Anyone looking forward to watching this tonight? 9pm on BBC1.
It's a co-production with Netflix, starring Toni Collette (Muriel's Wedding , The Sixth Sense).

Apparently it's the naughtiest drama to grace the BBC! They've said they are ready for a swarm of complaints..

I LOVE that the only good thing anyone can dredge up about this series is the kitchen design!

SeekingClosure · 13/09/2018 10:32

It's bonkers isn't it but I'll keep watching anyway because it's nice to look at.

I can't identify with the reactions of any of the characters; the couple don't seem to feel jealousy or ask a million questions about the other's lover, his colleague lover didn't seem to have enquiried at all about his wife, her lover hates cheating but only when it's not cheating as the other partner knows about it and he was ok with it before Hmm and as for the son asking to finger his best friend...wtf.

It was bizarre how the other daughter was just thrown in without any explanation.

Also I noticed this week that TC is doing an Emma Thompson impression every time she speaks!

SeekingClosure · 13/09/2018 10:34

Oh sorry I forgot to say that despite all that their kitchen is fucking on point 👌

thenightsky · 13/09/2018 10:38

I watched the first episode and thought it was absolute drivel. However, after reading this thread, I'm now watching episode two and fast forwarding purely to ogle the kitchen! Grin

The80sweregreat · 13/09/2018 13:43

badtasteflump yes, i think i am !!
i also love Muriel's wedding and seen her ( TC) in other things where she has been very good ( little miss sunshine , a film with Judi Dence)
but this drama is very odd.
i do think i need to go back and start again at episode one or just give up maybe!

The80sweregreat · 13/09/2018 18:31

Horsemad; yes the teacher does look like Meghan Markle! She is very attractive.

The other daughter appearing as she did was odd and the son looks too old even for sixth form.
I have watched it again and it's not as bad as I thought it was first time around.
I managed to avoid staring at the kitchen this time.

Horsemad · 13/09/2018 18:33

Is it bad that I didn't even notice the kitchen?! Blush

I will watch again later and check it out!

True story - I know Stephen MacKintosh's dad and he declared himself head over heels in love with me a couple of weeks ago. They look exactly alike. I am finding the sex scenes with Stephen quite creepy for this reason - btw, I am Stephen's age, his dad is 29 years older shudder

Other than that - I know people in open marriages, and people who are polyamorous, and some tell their spouses/other partners details, and some do not. The guy I currently see as a FWB is in an open marriage and they each know what they are doing, when, etc, but he says they don't share details and it doesn't feed their own sex life.

But, the show is supposed to be titillating fun I think, but is actually cringey. the last 1/4 of last night's was bizarre.

The80sweregreat · 14/09/2018 09:07

Having her accident has clearly changed her views on her marriage - I could see the pitfalls of an 'open' relationship or marriage, but I would bet that lots of people have one and it does work for them. As long as the people involved are being really sensible, its consensual and they use contraception etc etc then it may well put the spark back into lives!
I couldn't do it and would be devastated if i found out my dh was having an affair, but not everyone thinks that way - plus they have both found new people to have sex with at the same time here - you would have to be very lucky in real life for that to happen of course.

Some people have the theory that we are not meant to be with the same person for ever, we are all living longer too so i do think there is a lot more of this type of thing going on , but its not discussed and to be with someone who thinks the same must also be rare.
A man ( generally speaking) would see it as very much having his cake and eating it! Women would feel a lot more guilt ( but i am being very general with the language and only guessing this)

Almondio · 14/09/2018 09:36

It has a fantastic cast, some clever, funny writing and potentially watchable characters but the core theme of the story is just not working.

Toni Collette is magnificent in everything she does. But I think the cast deserves a better vehicle for their talents.

Johnb0y · 15/09/2018 00:00

I think it's good.
When she went into the church ... was that random and who was the lady she saw? Got confused about that.

MargotLovedTom1 · 15/09/2018 00:21

Yes, there's something going on there. She had a flashback of being atba youngish man's funeral and his wife (?) glaring at her, as well as a flashback of her bike accident, where she sees the same woman across the street, loses concentration and gets knocked off her bike. Was she their therapist? Did she have an affair with the man? I'm going to keep on watching, if only to have my theory confirmed there'll be a lesbian affair between the daughter and the middle aged aerobics dvd neighbour.

William Ash (Marvin) is just so bloody attractive, and Toni Collette always looks like she needs a good lip balm. Love the accent though.

Horsemad · 15/09/2018 08:40

I have always fancied William Ash Wink

nowifi · 15/09/2018 19:12

Yes Margot I thought the same about the daughter and the neighbour!

Deux · 15/09/2018 21:32

I’m not sure what to make of this. I find myself wondering if it is in fact a badly written comedy. Confused

VanGoghsDog · 18/09/2018 21:51

Fed up of this now, characters keep just appearing from nowhere and people all keep shagging each other, even the kids. It's pretty tedious, not much story really.

(I agree elder daughter going to have fling with neighbour)

FawnDrench · 18/09/2018 22:10

Why am I even watching this utter shite?
That's it after tonight, I'm done.

Complete garbage and totally unbelievable, what a shame and a scandalous waste of good actors.

lowtide · 18/09/2018 22:55

This show is a bunch of cunts
It’s AWFUL

The80sweregreat · 19/09/2018 06:20

It is tedious now.

SoupDragon · 19/09/2018 07:46

I started watching last nights episode only because I couldn’t be arsed to find another channel to watch. I paused it about half way through as DD came downstairs and never bothered unpausing it.

The80sweregreat · 19/09/2018 09:18

What the teacher sees in the older guy i dont know! he isnt bad looking i suppose, but she is so young and pretty and could have anyone and she is after him? Its so not gripping me i cant even recall names of the characters that are all shagging around!

troodiedoo · 19/09/2018 09:22

I've given up but was flicking last night and caught five mins. I see the husband is still a twat.

VanGoghsDog · 19/09/2018 09:29

I've given up but was flicking last night

Shock

Given the theme of the show..........it's very modern of you to admit this!

Susiesoap7 · 19/09/2018 10:19

Love William ash
Couldn't sleep with the husband ugh
Agree lesbian affair
