Ghosts Series 2 *Bingewatchers spoiler thread*

Afternoon.
Setting up just in case any other binge watchers did want to discuss so the original stays spoiler-free.
Someone asked why Thomas's love letter kept disappearing - I assumed because he was psychologically at peace with it now: does not need to keep rereading source of heartbreak as it was not from his love. But that was a wild guess on my part and not sure why the closure did not allow him to pass on/move on as a ghost like the other one referred to.
My favourite part of the whole series was Pat being lovely to the younger robber, you know, take the better path pep talk...then on seeing him put chewing gum on the table shouting BORSTAL!!!! at the top of his lungs. Cracked me up, probably because of having to try to get all the used gum off school desks with a knife back in the day. You turned a desk upside down and there'd be 30 bits of pink, yellow, white and grey used and discarded gum stuck under each table Envy >not envy.
I also thought the Captain's scenes were beautifully done and I did tear up at them.

I love this show. I love horrible histories too, I think it works so well because the cast have worked together for so long and argue genuinely friends in real life. There’s a lot of respect between them all. I honestly don’t have enough good words to say about it

MiriamShepherd · 02/10/2020 14:22

Is it a definite that we’re going to have a Christmas special does anyone know? I love this show, I was going to watch every episode each Monday and here I am rewatching it for the fourth time

Quackersandcheese3 · 02/10/2020 15:10

I’d love an xmas special extended episode.

chrislilleyswig · 02/10/2020 16:09

Christmas episode will have a bit about Julians background I believe

And sadly it's only half an hour Sad

Ulysses · 02/10/2020 16:21

I could watch this for hours, it's truly delightful. All of the characters are endearing and the concepts really clever. It has real charm, wit and the right dose of sentimentality.

LemmysAceCard · 02/10/2020 20:06

The burglary episode where Julian bent over with no trousers on and the other male ghosts sort of go “uurrggh” and look away. At the end when Thomas said “I would like to fight again, could that be a club” had me in stitches.

newlabelwriter · 03/10/2020 07:17

We finished it last night. It’s so brilliant. I’d really recommend Yonderland too, it’s also by the HH team and really funny.

Lemonylemony · 03/10/2020 08:04

I love this, am on my third watch through and agree with everyone that it’s done very well and pitched just right. Fun, entertaining but thought provoking as well. Well written and well acted. I enjoyed the Thomas episode, it got me wondering though, what would it take for the ghosts to be sucked off moved on? Both Thomas and Pat have had big revelations that you’d think might put them at peace but still haven’t been sucked off moved on - is it that in death they’ve found their true purpose/family? What was the point of having Keith Darren Dean turn up at the wedding? (Love that name is so if it’s era as well).

I’d be v interested in an episode into Kitty’s story, and wonder whether they will address the race aspect at all - not many aristocratic black Georgians around (although certainly there were black British people in Georgian times, just don’t think very many of them were living Kitty’s apparent life of innocent luxury). There are some other stories that I think may be best more left to the imagination though, Julian’s Tory MP sex-romp death is a punchline in itself and I’m more interested in his development as a person now, how working with the other ghosts is making him more empathetic, and Mary’s story as well, I think the running joke that she’s not ready to talk about the witch trial works well and am more interested in how much she is learning from Alison and becoming more self-confident etc as a result.

Did like the anti-homophobia message of the last episode too, Fanny coming to accept and approve of same-sex marriage and Captain dancing with the men at the end.

LunaNorth · 03/10/2020 08:54

Maybe they’ll all get sucked off together as a finale.

Julian would like that

PenguindreamsofDraco · 03/10/2020 11:47

I wondered if Kitty wasn't a noble woman but had been dressed up like that as a joke and somehow it backfired and she died. If do, I hope she doesn't learn the truth because she's such a sweet innocent, I don't want that messed with!

Yes, she’s so fixated on friendship and fitting in, I wondered if they had gone for the angle that she was a sort of ‘pet’. I hope not - it would be better to have colour-blind casting imo. But I’m sure they’d do it sensitively.
chrislilleyswig · 03/10/2020 12:14

I wondered if she had maybe been an illegitimate child of the "master" who would have been Isabella grandfather maybe. Brought over to live in the UK but treated as a toy by the family

I was imagining they would have treated her badly but she was so sweet and innocent she didn't realise.

I'm clearly over invested

Saucery · 03/10/2020 12:16

I also wonder about Mary. The writers must know that most suspected witches were hanged, not burnt. So her reluctance to talk about it could have something to do with the circumstances not being ‘official’.

chrislilleyswig · 03/10/2020 12:19

In the Free Pass episode when the director shouts "cut" she mutters "cut what, oh no my lace". I wondered about the historical reference. I thought lace would be the fastenings at the top of her dress. Yet she still had her dress on.

Saucery · 03/10/2020 12:21

I’ve just googled that and it comes up with cutting lace from a wig so it doesn’t show when you wear it.

Lemonylemony · 03/10/2020 12:22

They touched on that with her being so good at hide and seek, that no one ever found her.

Maybe that’s how she died. Climbed into a box or wardrobe, and it locked behind her and she suffocated...

This isn't real. It's a comedy

So why did your post make me feel so incredibly sad. Sad

leastfavouritecrisps · 03/10/2020 17:06

We were supposed to watch one episode a week to make it last. We binge watched them all.

Fanny's husband only existed because Thomas's cousin betrayed him. I think she said that her husband was the cousin's great grandson. n

I love all of the characters. I want to be friends with Mary and Kitty.

There have been a few bittersweet moments in the series, haven’t there?
AccioWine · 03/10/2020 17:53

Oh there is definitely sadness mixed in with the comedy. They do it beautifully. Like when Thomas has just been shot in the duel, and he drops the gun, which goes off and kills a bird, and he says sorry. Made me laugh despite the situation.

I had thought about Kitty just not being found, but the idea that it was because she was just a "pet" to a rich family is horrifyingly sad.

This is who I think of when I consider Kitty’s backstory. Dido Elizabeth Belle wasn’t a ‘pet’ as such, she was a companion and lady’s maid.

SequinsandStiIettos · 03/10/2020 19:15

That's an interesting link saucery thank you.

Oh I hope that was the case. Kitty is just so sweet
Lemonylemony · 03/10/2020 19:36

Didn’t realise until I looked up the cast that the same actor plays both Robin and Humphrey’s head.
