A new adventure awaits us in the New World. It's going to be savage!

snozxlemaid, exactly. Brianna was supposed to have studied history and surely she would have done some research. Her dress and cape looked horribly inadequate for a Scottish winter! She neatly died of hypothermia before she'd even got very far. Having said that, I did enjoy the episode.

I suppose a nod to the frugality of the times are things like Brianna having a trunk of Claire's old clothes that would have been older than her, Claire having their clothes from Paris and keeping her boots. No fast fashion in the 1700s! The paper is a good example in the books, isn't there a funny conversation with Young Ian and Brianna about how wasteful it would be to use toilet paper.

quirkychick · 19/12/2018 11:44

*nearly, obviously

Lessstressedhemum · 19/12/2018 13:34

The toilet paper thing is an ongoing theme in the books! Ian can't believe it. I think the books show the frugality quite well and there's a lot of time spent dealing with the women spinning, sewing, making candles and the like. I suppose it's harder to do that on film but all the remaking and passing on of clothes is lovely and quite accurate.

Almost everything about Brianna annoys me and show Brianna is even worse than book one. She must have known it would be really cold but she didn't even have a shawl never mind a proper dress or Cape! And as for not getting a stick, this is the woman who tries to install running water and underfloor heating in her cabin. I mean, come on!

And only one peanut butter and jam sandwich to sustain her, and a stupid little knitted satchel. I take more provisions than that on a one hour train journey!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 19/12/2018 15:30

So Brianna was resourceful enough to take matches with her (good move) and Claire returned with Penicillin (which has had the unfortunate side effect of all wounds now going septic and requiring penicillin! While nothing festered in series one...)

Holidayshopping · 19/12/2018 16:23

That was the crappiest bag she could have taken, wasn’t it!?

I’d have had a sturdy leather bag with plenty of useful supplies in. It’s not like she didn’t have a bit of time to pack!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 19/12/2018 16:44

So as a diversion until the next episode, what 3 things from 20th /21st century would you take with you when heading for the 1770s?
I'm taking...
easy wash, quick drying thermal underwear
Waterproof fur lined boots
A Taser.

Holidayshopping · 19/12/2018 16:51

Hmmm, I would go for

Waterproof and warm boots/coat
Good set of medical supplies
Matches

sonjadog · 19/12/2018 17:20

A bicycle. Because then I would copywrite it and make my fortune.

A good picnic lunch, because I think time travel must make you hungry.

A dictionary. There would be a lot of words and phrases that have fallen out of use. To keep up the pretence, I’d need to look them up.

Lessstressedhemum · 19/12/2018 17:41

Good, sturdy, waterproof boots
A decent herbal
Thermal underwear.

I am assuming that I would be zapped back to C18th Ayrshire and the weather would be just the same as it is now.

What’s a herbal Lessstressed?

I’d take a toothbrush, toothpaste (can that count as one?), a biro and good boots.

Lessstressedhemum · 19/12/2018 21:24

A book with herbs, their medicinal uses and how to prepare them. Things like that. I'd want one with clear pictures and modern language to make it easy to use.

I like Frank too, BreakfastAtSquiffanys. He seemed to genuinely love Claire and only had the affairs because they were in a marriage of convenience by that point. I actually might be the only one to have a crush on him. I like the tweedy professor look. Xmas Blush

Brianna is an idiot. Her packing that sandwich reminded me of when I was 8 or so and ‘ran away’ from home. I tried to make a bindle with my toys in it and packed some snacks. I was probably bundled up better than Brianna!

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed she was attempting to walk to Ayr, why not go to Edinburgh? Craig na duhn is supposed to be just outside of Inverness. Even Google maps it, 2 days walk to Edinburgh, 3 days to Ayr.. makes no sense.

Glad I've found this thread. I really enjoyed this episode, but if you look on reddit there's a few like the Facebook people of whom you speak. I love the books for what they are, and the show for what it is. I think people forget the term ADAPTION. Would be nice to see more of Bree at Lallybroch but the location wasn't available and neither was Laura Donnelly who plays Jenny she was having a baby.

Could be she was trying to tie it in with sailing on a specific shop to a specific place and she knew one would leave from Ayr.

Or maybe she just fancied a fortnight at Butlins.

Lessstressedhemum · 20/12/2018 07:35

Oh, I hadn't thought about her wanting a wee jaunt to Craig TaraGrin

OP posts:
quirkychick · 20/12/2018 08:35

Pmsl at Breakfast wanting to take a taser, it would have done for BJR on quite a few occasions in S1 alone Grin.

Isn't the peanut butter sandwich originally what Claire takes to Edinburgh? I thought it was quite a nice way of bringing that in. But not enough food.

Definitely warm and waterproof clothes/footwear, medicine and a weapon of some sort.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 20/12/2018 10:50

I thought about taking a rape whistle but thought that a Taser would be more effective in repelling assailants

DryWhiteagainW · 20/12/2018 11:43

Antibiotics
Warm boots (that look like they were made in C18 or I’d get burnt as a witch)
Gold nuggets

Frank is boring

SenecaFalls · 20/12/2018 14:44

I don't worry about deviation from the books at all. I read the early ones so long ago that I can't remember a lot of the plotting anyway. So I just enjoy the adaptation on its own merit. It's a different art form; it shouldn't be expected to follow original source material to the letter.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 20/12/2018 14:54

I agree, I gave up with the books halfway through the ?third one (when there were endless chapters devoted to Jamie hiding in various caves and wearing that blessed dunbonnet), and the TV series has held my interest much better mainly because the scriptwriters have tightened things up and done the furious editing that the books sorely needed.

quirkychick · 20/12/2018 15:02

I enjoyed the books very much, I thought they were an exciting read. However, there are long-winded passages that could do with severe editing, some very dubious plot lines and some characters that sorely need rounding out. It is one thing to race through the books, trying to find out what happens next, but another to watch on screen. A lot of television writing these days is very tightly plotted, for the tv series to stand against other shows it needs to reflect that, somewhat.

cobblett36 · 21/12/2018 07:34

Course! She wanted a photo with that scary pink elephant there, then a wee trip to troon beach for sandcastles and tablet!

cobblett36 · 21/12/2018 07:35

How do I mention a user in a comment? Or reference their text? (Sorry still new to MN)

JessieMcJessie · 21/12/2018 07:50

It’s a bit tricky @cobblett36. Tobregerence someone make their name bold by putting and asterisk at either end of their name to make it bold. Put @ at the start of their name and they’ll get an email to say they’ve been tagged.
No proper quoting function, you have to copy the text and then bold it using asterisks.
