Seeing that we are going to be in need of a third thread... My title makes no sense, does it? I had a funny one in mind earlier but it escapes me now. Should have used hot glue gun to make it stick.

I thought it was a good fit on the model and supposed to be full above and below the belt to give a cinched-in, hourglass look. It wasn't too baggy on the fitted bit, across the shoulders. It's definitely a look that only really works for the very slim and small waisted, a chubby person would look like the Michelin man in that. If it hadn't been a belted design then it would have need to be more slimline in order not to swamp the model.

SoMuchToBits · 20/03/2019 14:32

Hello Waspies! Sorry I couldn't join you last night, although I was watching. I was so tired after my 12 and a half hour shift on my feet all day, that there's no way I could concentrate on putting any words together! In fact I fell sleep on the sofa before the end of the programme and had to rewind to see the end! Blush

I also liked all the ticking clothes, and thought it was quite hard to choose between them. I wasn't very inspired by the linen jacket though. It's a shame Janet has gone, although she didn't finish her coat. I bet the others will miss her.

PrivateIsles · 20/03/2019 14:56

Riccardo's coat was beautiful. How they could even mention that linen jacket in the same breath as a possible GOTW contender I don't know.

BonnesVacances · 20/03/2019 15:22

I've had my eye on Riccardo since the beginning. He's always looked like he knows what he's doing, ie professional, and is happiest fitting to the mannequin/model than following a pattern.

Btw his model doesn't speak the same language as him. The first time they met he said in Italian that he didn't speak Spanish, but they will be able to understand each other in their mother tongues.

His coat was beautiful. I hope the model was able to keep it for herself.

PrivateIsles · 20/03/2019 15:34

Yes I agree with that - and I think his clothes are the most wearable ok maybe not the ticking knickerbockers of all the contestants - perhaps that's why, because he works with the wearer in mind rather than focus on the pattern?

SoupDragon · 20/03/2019 16:18

did nobody else think it was just too big for the model?

I disliked it for that reason. I didn't like the way it looked bulky (not hourglass) above and below the tight belt.

DarlingNikita · 20/03/2019 16:27

I didn't think it was too big, or bulky. It's a wool winter coat, it's going to have some substance to it. I'd wear it, personally.

SoupDragon · 20/03/2019 16:36

There's a difference between substance and a huge bunch of fabric that appears when the belt is tight. I simply didn't like it.

PrivateIsles · 20/03/2019 16:42

I didn't think the coat looked big, but will keep a close eye on it when I re-watch!

Although - whenever my mum took me coat shopping when I was a kid, she always said winter coats need a bit of room in them - so you can fit your jumper on underneath. Maybe Riccardo was just thinking of the climate?!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/03/2019 16:50

Obviously very much personal preference on the fit of coats then.

DarlingNikita · 20/03/2019 16:56

I agree with Private; I've been fooled before by nice slim coats that I've then had to stuff myself into with a winter jumper on.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/03/2019 17:00

Plus there's no stretch in a wool coat so you need to have enough freedom of movement to drive a car or hold the high bar on the tube.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/03/2019 18:41

Julette's coat was an utter disaster.

How on Earth did they let her stay?

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/03/2019 19:34

*Julette's coat was an utter disaster.

How on Earth did they let her stay?*
Because she finished it?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/03/2019 19:36

Finished or not, it was the worst coat.

Sorry.

SoupDragon · 20/03/2019 19:48

How on Earth did they let her stay?

Because Janet stuffed up the other two challenges more.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/03/2019 20:03

I didn't really like Janet's coat either.

2rebecca · 20/03/2019 21:03

Just watched it, shame Janet's gone. She maybe should have been concentrated more on her own stuff and then she could have spent more time on her sleeves. I didn't like her star dress either. Ricardo did brilliantly in the time with that coat

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/03/2019 21:10

I'm getting the impression that Riccardo has practised his patterns more than the others. I don't know whether Juliette had already made that coat before the show, but it didn't look like it if she had. She seemed really unfamiliar with the pattern and the fitting of it. Whereas Riccardo was really in control of his time and wasn't flustered about which piece was which and I reckon that he had probably made that pattern twice beforehand.

I don't know how much time they have to prepare before the series, but since they get to chose their own patterns for the third task why wouldn't you make it a couple of times at least?

Frenchfancy · 20/03/2019 21:21

I guess if you think you will be out by week 3 then you don't pay too much attention to the later challenges, especially if you have a life and children etc. Making a coat is a big investment in time and money. I'm not at all surprised that Juliette didn't practice.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/03/2019 21:24

You don't need to make it in the original fabric. You can do a toile and practice the details on scraps.

PrivateIsles · 20/03/2019 21:49

Do you think they're given a budget for practice garments? It seems a bit unfair if not. Although yes you probably wouldn't practice with Harris Tweed itself.

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/03/2019 07:26

I doubt if they get a budget for practice stuff. My DGS was on junior Masterchef and had to pay for all that.

SoupDragon · 21/03/2019 07:30

I thought I once read that they get a budget for the final fabric - maybe in a interview with a contestant? For some reason I think it was with whoever made the Chanel style jacket in pink (maybe pink tweed?) in a previous series.

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/03/2019 08:31

I had a quick search and can't find anything about Sewing Bee although this link is about Bake Off (Channel 4, I know, but I expect it was the same on BBC). The format is similar to Sewing Bee.
