I really don't like how it used a Muslim girl with hijab as the bomber. Such lazy and unfair depiction, playing into the image the far right want to portray. It's dangerous and irresponsible for the producers to use.

Clawdy · 26/08/2018 22:18

That opening twenty minutes was unbearably tense, I haven't seen anything so gripping and frightening for a long time. Not sure how it will stretch to six episodes though.

Dulra · 26/08/2018 22:21

Loved it first 25 min flew by very tense. No idea how things will go dh thinks dave and home sec will s**g I think he'll top her so those two polar opposite ideas on how things will go illustrates the great writing. Big LoD fan and very pleased with this so far Grin

Caspiana · 26/08/2018 22:22

I loved it and can’t wait for tomorrow’s episode!

TheHandmaidsTail · 26/08/2018 22:25

Loved it! Who's the man in the big play car? Chanel didn't look happy to see him.

TheHandmaidsTail · 26/08/2018 22:25

Black car. A play car wouldn't have been as dramatic.

EmilyDickinson · 26/08/2018 22:30

I suppose it's possible that Dave/David/I answer to both told Nadia that he didn't trust the people in charge to try and build a bond with her and that he visited the veteran who said he'd put a bullet through a cabinet minister's head to try and flush out a possibile plot against the person he's been assigned to protect?

(Clinging to hope that Dave/David/I answer to both is a good guy.)

reallybadidea · 26/08/2018 22:34

I loved how there were loads of strong female characters: the expo, the police officer in charge, the armed officer, the home secretary.

And Jed Mercurio is an expert at building tension. Fantastic first episode IMO.

DolorestheNewt · 26/08/2018 22:35

a play car wouldn't have been as dramatic.

Yellow with big red wheels. No, not sinister.

WhatILoved · 26/08/2018 22:38

Loving this

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 26/08/2018 22:44

Enjoyed it although David/Dave's constant eye narrowing to show how hard he was scanning the surroundings for danger got a bit tedious.

ZeroFuchsiasGiven · 26/08/2018 22:50

Enjoyed it a lot. Great to see the King in the North with his real accent! Staved off my withdrawal symptoms till we finally get the last series of GoT next year.

(Apparently when they were rehearsing the first series of GoT, Richard Madden and Kit Harington were expecting to do fairly posh standard English accents, like Bron, Sansa and Arya, which would have been harder work for RM than for KH. However, Sean Bean just announced that he would be doing his normal accent so his sons had to fall in line with that, which meant a lot of accent work for both of them. Grin)

weepat · 26/08/2018 22:59

I've taped it after watching first half hour. BBC gone a bit overboard with the "top women" though.
Woman investigator on train
Woman sniper
Woman head of arms team
Woman section head
Women home secretary.
I'm all for equality but that was a bit extreme.!
Not impossible before anyone starts shouting but a bit over the top .

CoolCarrie · 26/08/2018 23:01

And breathe, that was tense.
Eye candy alert on Richard

wowfudge · 26/08/2018 23:02

Enjoyed it despite DP telling me in great detail how he could tell the train was an old one Hmm. I thought the stuff with Nadia was very clichéd though and I'm wondering if he's a terrorist/terrorist sympathiser and the bomb on the train was a set up to enhance his credentials. Being familiar with Mr Mercurio's work, I may be overthinking things - he likes to keep you guessing.

Bouledeneige · 26/08/2018 23:03

Quite liked it - the scene in the train was really grabbing and he is pleasing on the eye. Not much of a fan of Keeley Hawes - she speaks so oddly - either sort of whispery or shouty.

His confidence and command in the first scene on the train was well contrasted by his story with his wife, and his PTSD.

I didn't really understand the final scenes but I shall look to be illuminated as the action unfolds. I'm pretty sure it's not a linear narrative.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/08/2018 23:06

Hadn't realised it was a Jed Mercurio series. That probably explains why I like it. Though nothing will ever compare to his Cardiac Arrest. I know people who can't watch that, because it triggers flashbacks.

raisedbyguineapigs · 26/08/2018 23:14

I really enjoyed it. I too find Richard Madden a bit wooden at times but he was perfect for this. His eye candiness has disappeared with his beard and big fur coat for me tho Grin Love Keely Hawes. I'm wondering whether the twist will be some kind of threat from the sacked intern rather than the Islamist terrorist though. Looking forward to the rest of it.

HelloMist · 26/08/2018 23:21

Another Line of Duty and Mercurio fan here. I only recently finished series 4 so looking forward to the next one and was excited to try this while I wait.

Annoyingly, DH sat down beside me and half watched it only after the gripping first 25 minutes were over. Haven't been able to tempt him into trying LoD properly either.

David's estranged wife looked familiar from somewhere and I see now she's in Peaky Blinders.

It will be good to see all the ideas here as it progresses. Smile

partystress · 26/08/2018 23:25

Liked it a lot. Struggled with the sweet, downtrodden guy from Motherland playing a high power political aide, but thought it trotted along nicely. Wondering whether Budd was in on it with train bomb couple - all three playing a longer game?

tigercub50 · 26/08/2018 23:52

Phew the train scenes were so tense! I hate the way it’s always portrayed as someone just getting through to the “ baddie” when the armed police charge in, waving massive weapons & shouting & promptly fanning the flames again! I really thought they would shoot.
Not sure who mentioned domestic abuse - guessing if there was abuse with his wife, it was connected to the PTSD.

LaLaLamp · 26/08/2018 23:57

Was gripped from the start.

Why did he not check under the bed/in the wardrobe at the SS abode?

That train looked far posher than anything I've been on to Euston! Grin

beanaseireann · 27/08/2018 00:05

It was very good. The opening scenes were so tense.

BonnieF · 27/08/2018 00:09

I’m sad enough to have spotted that, too. It did stick out like a sore thumb. Presumably they didn’t have the budget to charter a modern train set for filming. The carriage design was very dodgy. Far too wide for Standard Gauge!

nocoolnamesleft · 27/08/2018 01:32

To be fair, most of the population of the SE seem to genuinely believe that the current rolling stock really is that old...
