Can you believe we are on thread 50! This is for all discussions on the BBC series Our Girl and any possible future series. Reference to Captain James is particularly welcome.

Should manage that okay.

Rhubarb01 · 10/01/2019 22:04

I'll be here next week for Episode 2. Enjoyed that.

eejit I think I read somewhere that the theme tune is based on an old English folk tune and has overtones of 'Soldier, Soldier will you marry me, with your musket, fife and drum...oh no sweet maid I cannot marry you 'cos I have no coat to put on..' etc. So it would be reminiscent of the folk songs from Sharpe - I've watched them all over time but not in a binge watch fashion. Love a bit of 'Sharp'.

Ilovelblue · 10/01/2019 22:06

You might pull a face at this, but I have been singing that song quite a lot since I started watching the series! I remember learning it as a small child.

Morning all. Well I read and enjoyed all your comments on episode 1 and of course identifying some of the actors. I think the main thing you get from this series in comparison to OG is a wider sense of the army. Larger numbers of course and although they do tend to concentrate on Paddy, Dave and Tony for focal points each episode gives a wider sense of different soldiers and how they interact.

TG was of course trying to tell a story from the point of view of a medic and because of that (especially in the GL episodes) concentrated too much on her with the result he had to have her practically running the outfit at the expense of all others, especially superior officers. Wouldn't have happened.

I like the way the chain of command is properly shown in Soldier Soldier. Laughable to think that in OG they had a Brigadier there telling them what to do. More likely would have been a Major or Lieut Colonel.

You can tell I'm enjoying this!😄

Ilovelblue · 11/01/2019 22:53

Perfectly put Magi.

I definitely get a better sense of army life from Soldier Soldier, even though it is around 30 years ago. I do understand what TG was trying to do and as we all know, the first season ticked all the boxes for us, but he really lost his way in Belize and Bangladesh. Considering all the main cast speak highly of the military advisors, it does make me wonder how much input they had in these more recent episodes because even as mere bystanders, we know that a corporal would never be the one to tell a captain what to do, nor would s/he be telling said captain to get the SF in. The same goes for having a high ranking officer, ie, a brigadier, being flown in to reprimand the CO.

Sad to say, but true, unless Lacey Turner is coming back and the storyline fixes CJ & Molly, I’m done with OG. I’m sticking with season one or fan fiction where they aren’t broken in the first place or the writers are working to fix them. I’m very, very stubborn that way. Wink

Indeed and looking forward to it. Bad person, I know, but was anyone else’s first thought, on hearing of the Al Shaanab attack in Kenya, of Elvis?

Ilovelblue · 17/01/2019 16:12

Sad to say eejit that although I didn't think of Elvis specifically, I did think of OG.

OP posts:
Rhubarb01 · 17/01/2019 16:37

Well, eejit they say truth is stranger than fiction, but it seems as if, tragically, truth has reflected fiction. I did think of OG2 with all those familiar references and the tale of the SF soldier sounds very much like Elvis.

I will be in position at 9pm

eejittwo · 17/01/2019 20:54

I’m in position and will press play in 6 minutes

Ilovelblue · 17/01/2019 20:56

Rhubarb01 · 17/01/2019 21:02

Remember Bones putting Two Section through their paces? Wasn't quite as arduous as this was it!

Rhubarb01 · 17/01/2019 21:03

Poor Colour Sergeant - must have spent too long on his Russian.

eejittwo · 17/01/2019 21:03

Sorry folks UKTV is being a pain. Will catch up soon.

Ilovelblue · 17/01/2019 21:04

Major Cadman has a funny chin. It's all I see when I look at him.

Mrs Cadman is ultra posh.
