GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8. Possible spoilers

Given we are only a week away from the final season, I thought we should have a shiny new thread to discuss the episodes as they are broadcast.

Anyone else going to be starting their watch at 2 am on Monday 15th?

I've watched the trailers and teasers dozens of times, and I am READY!

I have a theory that the Battle for Winterfell in Ep 3 will be lost, and they will have to move south, re assemble at Dragonstone or Kings Landing. After all, here are three episodes to fill after that!

I’ve just watched the episode again and thought it was interesting that when Sam is talking about it’s our memories and lives that makes us, the camera pans to aria’s face and she looks a little upset/thoughtful
I wonder if that’s what made her go and reconnect to the hound and then decide to jump
on Gendry, realising that a lot of her memories of recent years aren’t how she wants to think of the sum of her life
new appreciation for Jon’s incredulous expression after Dany says he would have a claim to the throne
And the ending is brilliant- the singing with everyone taking their places. I hope the next episode is as epic as it’s built up to be.

I’d actually be fascinated to see Cersei turned into a white walker. Or a Wight.. I get confused between the two!

Lweji · 23/04/2019 15:18

Cersei is at this point a classic short-sighted politician.

Yes, and she'll get to fight a dragon and the NK on her own.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 23/04/2019 16:01

So many possibilities for the coming episodes! Definitely something to worry about in the crypt. I was wo dering about the 'freshest' body in the crypt, so thanks for the reminder, I wouldn't have thought Ned, Caitlen or Rob's bodies made it back?? Anyone know otherwise?

I liked that Arya and Gendry got together, I agree a bit uncomfortable though, but for me it was more like watching your little sister. No reason why not, but just not what you want to think about!

GrimDamnFanjo · 23/04/2019 16:16

Can anyone remember the vision we saw in Series 2? Snow on the Iron Throne etc?
At the time I thought it was forshadowing Dany's death.

yumyumpoppycat · 23/04/2019 16:25

Completely agree with bigsexy's thought re Gendry and arya. Seemed pretty normal and not disturbing by Game of thrones standards.

I liked that episode a lot and love reading all the theories on here!

ppppppickupapenguin · 23/04/2019 16:26

The winter is coming app has broken down the trailer for episode 3 frame by frame.

Assembled on the battlefield, the Unsullied have formed up to face the enemy.

Another angle of the Unsullied ranks, featuring catapults and trebuchets.

Grey Worm stands in the front ranks, looking grim as he dons his helmet. We hear Sansa in voiceover. “The most heroic thing we can do now, is look the truth in the face.”

Daenerys and Jon Snow watch the defense of Winterfell from an elevated position. If the battle is about to begin, it’s odd that these two aren’t down there in the thick of it.

Samwell Tarly watches the Unsullied marching past. The editing pace picks up, faster and faster.
Sansa and Arya observe from the Winterfell ramparts. I don’t think they’ve had a scene together so far this season.

Ser Davos strides along the battlements.

An anxious Varys huddles with the women and children in the Winterfell crypts.

Tyrion turns.

Jorah steels himself. Now armed with Heartsbane, you know the dishonored night is ready to honor the Mormont family legacy on the battlefield.

Fade to black. “The Night King is coming,” we hear Jon say, just as we fade up on him looking overwhelmed in a vortex of falling snow.

A series of rapid cuts follow. First we see the Unsullied, Northern Infantry and Dothraki cavalry assembled before the walls and towers of Winterfell. We hope the Dothraki have vests or something. Going topless up here is an invitation to frostbite.

Again we see Arya running through the halls of the castle. Have the dead managed to sneak inside?

The Unsullied advance.

Beric Dondarrion and the Hound search for the enemy, apparently inside Winterfell. The Hound snaps his head around.

Of course, the dragons are engaged. We see Dany riding Drogon through the storm. Are we going to see a violent dogfight between them and the Night King aboard wight-Viserion?

The Unsullied lock their spears into battle mode.

Theon readies a fire arrow in the godswood, likely in defense of Bran.

Jon draws Longclaw. He appears to be in the godswood, too. He looks dismayed, as if he’s witnessed something heartbreaking…

Fade to black, then fade up on Daenerys and Jon. “The dead are already here,” she says. Is she referring to the Night King raising the dead from the Winterfell crypts? If so, that would explain why Arya looks so terrified, and what the Hound and Beric are dealing with.

The Night King’s army advances in the darkness.

Brienne of Tarth, Daenerys’ left wing commander, stands in front of her troops with Jaime Lannister ready at her right side.

Close up of Brienne as she bellows, “Stand your ground!”

There we have it. Hold fast, Thrones fans. A lot of blood is about to be spilled in the winter snow.

Visions in the House of the Undying (cut and pasted from a Wiki of Fire & Ice)

I was excited by the stone dragon vision and the (Night King?) with blue eyes casting no shadow and holding a red sword...

The warlock Pyat Pree persuades Daenerys Targaryen to seek answers in the House of the Undying. Inside, she passes through many rooms containing visions before she reaches the chamber of the Undying.[2]

A beautiful, naked woman being ravished by four little men who resemble the dwarf servitor.
A feast of slaughtered corpses holding cups, spoons, and food, with a dead man with a wolf's head sitting on a throne wearing an iron crown, apparently foreshadowing the Red Wedding.
Daenerys' childhood home with the red door in Braavos.
A throne room with dragon skulls on the walls where a king resembling Aerys II Targaryen sits on a barbed throne and appears to give the order to burn the Red Keep during the Sack of King's Landing.
A room where a silver-haired man (presumably Rhaegar Targaryen) names his son Aegon, says the child is "the prince that was promised", then plays a harp.
A "splendor of wizards" who falsely claim to be the Undying of Qarth and offer to teach Daenerys the secret speech of dragonkind.
Upon reaching the chamber of the Undying, Daenerys is spoken to in a barely perceptible whisper. The Undying call her "mother of dragons" and "child of three" and tell her some prophesies, saying "three fires must you light... one for life and one for death and one to love... three mounts must you ride... one to bed and one to dread and one to love... three treasons will you know... once for blood and once for gold and once for love..."

The Undying show Daenerys many more visions before attacking her and being slain by Drogon[2]:

Viserys Targaryen's gruesome death.
A tall lord with copper-skin and silver-gold hair beneath a banner of a fiery stallion, with a burning city in the background (this may be a glimpse at what Rhaego's future would have been).
A dying prince (likely Rhaegar Targaryen) mutters a woman's name with his last breath, rubies flying from his chest.
A blue-eyed king who casts no shadow (possibly Stannis Baratheon) raises a red sword in his hand.
A cloth dragon sways on poles amidst a cheering crowd.
A great stone beast takes wing from a smoking tower, breathing shadows.
Daenerys's silver trots through grass to a darkling stream under a sea of stars.
A corpse standing at the prow of a ship with bright eyes and grey smiling lips.
A blue flower growing from a chink in a wall of ice, filling the air with sweetness. (This could indicate Jon Snow's true parentage and potential kinship to Daenerys)

DryHeave · 23/04/2019 16:55

Arya to take NK’s face and command all wights to fall. (Please.)

SweetSummerchild · 23/04/2019 17:10

To expand on what Middleoftheroad said, her visions are grouped into threes. The first three are accompanied by the words “Mother of dragons, daughter of death”, the seconds three by “Mother of dragons, slayer of lies”, and the last three by “Mother of dragons, bride of fire”. I’m recalling this from memory, so I may have some of this wrong.

This is books only. In the show she is seen a vision of walking into a ruined throne room filling up with snow. She also walks through the snow and sees Drogo with their baby (I think it was in a tent). I can’t remember if it was implied to be beyond the wall.

Middleoftheroad · 23/04/2019 17:31

You're right Sweet the show's visions are completely different and do feature a baby.

The throne room one always stood out for me when I watched the show. I found some more detail here:

wikiofthrones.com/16404/thoughts-daenerys-visions-in-house-of-undying/

ppppppickupapenguin · 23/04/2019 17:33

SweetSummerChild it was definitely beyond the wall.

Aberforthsgoat · 23/04/2019 17:33

Thanks for that penguin interesting. I am definitely scared for next week. I’m torn between longing for it to get here and not be able to contemplate watching when we know it’s going to be carnage!

SweetSummerchild · 23/04/2019 17:53

I always wondered whether in the vision it was snow falling on the iron throne or ash...

Andonandonan · 23/04/2019 19:28

I really think Tyrion is going to die. Possibly using something he’s found out from his chat with Bran to save everyone else in the crypts heroically?

There were at least 3 things he said yesterday that foreshadowed his death though. One was the ‘someone else will be wearing this badge (hand of the king)’. I can’t remember the others but DH & I both picked up on them during the episode.

Aberforthsgoat · 23/04/2019 19:33

He said something about when he was dead he was going to march to kings landing I think

OneInAMillionYou · 23/04/2019 20:00

Penguin thank you.

I find these trailers so dark, it's hard to see and hear what is being said.

The Night King and Bran in the Godswood will be epic. That sacred space for the Starks being invaded by death.

I was wondering about Uncle Benjen. He gave Jon his horse to escape and was then overwhelmed by the army. Might we see him fighting for NK?

I am utterly convinced that some previously beloved characters will turn up fighting for the NK. I think Rickon is a dead cert. Surely Arya couldn't be so scared by anyone else except maybe Jaquen?

Oh I can't wait and yet I know the sadness will be overwhelming. Is it too much to hope that Dani gets killed off first?

sashh · 23/04/2019 20:01

Just one thing to add.

Didn't anyone else notice it wasn't actually Masie? It was her back but it was mostly body double.

As a 5ft 0 woman I can identify with people thinking you are younger. The first time I was asked for ID to buy alcohol I was in my thirties.

Giggorata · 23/04/2019 20:13

*When Melisande returns, she could help by bringing the Night King back to life

Worst case, it would be easier to kill him. And he wouldn't have any powers, probably.*

That's what I meant, Lewji, if she brings him back to life, he will just be human again, with no special powers.
Possibly all the wights will cease to be animate, or he won't be able to raise any more dead.
His agenda may completely change, as he will be one of the living. Or they can just chop his head off...

Aberforthsgoat · 23/04/2019 21:16

Apparently Maisie said it was her in an interview @sashh but I thought the same as you!

@oneinamillionyou I wonder if Arya is running from someone who is not yet even dead.. who gets raised by the NK? Although I don’t know how that works, can he raise them immediately? I suppose he did at hard home

I’m kind of hoping dany goes first too. Now we know Jon can ride dragons and is a targ she almost seems irrelevant Shock

I’m still seeing people root for a Sansa Jon marriage at the end of it all online, I don’t see it!
Mind you there’s a lot of people who want Sansa and the hound together as well!

Holidayshopping · 23/04/2019 21:22

The first time I was asked for ID to buy alcohol I was in my thirties

Were you not asked for ID in your teens or twenties?

SweetSummerchild · 23/04/2019 21:31

Mind you there’s a lot of people who want Sansa and the hound together as well!

She probably has a bit of a teenage crush on him in the books, but they’ve never really done it in the show (for quite obvious reasons). The two characters are unlikely to ever meet again in the books, so it’s probably just there to show that her tastes in men are evolving beyond obsessions over the boy-band Loras Tyrell type that she is famous for.

Jon and Sansa could make a political marriage at the end of the show (Jon and Arya were supposed to marry according to the early outline that GRRM wrote). I think it is more likely that she won’t marry anyone, but that would be problematic for leadership in a feudal society obsessed with producing heirs.

Aberforthsgoat · 23/04/2019 21:34

@sweetsummerchild true - and he was quite nice to her in the show, in his own way. I think he had a soft spot for her but not in that way
Could you imagine arya’s Reaction if san-san (cringe - this is how it is known) happened?!

SweetSummerchild · 23/04/2019 21:44

@Aberforthsgoat but he did include the line “I should have fucked her bloody” about Sansa in his deathbed confession to Arya in season 4 (albeit a very truncated version of his book lines). However, it seems there would be very little need to discuss any of this any more - I don’t think Sansa and Sandor have been onscreen together this season.

Again, in the book I think he did have a thing for her in that way. Then again, the book and show Hounds are totally different beasts (no pun intended).

DobbysLeftSock · 23/04/2019 21:55

Aberforthsgoat best username ever.

Aberforthsgoat · 23/04/2019 22:14

@dobbysleftsock why thank you takes goatly bow I’m quite fond of yours too Grin

@sweetsummerchild they did but I took it as more him desperately trying to make Arya angry enough to kill him instead of leaving him for dead. When he told her about the incident previously he just referred to saving Sansa, he only got grim about it when he thought he was dying and was trying to provoke her. but you’re absolutely right it’s not going to happen - I think it must stem from the books like you say, and the odd scene where he was kind to her. Jon and Sansa is more likely than that pairing I reckon, and I don’t think it’s all that likely either!

Love a good game of thrones thread it’s always so interesting to read the opinions of other posters, they always make me think or realise I’ve missed things.

Oh to be able to create such a multilayered story.
