Changed the name of this thread as we were very upset with the ending of series 3 out in Bangladesh! Waiting out for news of series 4 and hoping it might not be long now. In the meantime, we are reviewing the seven series of Soldier Soldier.

Really enjoyed the first episode and quite glad Georgie and Captain James didn't get together.

Will they make another series with a new 'Our Girl' if this is Michelle Keegan's last series?

Magi84 · 28/03/2020 16:34

HelloBeRead the question about another series always comes to mind and we've found normally it takes a while for the BBC to decide whether it wants to commission another one. It was two years almost before they decided on a second series and of course because of that Lacey Turner had in the meantime gone back to Eastenders so they changed the female lead. After series 2 was the only time they made a fairly quick decision that there would be another series. However that didn't mean filming started quickly as it was again about two years before we had series 3. That of course, although it consisted of 12 episodes, was split up and didn't actually finish until July 2018 (all mixed in with the football World Cup). Then after that it was January 2019 before they announced series 4 which has only just started, having been filmed over several months in 2019. So you can see it is anybody's guess if or when another series might be announced especially as they have to sort out a new Our Girl.

For my part I would love to see LT as Molly Dawes or Molly James back in the part. Not sure we would get the Captain though as according to TG he has left the army!

happilybemused · 28/03/2020 17:24

I'd love to see LT back as Molly. The first series was definitely the best IMO

Magi84 · 28/03/2020 18:36

Yes Happily I think there is a great many of us who feel that. It was quite unique in how it caught the interest of so many of us and we all became deeply invested in CJ and MD as a couple. Actually I thought the chemistry between BA and LT was superb. Excellent acting.

When the second series was announced with a change of female lead I decided to watch it as at least BA was still there and in fact I really enjoyed it as LP was a great addition and of course we had mentions of Molly and learned they were married. The third series was, for me anyway, a great disappointment with Elvis bring killed and the absolute fiasco of CJ taking up with another medic!

However I have started with this one and will see how it turns out. 😳

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 28/03/2020 21:36

I hadn't realised it had taken so long between filming the seasons - thanks for the reminder! I'd love to see Molly back too.

Ilovelblue · 29/03/2020 00:21

Invisible and Happily have you read any of our other threads or have you just stumbled across this one? We tend to watch a new episode in 'radio silence' then do a proper watchalong a couple of days later. It'd be great if you want to join us. In view of all the depressing news around us, it's an hour of escapism too.

The tension after CJ had been shot in series 1, episode 4 was unbelievable. We couldn't believe how invested we had become in it all and had to tell ourselves it was only a TV series and not real!

Some of us (me included) even stayed at the hotel near Bath where the restaurant scenes were filmed afterwards.

Many apologies as didn't realise it was a private thread. Will remove from watching.

Best regards

Rhubarb01 · 29/03/2020 09:10

@happilybemused - to paraphrase CJ "Please come back to us!" Smile

This isn't a private thread, we've just dwindled to a few regulars over the years and got into a habit of doing things a certain way - like old married couples Grin. We started doing the watchalongs about five years ago just to keep us interested and stop the thread from dying out altogether in between series as we enjoyed chatting on here to likeminded people. After we ran out of Our Girl/we're getting to the point we couldn't watch it again - we started watching old Soldier, Soldier old episodes just to keep contact going.

Honestly, we're happy to discuss anything with anyone at anytime. If you'd like to join the watchalongs that's great, but if not, that's fine too, but please feel free to join in. Anyone who loves Molly/CJ/Elvis and even Georgie, is always welcome here with open arms. Grin

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 29/03/2020 10:20

I loved Soldier Soldier too - fab show!

Magi84 · 29/03/2020 13:35

Oh Happily please don't think this is a private thread as we, as Rhu has mentioned, just dwindled to a few. Immediately after series one there were loads of people on the first thread and all manner of things about OG kept us chatting. Then as each series has come along I'm afraid the interest felt away. I think somehow we had expected the CJ/MD story to continue and when it didn't disappointment set in.

So in the end a few, of what you might call stalwarts, carried on and with a change of name for the thread we have now reached No. 54.

Soldier Soldier has kept an army theme going for us during the lengthy gaps between OG series. I am not very good at keeping up with a watchalong so I tend to enjoy reading all the comments and adding the odd one here and there the next day.

Now that we have another series of OG it would be great to have you, and of course any others who are fans, joining in or even commenting afterwards. Please stay with us. 👍🏻

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 29/03/2020 13:40

I have posted previously, although I tend to change my username regularly so you wouldn't recognise me Grin

I can't do the watchalongs as don't have the time but do enjoy reading the comments and posting occasionally.

Ilovelblue · 31/03/2020 22:01

Evening all!

Well there were echoes of series 1 in that episode! The second half was pretty tense. I'm enjoying it.

That American doctor is definitely going to be the love interest.

What does everyone else think?

Ilovelblue · 31/03/2020 22:02

Happily I meant to say but I hope my previous post didn't confuse you. This definitely isn't a private thread and we hope if you're enjoying the new series that you will join in with our watchalong and general musings.

Magi84 · 31/03/2020 22:07

Well a pretty full on episode with loads of action. Certainly shades of series one with Saunders getting so involved with the little girl.

Throbber acting a bit like Smurf in his attitude to Afghans. Can't say I find him as likeable a character though.

Yes very much agree re the American doctor.b so far so good.

Rhubarb01 · 31/03/2020 22:08

Evening. Have to agree that I enjoyed that. The Two Section banter is growing on me and made me laugh a few times.

I think it's quite amusing that they've tackled Georgie's inability to do what she is told and answer back head on. It's difficult to see how she has got promoted to Sergeant given her inability to follow orders. She really must be the nuts as a medic.

Dr Garcia makes a very suitable love interest - there's a nice chemistry growing, but she really is suffering badly. It really is almost as if Belize and Bangladesh never happened at all and we've moved straight on. I wonder if at any point reference will be made to CJ at all and where he is these days. I'm liking Fingers new attitude to life and his relationship with Georgie.

Yes, I'm enjoying this all so far.

Ilovelblue · 31/03/2020 22:30

Watchalong 9 pm on Thursday ladies?

OP posts:
Magi84 · 01/04/2020 07:26

Your comment Rhu that it is almost as if Belize and Bangladesh never happened made me realise that in fact that is how I have been dealing with my thoughts on the last series. When it cut off after Nepal I have felt the next eight episodes should never have happened. A total waste of CJ's character. Admittedly I can't visualise in what category he could have continued but what they did with his character was a waste of time. 😡

SavageBeauty73 · 01/04/2020 11:27

Gutted Captain James isn't in it!

In terms of her PTSD it's like the last tour didn't happen 🤷‍♀️

eejittwo · 01/04/2020 12:02

Yeah, these dreams and thoughts and memories of Elvis should have been happening in Nigeria, Belize and Bangladesh. And yes, she and CJ could have had the odd moments reminiscing about Elvis and sharing their grief at their respective loss, but to write these episodes the way they did was MINCE.

Magi84 · 01/04/2020 12:33

Savage and eejit I agree 100%. Nigeria, Belize and Bangladesh were the obvious opportunity to handle how badly she was suffering over Elvis's death. I wonder if, having got themselves the agreement to do 12 episodes, the writers were a bit thrown by LP not being able to continue further and therefore being killed off. It felt a bit to me like they were stumbling about wondering what to do next (the writers I mean) so they just came up with a really muddled series. Even Bones suddenly being disposed of seemed a big unprepared.

They do seem to have picked up on how things should be in this series or so it seems so far anyway. Pity they wasted the opportunity and didn't handle CJ's PTSD properly.

Delphin · 01/04/2020 18:40

Hello! Long time no see!
waves at everyone
I can't believe I missed the first episode :-). I came across an article saying that OG4 had started. I have caught up with ep. 1 and have ep. 2 ready for tonight. Hopefully the niece-kid will be in bed earlier than the last few nights, so that I can indulge!
I haven't had much time for TV in the last year, what with the company going into liquidation (yep, without a job officially from today, hurray. Great timing.).

Delphin · 01/04/2020 18:55

... Grumble... Why did it post just now?
I thought ep. 4.1 was enjoyable, getting to know all the newbies. Questions: Will Lt. Hurst get himself hurt, maybe stumbling over his own feet? He's so green. But then again, he's fresh from Sandhurst, right?
Will Fingers have another go at selection for Special Forces? And come back as an SF trooper in series 5 Grin?
Waiting for more about Georgie. I thought she was good as the "drill sergeant" (not as good as whatsisname was in series one, but those are big shoes to fill!). Her timeline seems a bit compressed compared to the real world, what with her only now really getting hit with the consequences of Elvis' death.
Maybe I'll have the kid in bed by 22.00 CEST tomorrow and join the watchalong for ep. 2 (ponders taking away TV privileges, works wonders, normally [evil]).
So maybe see you all tomorrow :-) !

LochJessMonster · 01/04/2020 19:14

Hi! Can I join in? Been a massive fan since series 1, thought Lacey Turner was amazing.

Loved the first 2 episodes, can’t wait to see what happens.

eejittwo · 01/04/2020 19:24

So pleased to see some old and new names here. Bring on tomorrow.

Magi84 · 01/04/2020 19:43

Welcome LochJess and good to see you back Delphin. Lots of questions you posed there Delphin. I think you're right about Hurst I believe he is straight out of Sandhurst and I remember reading that during filming they called him Sandy. Getting their banter started I suppose. Anyway hope you get the "kid" to bed in good time to perhaps join the watchalong tomorrow night. I can never keep up but like reading the comments.

Agree completely with you LochJess?I too thought LT was great in the first series. For me she is Our Girl although I am gradually getting to quite like MK (taken me a while I know). To be honest I think the acting chemistry between LT and BA was exceptional.
