Roly

Well, there's no mistaking you are a natural born performer - so now we've got that out the way... but for me, it was way too heavy, the posture was not in the correct place for jive -
(audience boos)
Hang on a minute, you might learn something, the posture was not in the correct place for jive, the bottom is supposed to be out, the chest is a little bit more forward, you were too upright, the connections were not short enough and that's why it looked laboured to Craig, so Craig is exactly spot on so you need to get the correct fundamentals that belong with each dance, because you are a natural born performer but I can't let that slide and critique somebody else on the same thing
so you need to get your posture, your connections and make sure that you have the right technical things that are going on but otherwise- quite nice.

It was the tone really. Damning with faint praise.
Score: 5
I couldn't work out if she came across as arsey because she didn't like her, was reacting to the crowd booing, was pulling her down a peg or two because of her ringer status, had been told to go low to set them up on a journey...but they always input their score halfway through.
To put that 5 in context she also gave David 5 for the 3 lions foxtrot and she marked Mike's jive 1 point higher.

#justicefordanny

I actually sat and watched all his dances again on Youtube yesterday. He really was an absolute treat to watch. His jive and quickstep were phenomenal.

SoupDragon · 23/09/2019 07:26

Melvin Odoom went out because Anastacia wouldn't do the DO

Doctors said she couldnt do it due to injury.

We do this every so often too Blush
Really a joy to watch him dance, the choreography was all wonderful too. Loved their tango too.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/09/2019 08:06

The Charleston at Blackpool with that one-handed cartwheel!

I also really loved their Viennese Waltz - I love the INXS song they danced to, and liked the story-telling element too - always a bit of a treat when the sleb's an actor.

Danny's in White Christmas at the Dominion Theatre this Christmas - trying to work out if we can afford to go...

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/09/2019 08:07

Just catching up on a couple of threads over on DS, and see some posters seem to suggesting Kelvin might also be a ringer? I just don't see it myself, he was in Emmerdale since being young, and even if he did go to a stage school, surely he wouldn't learn so much dancing & it would have been years ago.

I think he must have a mix of natural talent, and also good work ethic, I think he will be similar to Danny in that sense that he seems to want to put the hours in during training.

Oti must be over the moon to have someone not only talented, but wanting to put in the hard work. It clearly showed.

xsquared · 23/09/2019 08:16

I don't think Kelvin is a ringer but he has mentioned that his dad used to dance Northern Soul and he wanted to emulate him.

That sneering "....quite nice", added at the end of SB's criticism of Emma, was horrible.

ConfCall · 23/09/2019 08:29

Emma Weymouth has barely been mentioned here. I wonder whether the public will be equally indifferent? She could be in the D/O.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/09/2019 08:35

I finally caught up on Saturday’s show and was pleasantly surprised

Anyone who thinks that Kelvin hasn’t had dance training, honestly it’s laughable. Of course he has! It’s almost impossible to teach non-dancers beautiful hand placement and hip rotation like that.

Anyway, actually a fab first show. I’ll look forward to the middle-of-the-pack people being picked off (Lady Emma, David James etc) and being left with the good ones and the entertaining ones.

Katya is definitely working the Chris Hollins magic. Interesting to see how great her choreography is without having Neil’s help this time (I assume)

One unpopular opinion I have is that I think Oti is in danger of being overexposed. I saw her on celebrity masterchef and something else. She’s sort of turning in to the darling of strictly

AnneShirleysNewDress · 23/09/2019 08:42

I'm watching Danny and Oti at the moment. Their American Smooth is just gorgeous, so much chemistry Glitterball

Theromanempire · 23/09/2019 09:04

Danny and Oti's American Smooth is my favourite Strictly dance ever - absolute perfection!! Every time I watch it, my heart still skips a beat when she jumps off the jet in case he drops her Confused

Theromanempire · 23/09/2019 09:05

coveting I had the same discussion with DH about how Kelvin couldn't have gone to stage school as he has been in Emmerdale since he was a child. DH thinks they would have put him through stage school but I don't think they would.

Shmithecat2 · 23/09/2019 09:13

Just watching this on catchup. I don't care if Kelvin has had dance training/so a ringer. He was bloody marvellous to watch.

And yy, Faye should've won. Her waltz to See The Day was glorious.

Miaowing · 23/09/2019 09:13

ok, can anyone explain to me what "contpowaft" actually is

I'e even googled it and am none the wiser

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 23/09/2019 09:14

I thought that Shirley's criticism of Honey was more damning of Anton TBH. I took from it that he wasn't teaching the basics of the dance at all, but as Honey was a good dancer, he got away with it.

I've always thought Anton was a rubbish teacher as even when given a semi-decent partner, he didn't make the best of it, whereas someone like Oti, Ola or Katya are really able to work to their partners strengths and show off what they can do, not make fools of them for what they can't.

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/09/2019 09:15

@Theromanempire even if he did go, we'd be talking what, 20-25 years ago? So, if he didn't keep up the dance training he may have learnt, it's a good many years ago, so I would assume he would have natural abilities regardless.

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/09/2019 09:16

ok, can anyone explain to me what "contpowaft" actually is

Contempo-waft, where they waft about barefooted in a floaty dress. Usually a show dance at the end. I just don't get it personally, but some love it. Contemporary dance.

Awrite · 23/09/2019 09:28

#rickywozrobbed

Ricky Whittle and Natalie Lowe losing to Chris Hollins surely must be the biggest injustice?

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/09/2019 09:32

Emma Weymouth has barely been mentioned here. I wonder whether the public will be equally indifferent? She could be in the D/O.

She seems nice & I do like Aljaz, but just didn't seem to have as much personality shining through as some of the others, will be interested to see her on ITT.

MaitreKarlsson · 23/09/2019 09:53

Can I join in? Love the show.
I'm glad others remember Colin Jackson- what a travesty that was, the man was a great dancer.
Also still seething over Fabrice Muamba being robbed on a Christmas Special. Could not understand that. Shock

MaitreKarlsson · 23/09/2019 09:55

Have just googled that Christmas special with Fabrice Muamba.
It was in 2012 Blush
Perhaps it's time to let it go....

ElspethFlashman · 23/09/2019 10:09

I actually am really supporting Emma, cos she has been through the most awful shit.

Basically - she's biracial. Her mum and her eventual husbands mum were friends and she and Husband were pals as kids. All very cosy, right? Yep, just up to the point where they got engaged and the future MIL threw a fit because she would CONTAMINATE THE BLOODLINE. I shit you not. FIL was equally shitty. Neither came to the wedding. Still a rift as far as I know.

Then Emma got pregnant, and started to get really ill. Turns out she has a rare condition that means pregnancy could give you a heart attack. Labour could kill her. So she had to be hospitalised and had to have a really careful C section. Told there was no way she could bear another child.

So cos they're loaded, they got a surrogate in the US to bear the 2nd one for them (the laws in the UK were too loose).

So she's been through a lot and she seems like a very nice girl and I'm 100% behind her. She won't win or anything but I hope she gets to Halloween.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 23/09/2019 10:10

#justicefordanny indeed. Never have I been so moved by a dancer, ringer or not Grin

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 23/09/2019 10:34

Doctors said she couldn't do it due to injury.

No, doctors advised her to rest before Saturday night. She opted to dance rather than pull out of the show and Brendan modified the routine accordingly.
After performing on Saturday she then did not see a doctor until Monday (her own words in an interview) and was cleared for the Viennese later that week.
I would be surprised if they didn't have physios on call back stage but as they film back to back and she was 10th performing with 5 couples ahead of them then any consultation and problem with reperforming should have been addressed ahead of the filming of the results show. Instead it did indeed come across that she wouldn't as opposed to couldn't perform the modified routine as the 30 minute discussion with producers did not occur until the dance off results were announced.
If it had been handled differently then Melvin going home automatically by default on viewer votes would have been less controversial.
