I've no idea Graphista! It was a link that a friend posted on FB!

ChicagoLil · 10/10/2018 08:27

That's not in the spirit of this thread sadie

Mummyundecided · 10/10/2018 08:41

That’s a mean comment SadieLancaster. I think she’s aptly named as you can see the absolute joy she derives from baking her face.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/10/2018 08:57

Harsh responses to SadieLancaster. In the early threads there were lots of dubious comments about Kim Joy’s appearance, I felt quite uncomfortable about some of them. We all love her now but let’s not be hypocrites.

Mummyundecided · 10/10/2018 08:59

I’m not a hypocrite, thank you. I’ve not commented negatively on her - or anyone else’s appearance. If I’d seen those earlier comments I’d have responded in the same way.

SadieLancaster · 10/10/2018 09:01

I like her a lot! She’s really sweet!! It’s just she kind of reminds me of something and I can’t think what and it unnerves me.

Janice off The Muppets maybe??

A badabada?

Dunno.

jay55 · 10/10/2018 09:01

I liked Jon, he and Ruby keep the lightness and humour in the show, far more than the hosts.

I was hoping it would be Manon to go, inedible cake is the worst of sins to me Grin

SadieLancaster · 10/10/2018 09:04

Anyone else remember these?

DH and I have a little competition each year where after the very first signature bake we choose one baker each we think will win. The winner is whoever gets furthest in the competition and gets a cake made by the loser.

Last year we did pretty well, he picked Sophie and I picked Steven.

This year he has Manon and I have Bryony. I don't think either will win but can't call who will get furthest!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 10/10/2018 09:22

Anyone notice all the floral shirts in next weeks? Homage to Jon?
Eve DD and I noticed and thought so too!

Glad Ruby made it through to next round.
Briony has stepped up a gear, thought she was lucky to escape elimination earlier in the series.

ApolloandDaphne · 10/10/2018 09:35

I have grown to love Kim-Joy. I hope she wins and has her own really quirky TV show. We need more people like her in the world.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/10/2018 10:27

Kim Joy seems genuinely sweet, I really hope that’s her true personality because we need more people like her in the world. I’d like to think she wouldn’t be spoiled by celebrity.

Good result, but I fell asleep at the beginning Blush so I'll watch again, our old lady cat is yowling through the night so i get bleedin shattered by 9 pm. , we're an hour ahead. ( I liked Jon but he wasn't the most sophisticated baker).

Schaden Tofu is what you make it, I've had the most delicious cheesecake that I hadn't realised was vegan, it was tofu, it soaks up flavours beautifully!

For a stir fry you soak medium tofu in soya sauce, garlic, spices, onions etc. but NO oil because that stops it taking up the flavours. You can cook it in oil though!

bibliomania · 10/10/2018 11:29

Lemon, thank you for that link to The Pool. It's absolutely brilliant!

ThanksItHasPockets · 10/10/2018 11:36

The Pool is an online magazine which was set up by Lauren Laverne and Sam Baker, the former editor of Red. It has some really good content. Sali Hughes does a weekly column and the GBBO write-ups are very funny:

“Q: What’s the difference between vegan meringue and white masculinity?
A: They’re both fragile, but only one has to work hard to earn its place at the table.”

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/10/2018 12:13

Thank you everyone for the book recommendations. And thank you for the link to "The Pool" - I shall peruse that at my leisure!

I've always loved Kim-Joy from the beginning - but even I thought her make-up was a little . . . extreme . . .on occasions. I think that the production team must have encouraged her to go over the top, but she started to wear less. This week was a bit of a return to the "brights".

Riversleep · 10/10/2018 13:07

I have black beans in my slow cooker to make vegan black bean chilli. The fam prefer it to beef chilli.someone gave me some vegan recipes when my DS decided he wanted to be vegan. He decided against it eventually but we still have a much expanded repertoire. I always bake with coconut oil. It's really delicious but I get tons of it free. Otherwise its quite expensive.

longtompot · 10/10/2018 13:18

@Riversleep do you have the recipe for your black bean chilli?

Speaking of makeup being brighter, I noticed both Kim Joy and Mannon had both refreshed their hairdyes. Much pinker and purpler.

I made some vegan meringues with aquafab but word to the wise, do not have your oven even slightly too high. They go an attractive pale brown colour but taste acrid! I had to bin mine :(

ppeatfruit · 10/10/2018 13:19

That sounds nice Riversleep , I luurve black beans, I make a good dip with them as well as a curry. I'm not good with coconut so I cook with olive oil.

The thing is with GBBO is that it's really interesting this year because it could be anybody's Grin. I too guessed last years' winner on the first week.

StripySocksAndDocs · 10/10/2018 13:49

Earlier comments (on first thread) about Kim-Joy were equally low and nasty. There were plentiful posters who were void of decency and empathy. Posting cartoon pictures of creatures to show how weird looking she was and applauding each other on how hilarious it was. Those who objected weren't shown much tolerance (it being Kim-Joy's fault for being on TV or being different and the such like.)

It would be interesting to see if those same posters are now following the crowd and liking her now.

AngeloMysterioso · 10/10/2018 14:32

I’m still not a fan of KJ. Trying far too hard to be quirky. It’s not cute.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 10/10/2018 14:38

I’ve come to really like Kim-joy. It was a shame to see Jon go but no surprise. Other than Manon I really don’t mind who wins from who’s left. And I agree, it really could go anywhere.

whatashower · 10/10/2018 15:19

@ stripy Hi, as a poster of one of the said cartoons, it was done in good humour and I am genuinely sorry you have an issue with it.

I do not pretend to know Kim-Joy. She has remarkable make-up and it was being remarked upon. I also said on another occasion that she looked lovely. And I have applauded her baking. Absolutely no nastiness intended, for instance I would not accuse her of being devoid of decency and empathy, when I do not know her. Other commentators, I feel, posted in the same vein.

I look very like a horse and if I appeared on national television I would wholly expect that to be remarked upon, especially if I entered a reality competition where personality and appearance play a large part in the format. But I certainly shall not post again. That is all.

ppeatfruit · 10/10/2018 16:10

whatashower Don't worry about what some posters say, it's not important Grin you go on posting you're nice Grin
