Anyone watching?

The seventh episode was my favourite by far.

I've not watched it, but my teenage kids did and they both sobbed their hearts out at the ending. Sad

I didn't watch it for fear of being terrified, as I was by the previous one did, I shan't be caught out again. Grin

WhoWants2Know · 11/10/2020 23:01

It's not scary in the same way as the previous one, if that helps.

@MostIneptThatEverStepped

I was reading that it was filmed in Canada, which explains a lot.

The recent adaptation of The Turn of the Screw was infinitely better.

Huh? Why? 🤣🤣
AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 12/10/2020 14:11

It’s definitely not scary like the first one with jumps etc, it has more a sense of continual dread right from the start. The continuous feeling that something awful is going to happen and I find that worse to be honest

WhoWants2Know · 12/10/2020 19:54

I was just watching an old Gogglebox where they were all watching the first series, absolutely bricking it at Luke hiding under the bed from the tall man.

I forgot how on edge the first one made me! 🤣🤣

This one was much more mild, but DD and I did grab each other during certain bits.

I'm half way through this series, and it's completely bonkers.

It's like some surreal dimension where an American girl, who sounds a bit like Kermit the frog, has crossed into an intersplice between 1930s England and Britain of the early 60s, all held together with superglue from the early 90s.

The pub just made me laugh. '87 in a city pub in London? You wouldn't be able to see for the cigarette smoke. And it would be packed with braying traders.

It's an utterly bizarre show.

SpanishFly · 13/10/2020 00:16

The Scottish accent is just dreadful. Why do writers cast people then make them have a totally different accent? There are plenty of Scottish actors around. Or just let him use his own accent.
And the outdoor scenes of London that were clearly some cosmopolitan hipster American street, nowhere near London. Argh, it could have been so much better.

CoffeeInAnIV · 13/10/2020 00:18

I really enjoyed it. Hill House is one of the best things I've seen on Netflix so I had high hopes and the allegorical narrative didn't disappoint. Not as many 'scares' but I like my creepiness with a bit of story anyway. I sobbed my heart out at the end too. Mike Flanagan knows how to make me cry.

FreshfieldsGal · 13/10/2020 05:50

Up to the episode where the housekeeper has her flashbacks - being honest, it's not a patch on the original film version (the Innocents.) Agree with pp comments re the annoying accents and the ridiculously posh policeman Grin

Posturesorposes · 13/10/2020 06:09

We have watched it all because we were so impressed by Hill House. But we were bored stiff by it and found it a pile of shite. Towards the end we considered briefly why we were still watching it and spouse said it’s like those scams you get drawn into and then you will you’ve invested so much already you want to see how it ends. But gosh another more of those I am tucked away aren’t i sequences and I’d break the telly!!!!

Karmagoat · 13/10/2020 08:31

I loved Hill House so was really looking forward to this one, so dissapointed!
The acting was awful, worse contenders being the American girl (who was really good in Hill House but don't know what happened here), the woman playing Rebecca, the Uncle and the kids were atrocious!
I couldn't get past that and the terrible accents, the fact it wasn't remotely scary and the timing of the end didn't make sense either!.

picklecustard · 13/10/2020 09:29

Watched episode 1 last night, what on earth is with the narrators accent??! Utterly bizarre!

charliebear78 · 13/10/2020 10:26

I spent the first episode cringing at the accents and terrible dialogue..I turned to my OH after it and asked if we should bother watching anymore-he said yes!
We are now up to episode 3..I have sort of managed to ignore the accents and the silly stereotypes.
Found the part where Dani is playing hide and seek with the humming 'thing' creepy!
Anyone else find that playing spot a spook is quite distracting from what is actually going on???
I watched The Innocents many years ago and only realised this was the same when Peter Qwint was glaring through the window at them.
In summary I dont mind it..and will watch till the end over the weekend(strictly is back too yay)

picklecustard · 13/10/2020 10:35

What is Dani’s accent? I’ve seen the actress in You and Hill House and her accent is different in this, but I can’t always tell different American accents apart.

FiveGensOfLove · 13/10/2020 10:51

The fact that it’s so clearly not filmed in England is massively off-putting. The insect noise at night?! The weird non-native bird noises?! The house is the least English country house I’ve seen.

But I am gripped. I reckon the narrator is putting on that (awful) northern accent because she’s the gardener, years on.

WhoWants2Know · 13/10/2020 11:50

The playing hide and seek was bizarre.

So kids are bad, spend the day being punished and then you decide to reward them by unleashing them to run around a big dark house at bedtime?

@FreshfieldsGal that's the episode we're at too

username501 · 13/10/2020 12:02

I'm loving it so far. Turn of the Screw is one of my favourite books and I'm loving this adaptation.

Accents are weird though. No spoilers please as I'm only on the third episode.

Didn't really like Hill House (and that's one of my fav books as well) but am loving this.

peachescariad · 13/10/2020 12:06

Me too and I'm even more confused! will keep at it though cos all that need some explaining Grin.

Change of tack but Rocks and Fish Tank on Netflix were great viewing.

SleepingStandingUp · 13/10/2020 12:09

Were only on the first episode but I can't remember a narrator so I'm wondering if I need to start again.

The perfectly splendid from Peppa is annoying but with her personality changes i figure it's like shes over compensating

SleepingStandingUp · 13/10/2020 12:10

However the cook come driver is also in iZombie which were also watching and it's screwing with my head lol

nitgel · 13/10/2020 12:20

Loved ep 8 fab creepy as anything watching last one tonight

StellaGib · 13/10/2020 12:23

I did enjoy it, but it wasn’t really scary and the accents were a bit of a trial Grin Nowhere near as good as Hill House.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 13/10/2020 13:15

@CoffeeInAnIV omg yes!!! Episode 8 and 9 made me cry a lot haha then at the end of 5...its the music as well
