Married At First Sight- is this for real?

This can't be real, surely? Who would be insane enough? I've never seen the show, but do they explain if it's actually an official marriage? I would have thought that the whole concept goes against the solemn nature of the legal contract.

I think some people hate being single, maybe haven't gotten on with online dating and are open to trying something else.

BridlingtonSand · 20/03/2019 21:04

I hope that they have more than one couple this series.

thenightsky · 20/03/2019 21:07

Didn't they have two or three couples on the last series? I cannot remember, but I don't think any of them stayed together did they?

IStillMissBlockbuster · 20/03/2019 21:11

Oh yay, thanks for letting me know that it is back on. This programme is ridiculous, i have watched a couple of series and I don't think things ever work out long term for the couples. And I never understand because they get married, then the programme goes on about having 6 weeks or something to decide if they want to stay married. Could it be an anulment rule I wonder? I don't know.

BridlingtonSand · 20/03/2019 21:12

I seem to remember a series where there was just one couple. Very likely I've missed a series or two.

So far these all seem likeable people.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/03/2019 21:13

I initially wondered if it was legal but it's just an arranged marriage really and arranged marriages aren't illegal only forced marriage.

Honeyroar · 20/03/2019 21:13

Last year their scientific experiments matched someone with a dog with a non dog lover, a non scientist or dog lover could see from the start that it was guaranteed to fail. The participants seemed pretty naive.

ssd · 20/03/2019 21:14

They are really dragging the bottom of the barrel with this.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 20/03/2019 21:14

It is a real, legally binding marriage, although I believe each person's assets are protected. I have watched the previous two series and not one couple stayed together long term.
Personally I don't think they have enough applicants to match couples properly and the methods used to matching them seems a bit odd. Last series they put a dog owner with a woman who seemed to hate pets!
Also you can't predict chemistry. Many couples irl wouldn't match 'on paper' but are utterly right for each other.

BridlingtonSand · 20/03/2019 21:14

As a parent I think I'd be quite disappointed my child was doing this.

BridlingtonSand · 20/03/2019 21:15

Ok, I'm going off Jonathan saying "mother" a lot. Possibly just nervous.

thenightsky · 20/03/2019 21:16

Jonathan's mother-in-law to be.... 'I hope he's not an idiot'. Well I think that's one hope that won't come true having seen what we have of him so far. Grin

chickchickchickchickenpox · 20/03/2019 21:17

I think I remember that a matched pair from a previous series backed out before getting married/meeting (or at least one person from the matched pair did) and they met away from the show and became a couple. No idea if they're still together though.

Cattenberg · 20/03/2019 21:20

I didn’t like it when one of the matchmakers was talking about how it’s all about what each person brings to the table. “She brings youth and beauty, he brings a good income and a house” (might not be an exact quote).

Bleurgh.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 20/03/2019 21:27

I'm strangely drawn to this program but it's a very strange concept...why would anyone do this?

thenightsky · 20/03/2019 21:28

Cattenberg That made me uncomfortable too. Urgh.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 20/03/2019 21:28

Jenga??

HairyToity · 20/03/2019 21:30

I don't think this couple are suited. Hope I'm wrong.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 20/03/2019 21:31

I don't think any of them take it at all seriously, there's obviously an easy out clause so it's really just a free party and 15 minutes of mediocrity.

HairyToity · 20/03/2019 21:31

A one man stag do? I love it!

NicoAndTheNiners · 20/03/2019 21:31

I'm a little suspicious of a guy who's stag night is him and a load of women. No male friends?

NicoAndTheNiners · 20/03/2019 21:32

He does seem nice and I get I'm being judgemental.

Ratatouille76 · 20/03/2019 21:33

Steph and Jonathan are so clearly a bad match.

BridlingtonSand · 20/03/2019 21:34

I get I'm being judgemental

You're not the only one.

BridlingtonSand · 20/03/2019 21:35

(I mean, I'm being judgemental about that stag do too).
