Married At First Sight- is this for real?

This can't be real, surely? Who would be insane enough? I've never seen the show, but do they explain if it's actually an official marriage? I would have thought that the whole concept goes against the solemn nature of the legal contract.

As far as google can suggest there have been no success stories on the UK one

Nope. And you could tell from the off with all of them. The ones who have some sexual chemistry limp on for a few months, making a half-hearted attempt at a marriage but it's always doomed. It's usually the women who plug away at it for a bit longer too.

unique1986 · 22/03/2019 13:07

Have they had gay couples too?
Surprised channel 4 didn't throw in one gay or lesbian couple this series.

PaintingOwls · 23/03/2019 10:58

Bahhhhhumbug

Curious to know how you can "fix" short teeth?

SimonJT · 23/03/2019 11:02

Bit of a crazy concept, we watched one of them, but found it to be quite boring.

ooooohbetty · 23/03/2019 11:58

@Bahhhhhumbug how much do a few veneers cost? I thought they ran into thousands?

theredjellybean · 23/03/2019 18:48

Why the actual feck would you match a bloke with only female friends with a girl with big trust issues??
Well I'd hazard a guess to make train crash TV... If they perfectly match, fall in love and it goes smoothly rather dull tv
I think they deliberately match people who may scientifically match but have some life experiences that will be trigger or flash points. So there are ishooos

Actually I think he'd be less likely to cheat, it's the ones who are always Out With The Lads who are more often in a position to cheat. Why would the women who have been friends with someone like Jonathan suddenly decide to pounce on him just because he got married?

theredjellybean · 23/03/2019 21:32

Good point but it wasn't the possibility of him cheating or whether he is or isn't faithful type I just think she would have a really hard time trusting him

RaspberryBubblegum · 23/03/2019 21:46

If I remember rightly it's not real. The marriage ceremony at the beginning is not legally binding, just a set up wedding, no contracts are actually signed. It is only at the end of the journey they are asked if they would like to make it legal or to separate. Didn't stop me binge watching all of them when my first was born though 😂

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/03/2019 22:15

Just caught up with this tonight..

Jonathan I'm sure they said he'd had 6 serious relationships & I think his stag do count was 6 women.. imagine if they were all his ex's!

Hazlenutpie · 23/03/2019 23:00

I love this show, I find it compelling to watch but at the same time car crash TV.

Flaverings · 24/03/2019 08:13

In the first series at least they were true marriage ceremonies.

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/03/2019 08:20

The people in this most recent episode were telling their relatives it was a real, legal marriage. I always got the impression it was legally binding from the ceremony onwards.

mydogisthebest · 24/03/2019 09:12

I am pretty sure it is a legal and binding marriage. That is why they use a real Registrar.

I said in my previous post that I don't understand why the Registrar agrees to it. She, of all people, should believe in the value of marriage. It is not for some cheap thrill tv programme.

If it doesn't work out and so far none of the marriages have, those couples are then divorced with a failed marriage behind them. Surely if they had problems finding someone in the first place they will have even more problem then?

I would have hesitated about dating someone who was divorced but certainly married and divorced in such a short time would be a definite no from me

RaspberryBubblegum · 24/03/2019 12:49

Ahh it's not legally binding in the Australian version but it is in the UK. My bad!

JaneJeffer · 26/03/2019 16:41

Finally caught up. If I just met Jonathan and didn't know he was marrying a woman I would assume he was gay.

RomanyQueen1 · 26/03/2019 16:44

This was an old programme started years ago and just come back.
I always found it interesting how well suited they looked, far more than many people who've been together for years.
I think the psychological profiling they do finds perfect matches, perhaps a lot of unhappy couples divorcing should try this approach next time.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 26/03/2019 16:53

They got the wrong matches last series too, if they’d matched Richard and Stephanie I think they might have gone the course.

Stephanie and Richard knew what they were doing and took it seriously but Ben was just on the rebound and Harriet has created the fictional perfect man so was never going to be happy.

JaneJeffer · 26/03/2019 17:03

I liked the quirky couple who gave it a good go but one of them lived in London and the other on the south coast so it was difficult. Can't remember which series or their names!

IStillMissBlockbuster · 26/03/2019 17:35

Yeah, he was a train driver right? I think it was the last series.

showmethegin · 27/03/2019 21:09

Stephanie is definitely not keen on Jonathan, it's so obvious!

MyGastIsFlabbered · 27/03/2019 21:25

Yeah she really doesn't fancy him does she

nowifi · 27/03/2019 21:26

Yeah she's not into him

wendz86 · 27/03/2019 21:26

She's definitely not that keen, it's so awkward.

showmethegin · 27/03/2019 21:33

She constantly looks like she's on a really terrible date!
