020 18:41

I had to keep turning Hill House off because the tall ghost man was terrifying!
Bly Manor is no where near as scary. But episode 8 is so sad :( (although I agree about the narrators accent. Its so annoying!)

charliebear78 · 14/10/2020 18:42

@SleepingStandingUp Enjoy!
I was already sat next to mine-but I did give him a "WTH" look!
I remember when I was in my 20s watching Horror movies on my own-Now I am pathetic and do get creeped out easily!

SleepingStandingUp · 14/10/2020 18:47

I tried to watch the original Ring once at Uni, I think I lasted about 7 minutes lol.

The baby monitor is next to the telly so when the babies make noises in their sleep it's like it's on the telly. Yeah that helped, not!!

waitrosetrollydolly · 14/10/2020 18:59

I was mildly irritated by the crappy accents and un Englishness of things that were supposed to be English . But the biggest thing that I couldn't get my head around was how one particularly messy character grew up to be perfectly manicured with amazing hair and pjs by the end ?! How did that happen ?

Yes, I thought that too about the messy character.
anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 14/10/2020 20:35

Ah the fate of the poor little ghost boy Sad

SidVisk · 14/10/2020 20:48

Sorry I haven't RTFT but it's worth watching for the earrings alone! 😍 80s finest.

Preferred hill house. Its worth a watch but I hated the ending and fell asleep during it Shock it dragged on so long and really spoiled the entire thing. I enjoyed parts of it and felt it had a lot of potential but far too much was covered and this ruined it for me. Also felt ending was ridiculous that after years ended up... wont say any more incase it spoils it for anybody intending to watch!

PuppyMonkey · 14/10/2020 21:49

I think they lost the plot about half way through, it picked up again a bit in the later episodes. Quite liked the 18th century bits.

Still haven’t really got a clue what all that was about with the kids and the “Scottish” driver and Miss Wotsit.Confused

And there was a scene where there’s one of the women ghosts wailing and Flora goes “shhhhhh” impatiently - who was that?Confused

Overall, a good try but a bit shit really. Grin

WhoWants2Know · 15/10/2020 07:06

The ghost making noise while Flora shushed it was Perdita, who was killed in the attic by her sister when she opened the trunk of her sister's clothes.

I thought this was long-winded claptrap which was terribly cast. The lead actress was AWFUL! SO annoying. She sometimes sounded Irish or like she was about 6 herself...and we all know how bad the narrator's accent was.

It was so stretched out! They could have told the entire thing over 3 episodes.

FortunesFave · 15/10/2020 13:36

Puppy I think that was the woman from the lake...well she had no face anyway!
