Also this is usually a friendly thread, shall we all try to keep it that way? Grin

StripySocksAndDocs · 10/10/2018 17:04

True it’s not important what other posters say.

But it is odd to think mocking a person’s face is ok, because you don’t know them and they are on tv. Then flounce because you don’t think it’s ok if a poster, who doesn’t know you, says that your public postings are nasty and devoid of empathy.

Anyway, back to baking.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/10/2018 17:14

@whatashower don’t you go anywhere, I enjoy your posts! I think we’ve all moved on since the first thread, sometimes at a pace it’s hard to keep up with. But it’s a happy and welcoming place now, which is what matters.

longtompotIt's basically meat chilli, so paprika, cumin, a bit of chilli powder and a veg stock cube with tomatoes, onions, garlic and red peppers. I boil dry black beans in the slow cooker with lots of water. I put them on before work and they were lovely and soft when I got home, drained and rinsed them and chucked it all in together. It is delicious. We had it with sweet potato wedges.

whatashower · 10/10/2018 17:56

😳 thanks, and no flouncing here. As all my posts are usually light-hearted and certainly not mean, I think I may have taken one for the team 🤣. Anyway, as I said, I wont post anything with the teeniest possibility of causing offence I guess I cant say anything about aquafaba now

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/10/2018 19:50

shower

Don't you DARE leave - we need your contributions.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 11/10/2018 12:38

Can anyone recall - has Rahul had any poor results this series? From memory his baking has been entirely consistent whereas I can't say the same for the others. Kim Joy is up there too although I recall a few mixed results in the early stages (could be wrong)
I don't necessarily count the technicals as they've been so niche this series. I don't think Rahul has even had a disaster (last place or thereabouts) in those which is unusual.

The final is going to be interesting if they're both in it plus Ruby or Briony (sorry Manon!). I don't especially want Rahul to win Grin

SneakyGremlins · 11/10/2018 12:48

I'm not sure but I'll happily rewatch every episode and skip to the judging part if you want. For science.

DarlingNikita · 11/10/2018 13:22

Gareth, this week he put too much coconut syrup (or something) in his showstopper, which is why it collapsed. I think the judges said it tasted too strong as well.

But that's about as bad as it gets, if I remember rightly.

whatashower · 11/10/2018 13:50

Gareth - I was pondering this too and thinking back. Rahul and Kim-Joy feel the most consistent with a number of triumphs and both SB twice for what that’s worth, Ruby has had more of a rollercoaster, obviously. Makes the next episode super exciting as a stellar performance by any of the contestants will be a game-changer. If we are lucky they will all be brilliant at Danish Week and cause the judges lots of problems 😀

FuzzyCustard · 11/10/2018 13:54

Please don't go Shower (And if anyone feels the need to say my baking is generally crap, please go ahead, it would be the truth!)

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 11/10/2018 14:03

Thanks Sneaky Grin

Looking forward to next week whatashower I thought they were joking with Danish Week at first Cake Grin but why not! More fool me for not looking beyond Danish pastries.

I still think they'll choose Kim-Joy (or even Briony as a wildcard? - her baking is getting better and better) over Rahul in the final, providing they all produce excellent bakes so there can be no claims of a fix.

Butterymuffin · 11/10/2018 14:13

The impression I got this week though was that Rahul's cake in the showstopper had also collapsed, but they'd only shown in happening to Ruby's. The flavour was also not great but Paul seemed to be minimising that in the judging comments. Am I right about the collapsing?

whatashower · 11/10/2018 14:20

Chaps, I really wasn't flouncing or threatening to leave 🤣 just promising not to post another caricature of you know who. Bad editing on my part, apologies. But thank you kindly for the reassurance, I luffs this thread and its witty contributors. ( In future I have resolved to express my observations on contestants through the medium of interpretive dance 🙄.) Enough. Onward and upward!

I have just seen that Vegan week was Noel's choice so all is forgiven. It was interesting and pretty much lentil-free give or take so they did well. Pastry is my Absolute Favourite so I am giddy as a kipper about next week. ❤️ Rahul and Kim-Joy were my tips for the top from Week 1 so Bryony will probably win 🤣

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 11/10/2018 14:21

DarlingNikita and Butterymuffin you're right! I don't understand why they didn't make a big drama about Rahul's collapsing a la Ruby's! It still looked pretty awesome but I suppose being a bit squashed and on two separate plates didn't fit the brief. I missed the taste assessment.

shellshock77 · 11/10/2018 14:36

Delurking to say I think Rahul's collapsed in the fridge so they couldn't show it?

3luckystars · 11/10/2018 14:53

I can't believe Ruby is still in the competition.

I wish they would have a 'Me Week' where they all bake the best things that they bake.
Then each person then writes down this recipe for the technical challenge.
Then they get randomly given to the other contestants, so each person tries to recreate another persons 'best recipe'.

This would be helpful in 3 ways:

  1. we would see their recipe writing skills
  2. we would see several completely different things in one episode
  3. it would make them hate the person who wrote it, and they would be giving dirty looks throughout the whole episode.

The showstopper then could be anything they wanted, just the best possible bake that they are capable of.

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2018 14:53

I'II have to rewatch vegan week, because I only bake vegan things now, I must have missed what they used for ingredients, I have never used aquafaba, I use soaked ,blended linseeds for an egg replacer, and almond or pnut butter for the butter (of course Grin) . Also maple syrup and or molasses for the sweetener, sugar would be more likely to make a cake collapse IMO. Mine never do!!

whatashower · 11/10/2018 14:57

That would make sense shell and my take was that the judges treated both the collapses like they usually do with any structures - what a shame you failed etc and then focused on the taste - it was just Ruby’s was the telly drama for viewers? Might need to watch and listen very carefully to it all again for nuance 😀 unless sneaky publishes her scientific paper first, of course 👍

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/10/2018 15:01

luckystars

That is an insipid idea!

(Almost as inspired as a "fFish Week" theme for strictly - those who are on both threads will know what I am talking about)

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2018 15:12

Yes a brilliant idea luckystars. Send it in or tweet it to them or whatever!

But not really on the level of Fish Week Grin Grin Schade

3luckystars · 11/10/2018 15:35

I will email them on now and see if they use it next year.

It would be better if the 'Me Week' technical was a complete surprise and they didn't know they would have to recreate the other contestants best cakes. There would be real tension.

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2018 15:45

3luckystars lets hope that their recipe writing skills are better than PH's.
Although I know he makes it difficult because he thinks that good bakers should have the basic skills.

3luckystars · 11/10/2018 15:48

Yes but the person would not know that their recipe would be for another person. They would be writing it, thinking it was for themselves. A trick!

iklboo · 11/10/2018 15:56

Oooh yes. Or a recipe out of the hat for someone else to do.
