So, now we battle for King's Landing and the Throne.

The penultimate episode of this most epic of tales. Can Cersei survive? Will Euron catch on and wonder how Tyrion could have known of the pregnancy? Will Arya and the Hound beat Jaime in the race south?

As ever, no leaks or spoilers please until we watch the episode live together. Our Watch begins....

Jaime and Cersei's death are a callback to how Tywin killed the Reynes of Castamere. The Reynes sheltered in their mines. Tywin blocked the entrances and diverted a river into the mines.
Karma on House Lannister.

BurntSausage · 13/05/2019 10:07

I’m not sure what to make of that. It seemed a bit unsatisfying at 3 in the morning and I’m just watching it again. Lots of questions, but some brilliant moments.

I love any scene with Peter Dinklage. The bit with Tyrion and Jaime was a tearjerker. As was the bits with Jaime and Cersei. But...

Why did Tyrion dob Varys in? It was him that told Varys in the first place!

Why did Arya go all that way just to leave? I think it’s being set up for her to kill Dany, but it just seemed too much of a turn around. I did like the scenes of her trying to escape Kings Landing though, the sense of crush and the tension were great.

The Golden Company were a fat lot of use! I really wondered if Cersei had any kind of plan at all. It went tits up very quickly.

I’m sure there were other things...

Lweji · 13/05/2019 10:10

Could Arya impersonate Jon?

ElenadeClermont · 13/05/2019 10:14

She is a bit short for that.

fancynancyclancy · 13/05/2019 10:15

Tyrion can't have bricked up the tunnels - they're how Jaime got inside!

That’s what confused me, it seemed too neat to be caused by the buildings falling down.

ElenadeClermont Karma indeed. This is why I love these threads, I learn so much!

Ayra realised revenge isn’t everything, she’s had a one track mind for so long.

fancynancyclancy · 13/05/2019 10:15

Why did Tyrion dob Varys in? It was him that told Varys in the first place!

Not sure, to protect himself long enough to free Jamie?

BeyondOverTheMoon · 13/05/2019 10:18

So betrayal for love still to come...

Jon (I guess Tyrion could also work? Though not the romantic kind of love) kills Dany because she has gone loopy, to save her from herself?

Lweji · 13/05/2019 10:19

Didn't Tyrion show up in the tunnels as Cersei and Jamie got stuck?
I thought that he'd be stuck too and die (which means there's only one spoiler of sorts in the trailer, then).
Maybe that was meant to show him on the other side, and as having blocked Cersei's escape.

Lweji · 13/05/2019 10:22

She is a bit short for that.

A) I thought it didn't matter. I don't think it's just the face. Otherwise the impersonations would never work well.

B) Jon isn't that tall either. Wink

TheLazyDuchess · 13/05/2019 10:24

I cried at Jaime and Tyrion's farewell, and I may have shouted "ring the bells!" at the TV at one point Blush. I was practically hissing at Dany (like the Mereneese did to her) the whole way through, from Vary onwards.

I loved the end, (and love the Bran warging theory too). The Stark music is so hauntingly beautiful.

ElenadeClermont · 13/05/2019 10:24

Lweji I do not understand the practicalities of the faceless men at all.
Grin

Lweji · 13/05/2019 10:24

Or... Jon kills Arya to save Dany and kidnaps her to a remote location.
Then Sansa and Tyrion take over, possibly destroying the Iron Throne in the process.

BurntSausage · 13/05/2019 10:24

Okay having watched it again it seems better the second time around. I’m just going to roll with it. I’m sure there’d be bits I’d quibble about no matter what happened. Although I still want to know who Varys was writing to and what Tyrion was thinking when he snitched 😁 I also love Jon’s ‘ohhhh shiiiiiittttt’ expressions when he realises what’s happening.

The internet in general seems to have hated it. I feel a bit for D&D, it’s impossible to please everyone, and I wonder how much of this is what GRRM had planned anyway and is down to him?

BurntSausage · 13/05/2019 10:25

The music really is excellent, I loved the combining of all the character themes over the end credits.

RussianSpamBot · 13/05/2019 10:32

Varys was writing but the secret was already out anyway wasn't it? If Sansa knows then she's going to publicise it to the rest of the north and she'll also get the Eerie onside too, they said as much last week. So I didn't really get the point of that. I could certainly see him sacrificing his life for the realm but for something more effective.

Winterfell has got to be in it again, there are too many first and second tier characters still up there. I don't think we've seen the last of Tormund either.

Dany going full on Mad Queen was fine but it's just the way so much of it was executed that was shit. Arya spends her whole life training for something and then is just like, nah. I didn't mind the Jaime story but Cersei needed to die better.

And yes there was far too much focus on dragons burning things. I know that's what war looks like/would look like with a dragon involved, but it was boring.

I think the ending might be Dany on the Iron Throne and her doing something else fucking awful. If the throne is still there, that is. As in, be careful what you wish for, just as bad as what went before etc.

fancynancyclancy · 13/05/2019 10:32

I don’t believe Jon would chose Dany over Ayra

SweetSummerchild · 13/05/2019 10:33

This is, without a doubt, GRRM’s ending. The signs have been there since book 1/season 1. Fans have chosen to ignore them because of her ‘good deeds’ and ‘good intentions’.

Varys’ line about the gods flipping a coin when a Targ is born is straight from the book.

Then there’s the House of the Undyng ‘three fires’ she will likght - one for life, one for death and one to love.

SweetSummerchild · 13/05/2019 10:34

Looks like we are heading back for Jon being Azor Ahai and Dany being Nissa Nissa. This time the Long Night is the reign of the dragon-queen.

Xyzzzzz · 13/05/2019 10:38

Bit annoyed there making Dany the mad queen but not surprised. I guess Jon will kill her and I can see Sansa on the throne. As Jon doesn’t want it. Wouldn’t be surprised if Tyrion dies.

Cersei’s death was shockingly bad I really wanted Jaime or Arya to kill her.

fancynancyclancy · 13/05/2019 10:38

See for me Ayra became an assassin to survive & revenge was her motivation. She could have killed Cersai but she would die in the process & I think Sandor made her question it. She’s worked so hard to survive, what’s the point in dying when Cersai will die anyway.

BeyondOverTheMoon · 13/05/2019 10:42

Dany can't end up on the throne, her house of the undying vision had the throne covered in ASH (not snow) - check, but then she got within reach of it and couldn't touch it. So she is now within reach of the throne - having razed KL to the ground - but will not rule.

Ah yes light a fire TO love, I remember now Grin

SweetSummerchild · 13/05/2019 10:42

Now I’m just waiting for all those theories that Arya is a secret Targ becasue she was immune to fire (rolls eyes).

fancynancyclancy · 13/05/2019 10:43

Cersei needed to die better Shr deserved to be eaten slowly by Drogan. I did feel sorry for her though, I guess that’s testament to how good an actress LH is.

I think Bron may turn up again.

Pinkkahori · 13/05/2019 10:45

Not sure how I feel yet. I thought Cersei would know Tyrion would want to protect the innocent and would ring the bell in a fake surrender and lure them into a trap. Disappointed that she had no great plan.
