Karim is 25, not 19.

Oh really! I feel ashamed to admit this, but I feel I have reached an age now where I had to google how old he was last night to see if it was ok to fancy him Blush
I loved his dancing. I got 19 on my search, but feel better if he is 25!

Raffles1981 · 22/09/2019 18:13

After a stinking cold knocking me for six these last few days and a trip to A&E with our DS2 this morning (cracked open his head, nothing a bit of glue didn't sort) I sat and watched the whole thing while having a pity party. I actually liked the mix this year. Although, with such strong starts, how far can some of these guys go? But I do agree, too long and some hiring bits. Emma and Anton seem very vanilla to me.

Horsemad · 22/09/2019 18:16

Apologies, it appears he is 19! 😊

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/09/2019 18:24

I agree that, for an ideal dancer shape, Kelvin is overly muscled across the back of the shoulders and the upper arms. It’s not that he has a bad body shape it’s just that when he’s dancing it makes his upper spine appear to be curved forward and that’s not going to be a good look for ballroom. It made me think of a silverback gorilla dancing. Powerful, impressive and with good rhythm but still a gorilla.

Even the most muscular of the pros who spend hours in the gym have much smoother muscles with more focus on the chest and abdomen.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/09/2019 18:26

I wonder if there’s a chance of an all male final this year. Didn’t we have an all female one in the past?

QueenieMum · 22/09/2019 18:28

This is only my third full SCD series so not a long time fan but last night show was amazing. I had high hopes that Kelvin could be the new Danny and I wasn't disappointed, I just hope he continues at such a high level. I quite like the fact that he's a different body shape to other male dancers, it pushes the boundaries a bit more in the same way that someone really tall / short / overweight would. I wasn't as blown away by Michelle as the judges seem to be, is she one of the dancers they'll try and push ahead of some of the others?

I'm pretty sure James will accept criticism in the same way as everyone else, you've got to expect it on this show. He's proving that there is life after brain injury though. Having said that, I've not liked him since his trek to the pole with Ben Fogle and this won't change my opinion of him.

I wouldn't be surprised if James or Anneka get voted out first. Love Motsi!!! I know I must be getting old as it doesn't seem like 2 minutes since the start of the last series to me! Bring on the glitter!!!!!

KurriKawari · 22/09/2019 18:45

I also think if Kelvin had been in the original line up he wouldn't have been partnered with Oti. She is so much taller than him it will be interesting when they do a ballroom dance and he has to lead her in hold, when the height difference will be more noticeable.
I am so glad he's on though. We're similar ages and I've seen him grow up via Emmerdale. His acting when his on screen wife died were amazing. He seems like a genuinely lovely guy. The only other person I really "know" is Dev from Radio 1 and am so glad he's taking it seriously rather than let's play this for LOLs like Scott Mills. Dev had that same work ethic on Masterchef.

covetingthepreciousthings · 22/09/2019 19:02

He just looks very pumped and muscly lol it means exactly what I've written.

I got what you meant, I think it was the outfit, as in training in 'normal' T-shirt's, he didn't seem quite so bulky.

xsquared · 22/09/2019 19:23

I'm just surprised that his physique has been commented on as something that may be holding him back as a dancer. That's all.

Is Oti much taller than him? Off to google...

OP posts:
xsquared · 22/09/2019 19:28

Oti is 1.63m and Kelvin is 1.75m. I'd say they were fairly matched unless there needs to be a minimum height difference of half a foot.

The problem with being very muscular across the back and shoulders, like Kelvin, is that it can hamper you when it comes to ballroom. You can't get your neck and shoulders in the right position because the bulk is in the way. Austin Healey really struggled with it when he was on a few years ago...

Theromanempire · 22/09/2019 19:37

I think that once Oti works on his posture, he may look ok in ballroom in formal clothes as I think the jackets might hide the hunch a bit. I agree it's probably not the ideal shape for dancing otherwise the pros would look like that wouldn't they? Danny Mac had the ideal physique...well he was just the ideal contestant really WinkWink

Do they make the outfits in advance? So would the outfits have been made for Jamie as there is no way they would fit Kelvin Grin

covetingthepreciousthings · 22/09/2019 19:41

Danny Mac had the ideal physique...well he was just the ideal contestant really

One year.. they will do an all stars strictly series & we can all get the justice we deserve..
Ore need not apply..

xsquared · 22/09/2019 19:45

Let's hope he'll have the right posture for ballroom and that it is as good as his Latin.

OP posts:
ElspethFlashman · 22/09/2019 19:54

If there's only 10cm between them then she'll look taller than him when in 90cm heels.

I do find him very..... pumped. He's got very big bosoms. And biceps like balloons. I'm ashamed to say I was so distracted by all those bursting muscles underneath blue satin that I hadn't a notion what his feet were doing. Blush

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/09/2019 19:57

Kelvin's shape might change over the weeks. He could lengthen out those back and shoulder muscles if he changes his gym routine. We've seen other people with 'wrong' muscle tone change over the weeks, quite often some of the women have weak core muscles for instance and as that strengthens their posture improves.

#JusticeforDanny

Just marking my place on the new thread really, but thought I'd add my new hashtag.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/09/2019 21:07

Danny was robbed, but to be fair he at least partly robbed himself. He fluffed up the quickstep horribly in the final and I think let his nerves show too much for the entire evening. He was beautiful to watch though.

Grey7841 · 22/09/2019 21:16

I remember Gemma stopped her gym training when she did strictly

Hoping this shows on threads I'm on this time Grin

Theromanempire · 22/09/2019 21:35

blackamericannosugar you make a good point about Danny's quickstep but I'm not sure it would have made much difference if he had nailed it. I don't think that the voting public actually vote on the final dances...they have usually already made their mind up by then. I still maintain that Jay could have made every mistake in the world in the final and he would have won WinkWink

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 22/09/2019 21:44

Danny's fatal error was not crying. At. Every. Single. Opportunity. His attitude was too much that of a pro, I think, and thus he wasn't deemed to have had a jourrrrrrrrnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeee. We see it over and over - Stacey winning over Faye, Joe winning over Debbie, etc.

I think Caroline Flack was the only out and out ringer to win in recent years - is that right or have I forgotten someone? Jay might be deemed a ringer, I suppose, but he was so nervous and the judges hated him so much that he never strikes me as a very successful one, as ringers go!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/09/2019 21:46

I also think Faye was robbed, she did some amazing dances.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/09/2019 21:49

Faye was definitely robbed!

Theromanempire · 22/09/2019 21:54

Oh yes, Faye was robbed too! Just behind Danny in my list of injustices Grin
