Changed the name of this thread as we were very upset with the ending of series 3 out in Bangladesh! Waiting out for news of series 4 and hoping it might not be long now. In the meantime, we are reviewing the seven series of Soldier Soldier.

Evening everyone. Yes, just agreeing, I'm really enjoying this series. Strangely, the fact that CJ isn't in it, is making it easier for me to enjoy this for what it is. Keeping my fingers crossed for Fingers...no pun intended Grin

Ilovelblue · 14/04/2020 20:55

Will he survive or won't he? I'm keeping everything crossed for him.

Quick question: I need to set up a new thread for our Thursday watchalong but can't decide what to call it? Any reference to CJ/Captain James/Addicts is no longer suitable. Also not sure whose photo to put at the start? (Need to work out how to get a screenshot off my laptop too).

Well, well, well ...
That was an episode and a half!

Ilovelblue · 14/04/2020 22:00

Phew, well that was quite some episode. Why could we not have had writing like that in the previous series!?

Fingers RIP.

Bumping to top of my threads. Missed the start so waiting to watch on iplayer.

eejittwo · 14/04/2020 22:02

ilove - what about just that. Fingers RIP?

Magi84 · 14/04/2020 22:03

Gosh really well done. Much more depth to this series. There must have been changes in production staff it is so much more powerful. Poor old Fingers that's the last original 2 section member gone.

Ilovelblue · 14/04/2020 22:03

Sorry eejit, what do you mean? Am I being thick?

eejit, understand now, the penny has dropped....!

Oh my goodness...that was tough watch! Lump in throat and dabbing eyes time. Hats off to TG and everyone else, some really good emotional scenes in that episode. I also thought there was some lovely photography - memories of that roof and stars scene from series 1. MK is playing this really well. I don't doubt the PTSD and everyone else can see it too. Nice to see senior officers actually slapping her down when they should be too. Bless dear old Fingers too! (Dr Antonio still providing a rather nice shoulder to cry on though Smile)

Ilovelblue · 14/04/2020 22:09

I thought the same about the roof and stars scene Rhu. Do we think anything will happen with Dr Antonio? Do you think Prof has feelings for Georgie too?

I thought it was a little odd that there was no sign of Max Lane at the funeral.

Rhubarb01 · 14/04/2020 22:11

Yes, I was wondering where her Dad was, not to mention Nan, plus where is Marie, and also, whose house was that?

PapsofJura · 14/04/2020 22:11

I have been a long time lurker on these threads but ooft, what an emotional one. Was on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

Rhubarb01 · 14/04/2020 22:11

Lulu - not Marie - duh!

Rhubarb01 · 14/04/2020 22:18

I think the problem of there being potential romantic interests for Georgie, is that she's really not in any suitable place to have a relationship with anyone. I think she and Prof are friends and connect on an intellectual level. They're both a bit older and have more life experience. I really can't see Georgie staying in the army - in some ways when she went off to help in the camp in Kenya, it seemed a potential future for her. Maybe she needs to do something like that where she can feel she is really making a difference to people's lives. I can't see her settling down - although she could always move sideways and maybe retrain as an NHS paramedic.

Ilovelblue · 14/04/2020 22:24

Hi Jura pleased to hear you've broken cover. As you know we ramble on and have kept this topic going since the first series back in 2014. We are doing a watchalong on Thursday at 9 pm so it would be lovely if you could join us?

OP posts:
Ilovelblue · 14/04/2020 22:27

When you think that Georgie has been kidnapped, held hostage, seen her fiance blown up and also tried to save her brother in law's life, that would be enough for anyone to want to leave the army.

LochJessMonster · 14/04/2020 22:45

Nice tribute to him this episode. Not convinced killing him off was necessary though.

Rhubarb01 · 14/04/2020 22:53

I agreeLochJess that it would have been nice to see Fingers come home safely, settle down and live happily with Marie, but it's a definite ending for the character, if the actor wants out - last of the originals so that's also sad - I suppose we have to face the fact that tragic deaths like Finger's happen too.

LochJessMonster · 14/04/2020 23:07

I know they have to show the reality of war etc but we’ve ready lost some pretty major characters, the best friend (smurf), the love interest (Elvis), the cheeky chappy (Bones) etc
It would have been nice to keep at least one prying all character. I guess it was between him and Monk.

Two things from this episode- they wouldn’t really fly someone back and forward for a few days at home, funeral or not.
And her insolence to superiors is incredible!

Ilovelblue · 14/04/2020 23:09

Ladies - hope the title of this is ok. We will definitely need a new thread on Thursday night.

So sad. Where was Georgie and Marie's dad at the funeral? Seemed odd that he wasn't there.

I hope at the end of this series Georgie finds peace and a way forward in her life outside of the British Army - she's done enough and needs a break now.

Magi84 · 15/04/2020 08:52

Yes it did seem strange Georgie's dad and of course sister Lulu were absent from the funeral but I guess it is always the same with follow on programmes and trying to use the same actors for a character. Actors have to sign up for other things and are then not available. Presumably the actor who plays G's dad had a spare slot where he could do that short scene at the time of Marie and Finger's wedding.

The title for the new thread seems to fit the bill admirably ilove thanks for doing it.

SavageBeauty73 · 16/04/2020 19:31

Fingers!!! Gutted. Wish they hadn't killed him off as he was a sweetie.

Surely Georgie would be court martial for rudeness?!

Rhubarb01 · 16/04/2020 20:58

She's certainly sailed closed to the wind on many occasions savage, but this week it was something else altogether - although, I think it's definitely PTSD behind her outbursts. She's never been afraid to tell senior officers her opinions, and although it was a bit unrealistic, there was a degree of politeness - but now it's just off the scale. I think they've cut her some slack because they know she's not behaving rationally.
