Can you believe we are on thread 50! This is for all discussions on the BBC series Our Girl and any possible future series. Reference to Captain James is particularly welcome.

eejit have you recognised any of the actors yet, apart from Robson and Jerome that is. I think there were 6 in that first episode I knew and a further 2 later in the series. I'm quite looking forward to it but not sure I'll have anything too deep thinking to impart. Maybe the odd similarity with OG? No Elvis lookalikes so far.....

Indeed! I kept asking myself 'Who's that again? What else was he in?' and I'll work properly through the cast list when I have the time (unless others can remind me ...)

Magi84 · 09/01/2019 07:38

I recognised several eejit (mind you as I've got carried away with it a bit and and am now up to episode 1 of series 3 I've forgotten already some of the things they were in that I've seen in the past). One I can identify for you definitely is William Gannimara playing the guy who was going to run of with the Major's wife, well he played the head pathologist "Leo" in Silent Witness.

Magi84 · 09/01/2019 08:35

Sorry eejit just realised he's not in it till episode 2. I knew it was an early one but as you've only watched episode 1 I'm only confusing things here!😱

Ilovelblue · 09/01/2019 08:50

If you watch Call the Midwife, the woman who plays Mrs Buckle in it appears in Soldier Soldier as the pregnant wife of one of tbe corporals and is in all 6 episodes of series 1. Lt Pascoe was also a surgeon in Holby (and hadn't weathered too well in the looks department).

My series 2 DVD has just arrived! You are ahead of me Magi though.

You inspired me. I watched season 6 on UK TV Drama over holidays. Never did watch 6 & 7 when it was on originally. Not sure why. Away at Uni or something. I'm working through series 7 now.

It's actually good if you can get passed the dated clothes, cars, etc.

My teenager is amused by the fashion and hair choices. Makes these faces quite a lot =>HmmShockwhen watching.

Been amusing myself recognising where they filmed as we used to live near Aldershot a long, long time ago.

BBC should look at doing a refresh version.

I'm quite enjoying some of the officer characters with similar hero hair to CJ.

Ilovelblue · 09/01/2019 20:43

I think I am more invested in 30 year old episodes of Soldier Soldier than I was in the whole of the last series of OG. I am halfway through series 2 now! Addictive or what?

OP posts:
eejittwo · 09/01/2019 21:37

I've just watched the one episode so far, ilove, but I know the feeling. I binge-watched all fourteen episodes of SHARPE last year and a couple of years previously tracked down as many episodes of BERGERAC as I could.

Magi84 · 09/01/2019 21:42

I know ILove I am well into series 3 now and keep telling myself to ease off a bit, but then I think oh just one more episode etc. And so it goes on. Really enjoying it I must say, dated or not. The characters seem so real in comparison to much of what we had to put up with in the latter parts of OG. Makes you realise how well OG started off to capture our interest so fully and how disappointing it became.

Am wondering if Soldier Soldier will hold up well as seven series does seem a lot and some of them have 13 episodes!

Ilovelblue · 09/01/2019 21:59

I've not yet found anyone to rival CJ or Elvis in the looks stakes. I do remember when it was on originally having quite a crush on one of the officers but I can only think he must have been in one of the later series as none of them are floating my boat so to speak as yet. There are some similarities with OG - will be interesting to see what everyone else comes up with on our watchalong.

BA is a tough act to follow, but this character is on par and made it Major. Winkhttp://jamescallis.tripod.com/photogallery/soldiers/photoss.htm Here]

Rhubarb01 · 09/01/2019 23:00

Evening all! Goodness me, are we all on the road to our next obsession? Looks like we might need to rename ourselves 'The Army Addicts'. I am only up to episode 6 of series 1, but I did watch a lot of of it some time ago, so it's not been quite so long for me since my last viewing.

ilove I've got the DVD too, so there are only momentary breaks during each play. I'm amazed at how long each part of the episode was - the first section is at least 20 minutes long before an advert break. There may be more breaks on the catch up versions.

Bonnefoi I saw James Callis in a play with Bob Hoskins called 'Old Wicked Songs' at The Bristol Old Vic donkeys years ago - he was pretty young then. I remember thinking it was going to be really tedious when I realised it was just the two of them, but it was a brilliant play and has stuck in my memory. These days I always think of him as Bridget Jones's gay friend, Tom.

We really will have to play 'Spot the actor' on the watchalongs. I'm just going to throw one in early for tomorrow which is Samantha Morton as a teenager!

Are we on for episode 1 tomorrow at 9pm?

Ilovelblue · 09/01/2019 23:01

Mmmmm, not bad at all!

OP posts:
Ilovelblue · 09/01/2019 23:22

Yes, I'll be raring to go tomorrow night. Spot the actor, comparisons with OG, general comments on the time/1990s, historic stuff (Ireland, merging of regiments) - plenty to talk about methinks.

OP posts:
Bonnefoi · 10/01/2019 17:29

Rhubarb Good grief, I’d not even realised he was the gay friend in Bridget Jones. Shock

I think is also saw that Green out of Robson and Green is in Game of Thrones. Looks nothing like his Soldier Soldier character.

Rhubarb01 · 10/01/2019 20:57

Here is position to play episode 1 of series 1 "All the King's Men"

Will commence at 9pm. If anyone is watching a streamed version or download which has adverts then please shout so we can pause any DVD's for a minute or so to more or less stay together.

Ilovelblue · 10/01/2019 20:58

Ready and waiting. Two mins to go.

And here we go....starting now!

Rhubarb01 · 10/01/2019 21:01

Friendly neighbours in Northern Ireland a tense situation.

Ilovelblue · 10/01/2019 21:01

We used to see news items like this every night when I was growing up.

I reckon Lt Pascoe is the nearest we're going to get to a 1990s version of CJ here.

OP posts:
Rhubarb01 · 10/01/2019 21:02

Prophetic words from Garvie - they won't go back until the problems are sorted out - this is 1991.

eejittwo · 10/01/2019 21:02

A tad behind - sodding adverts!
