Seeing that we are going to be in need of a third thread... My title makes no sense, does it? I had a funny one in mind earlier but it escapes me now. Should have used hot glue gun to make it stick.

Jen liked my comment ,"the wrong person went" on her insta

dontcallmelen · 27/03/2019 12:17

Hmmm well that was a funny ol one, Juliette yellow top was lovely & Ricarrdo was soo intricate, but I think a pale pink or pale blue would have stood out more, Jens top looked a bit of a mess which was a shame as I liked the shape of it, Leah’s I thought was a bit odd at the back & didn’t fit properly, dunno I think probably Jen going home was just about the right decision.

JasperRising · 27/03/2019 12:38

I wasn't that keen on the yellow top Blush I like the sleeves and the length but I thought it looked a bit of an odd shape round the spiral - plus my eyes kept being drawn to the centre of the spiral even once she'd covered the hole. I liked Riccardo's top as an exercise in origami and construction but I wouldn't wear it myself.

DarlingNikita · 27/03/2019 12:42

Leah's was a nice top, but the origami bits were embellishments rather than structural I thought.

Completely agree. And I also agree with a pp that it was bordering on cheating getting someone else to make a pattern for her.

Riccardo deserved GOTW. It was amazing, hugely conceptual and original and beautiful, appropriate fabric.

Leah's transformation dress was HIDEOUS, lumpy and unflattering and very frumpy with those pleats. Riccardo's was clever and original. He was robbed.

Leah's been dodging a bullet every week and this was the biggest one she's dodged yet. I felt for Jen; she's clearly a better sewer than Leah, she just made some bad choices and had some bad luck.

However, I like her a bit less for liking Cocolepew's Insta comment. That's a bit graceless and not very classy IMO.

Riccardo for the win!

DarlingNikita · 27/03/2019 12:52

Also meant to say Juliette's yellow top was excellent –beautiful colour, great origami structure, lovely sleeves. It was close for me between hers and Riccardo's, but in the end I thought Riccardo had been overlooked/robbed a few too many times. Wonder if the judges thought so too!

Cocolepew · 27/03/2019 13:30

Tbf I did also say I was sorry to her go.

DarlingNikita · 27/03/2019 13:38

Tbf I did also say I was sorry to her go.

Let's hope she was 'liking' that bit then Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/03/2019 13:51

Just caught up.

I would really like a pair of the dhoti trousers.

I thought Juliette's origami top was best and should have been GOTW. Riccardo's was too papery looking and didn't look like real clothes - it would definitely only survive being worn once.

Have always thought Riccardo or Juliette to win though.

MinesaPinot · 27/03/2019 14:11

Wading into the mix here.

I think Leah has been riding by the seat of her pants for the last few weeks but always seems to pull something out of the bag to save herself. I loved her top, that pleating down the front was great and I loved the colourway. If I saw that in a shop I'd definitely buy it (but finished and fitting properly of course). I also though her challenge was well done, I really liked the way she got the placement down the side.

I really liked Juliette's yellow top although I couldn't help zooming in on the front of the rose, even when she covered the hole up, but for me Riccardo's top was a thing of beauty. I could see that in one of the very expensive shops in London, where you'd pick it up, think 'that's beautiful but who could wear it' and then faint at the price.

Overall I do think Jen was the right person to go. She had a bit of a mare with the challenge and her top at the end was a Hot Mess as one of my friends would say. And I didn't like her coat last week either.

Me and DH are championing Riccardo to win.

SileneOliveira · 27/03/2019 16:39

I think the Leah Vs Jen thing boils down to what the Bee is really about - is it about finding the best person at sewing, or the best clothes designer?

Jen undoubtedly had the most sewing skills. Every week she did well on the pattern challenge. Leah on the other hand - her trousers last night were hopeless compared with the others. Leah though has more design flair and did better on the transformation challenges - Jen had the technical skills but not the vision and creativity.

Also agree that Leah delegating making a pattern to "my architects" was just wrong.

In the final it will be between Riccardo and Juliet and tbh I don't care which one wins, they're both great. As long as it's not Leah.

SoupDragon · 27/03/2019 16:48

I don't see the problem with the architects drawing up the pattern to Leah's spec.

DolorestheNewt · 27/03/2019 16:56

Spot on, SileneOliveira - Jen is technically great, but her talent for design is a bit lacking. Even her M2M tracksuit that won GOTW (IIRC) was not imaginative, though it was beautifully made.

floribunda18 · 27/03/2019 17:00

I don't think the decision was fair even just based on one week. Jen's trousers were perfect in the first challenge, and nothing Leah made was without errors.

floribunda18 · 27/03/2019 17:07

I don't think Leah has much design ability, or if she has it is hit and miss. She seems to make a lot of polkadot and monochrome garments.

The green and pink number she made in the conversion challenge was appalling, I can't understand why it won. Juliette's was beautiful.

SoupDragon · 27/03/2019 17:12

Jen came bottom in two out of the three challenges.

DarlingNikita · 27/03/2019 17:21

Soup, the others devised their own patterns, including Jen's complicated 'snake' one. By getting someone else to do hers, Leah didn't have to exercise those skills.

SileneOliveira · 27/03/2019 17:27

Also, I think the amount of origami in Leah's compared to the other three was minimal.

She had wee silly folded bow things down the front and that sticky up collar.

Jen's entire top was folded from one piece, Juliet had the whirl thing and Riccardo's was like those books cut into weird shapes. All three followed the brief much better, even though the execution was shaky on Jen's.

On a separate note though, isn't Joe brilliant? I didn't think anyone could step into Claudia's shoes but he has done so amazingly well.

JasperRising · 27/03/2019 17:29

I'm a bit in the shelf over Leah getting someone else to draft the pattern. I'm sure there have been made to measure challenges in other series where some contestants drafted their own patterns whilst others used shop bought patterns altered for their models - that is basically what Leah did (just you can't buy off the shelf origami patterns). And she did have the vision of what she wanted the finished garment to look like. Personally there is no way I could have drafted my own pattern for that challenge - my brain just can't translate 3D into a flat 2D pattern like that.

JasperRising · 27/03/2019 17:30

I do agree that Leah's was a very simple design though! Maybe if the collar had actually stayed opened up like a vertical shoulder ruff it would have seemed more origami.

SoupDragon · 27/03/2019 17:32

others devised their own patterns

And in previous weeks, others have just used commercial patterns. I really don't see the issue. She designed it.

Instructions for a spiral bodice like Juliette's, dated 2016

m.youtube.com/watch?v=zB8_IFTqTnk

DarlingNikita · 27/03/2019 17:41

The issue for me is in the judging. I think the judges should have taken into consideration the work and skill the others put into drafting their own.

JasperRising · 27/03/2019 17:44

I think that the comes back to SileneOliveira question about what the sewing bee is about. I'd it about designing or sewing because if it is seeing then arguably you should do better for executing a technically perfect garment from a pattern than making a self drafted garment with errors.

On another notes does anyone remember the name of the contestant in a previous series who free hand drafted their designs?

SoupDragon · 27/03/2019 17:50

Was it Chinelo?
